Samuel Ramey - Scene of the Hermit: "E ancor silenzio!"/ Verdi, "I lombardi..."/ English subs / 1993
"I Lombardi alla prima crociata" is one of Verdi's early operas: he wrote it at the age of 29. In this Met's 1993 production the fabulous Samuel Ramey sings Pagano, the main antagonist, turned hermit to repent the sin of killing his father.
Ramey's incredible performance showing the two diametrically opposed sides of the same characted was praised by the critics. Here is, for example, what the prominent British music critic and writer Paul Griffiths wrote in his 2005 book "The Substance of Things Heard: Writings about Music" about Ramey in this production
"Samuel Ramey as Pagano, was more consistent [than Pavarotti] in his singing, and in his vivid presence: he alone onstage conveyed the impression he thought he was in something that mattered. And he did so despite the fact that the piece required him to present not one character but two, with no opportunity for developing one out of the other. In the first act, Pagano is naked villain: Ramey aptly and ably used that bark, particularly on long 'a' sounds, which he can produce without damage to his melody. (Part of what makes his singing special is his strange ability to enunciate and colour the words with the strength of speech while letting forth a sway of pure music: you seem to hear the words and the musical line separately, but at the same time.) In the three acts following, where the move to the Holy Land finds the wicked brother become a somber eremite, Ramey softened in tone, but not in power. Even when prayerful and subdued, he was in command. The honours belonged to him, to Pavarotti in his first aria, and to James Levine and the orchestra."
I added English subtitles. Below 👇 is also the link to Pagano's Act I aria. Watch, listen, and enjoy!

In this production of Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" (La Scala, conductor Riccardo Chailly) Samuel Ramey plays the four incarnations of evil-Lindorf, Coppélius, Dr. Miracle, and Dapertutto. This opéra fantastique is full of whimsical, eerie, and romantic moments, mixing tragedy with dark humor. Sadly, Offenbach passed away before completing the opera, so his friend Ernest Guiraud finished ...

The art of slander has never sounded so delightfully sinister! Samuel Ramey is absolutely unforgettable as the scheming yet ridiculous Don Basilio in this fragment from the New York City Opera’s November 1976 production. Not only is his voice incredible, but he also has impeccable comedic timing! A little context for those watching this aria for the first time (and I envy their upcoming discove...

This is a delightful duet from Massenet’s "Cherubin," in which Cherubino - now 17 - is still hopelessly smitten with an insatiable desire for women, much like his earlier incarnation in "Le nozze di Figaro." His moral tutor, the Philosopher, apparently has his hands full, considering Cherubino’s youthful recklessness! 😄 Massenet, already 59 years old at the time, immersed himself in the creatio...

    E ancor silenzio!

    I find it a real pity that the bass range is almost entirely absent from musicals. If it had been an opera, a role like the Phantom would likely have been a bass. And Ramey perfectly illustrates why - a deeper voice just brings an entirely different aspect to the character and makes it somehow sound both more menacing and more heartfelt. Or, you know, perhaps it's just that Ramey is an amazing performer who can capture a million emotions with just his voice!

    La calunnia è un venticello Un’auretta assai gentile Che insensibile, sottile, Leggermente, dolcemente, Incomincia a sussurar. Piano, piano, terra, terra, Sottovoce, sibilando, Va scorrendo, va ronzando. Nell’orecchie della gente, S’introduce destramente E le teste ed i cervelli Fa stordire e fa gonfiar. Dalla bocca fuori uscendo Lo schiamazzo va crescendo, Prende forza poco a poco, Vola già di loco in loco, Sembra il tuono, la tempesta Che nel sen della foresta Va fischiando, brontolando, E ti fa d’orror gelar. Alla fin trabocca e scoppia, Si propaga, si raddoppia, E produce un’esplosione Come un colpo di cannone, Un tremoto, un temporale, Che fa l’aria rimbombar. E il meschino calunniato, Avvilito, calpestato, Sotto il pubblico flagello, Per gran sorte va a crepar.

    Sometimes you need to listen to the audio version of an opera before seeing the video version, and this production is a case in point. I first saw this production on video and just couldn't deal with the visuals. I pride myself on being a sophisticated operagoer who is all about the voice and not the way the singers look, and was disappointed in myself when I just couldn't believe Ramey as Filippo II. Filippo is an older man who, in this scene, is lamenting the fact that his young wife doesn't love him. He sings about how she saw his gray hair on the day she met him and was repulsed. Filippo is supposed to be old and unattractive, full of self doubts, but the production designer (Franco Zefferelli, who loves gorgeous productions), makeup people, and costumers all had seemingly conspired to make Samuel Ramey, who is gorgeous to begin with, just as stunning as possible. He wears beautiful costumes, his magnificent mane of hair is perfectly coiffed (with the small bit of that gray that turned off Elisabetta all combed out by the time this Third Act scene occurs), and he looks about perfect. I imagine it worked better when seen from the audience at La Scala, but on video (and later DVD) with closeups and all, he just looked ridiculous, not at all like the unattractive old man Filippo is supposed to be. When he sings about how old and ugly he is, I'm afraid I couldn't suppress a giggle. To make matters worse, young Don Carlo, Elisabetta's true love, is Luciano Pavarotti, complete with a giant wig that looked like it had been dyed with bootblack and eyebrows that appeared to have been painted on with a Sharpie pen. The visuals were indeed disturbing in this video version and I just couldn't take the production seriously. I really tried, but I just couldn't. As I mentioned earlier, I these problems probably disappeared when viewed from the audience at La Scala. Some time later, I came across the audio version (on CD) of this opera and decided to listen to it. Without the visuals, I was quite surprised to discover just how wonderful a vocal actor Samuel Ramey is in this role. His interpretation of Filippo was marvelous, a perfect portrait of the strong monarch who internally doubts himself because his young wife has turned away from him. He was as good and in most cases superior to anyone else I have heard in this role. He even rivals Ferruccio Furlanetto, who I think of as one of the very finest actors ever in opera. I have heard more than one critic claim that Ramey isn't a good actor. Too often they judge that book by its cover and not only proclaim him to be a not very good actor but also an inferior singer. Well you know, don't you, that nobody who looks like that could possibly be one of the greatest basses who ever lived and a fine actor? I would beg to differ as to his voice and his acting ability.

    • @TheAmazingSamuelRamey
      @TheAmazingSamuelRamey 8 днів тому

      Thank you for your beautiful detailed comment! I agree with you, it's just I quit looking for believable characters in opera long ago. Don't get me wrong here, but more often than not, for me basses are much more handsome than tenors. Not to mention, I am not a fan of high voices. And in the case of the gorgeous Samuel Ramey, well, I have no comment ;) So while totally accepting your point of view, I can't help but be thankful to Zefirelli, for not using makeup or prosthetics to make Ramey's face old and ugly - we have this magnificently looking Philip II, and Elisabetta can make way for those who look at his white hair without tears in their eyes :) On a more serious note, I do think Samuel Ramey is as finest an actor, as he is a singer, and I agree that somtimes he is judged in an extremely unfair way. But oh well, as Bismarck once said, "only kittens are loved by everyone," and we have a LION with a magnificent roar and mane, now don't we 🦁❣️✨

Je voulais vousdemander si, à part Le mariage de Figaro et le barbier de Séville, il y aurait un opéra avec M. Samuel Ramey qui serait un peu plus "léger", c'est à dire où il ne se fait pas assassiner ?

      @@sunlights3048 Sorry, I will reply in English, as my French is very limited - I understand it well, but it's difficult for me to write :( I actually did reply to your question earlier, under the "Vieni, o cara vid." The matter is, the bass voice in opera is almost always an antagonist, a negative character. Even if it's not, it's an older, senior person--and almost always either reflecting, contemplating, scheming, grieving, praying, or something like that. Of Samuel Ramey's lighter roles I would name Rossini's comic operas - "L'Italiana in Algeri" and "Il Turco in Italia." but there are only audio recordings preserved. There is, of course, Don Giovanni, but generally speaking he is not quite a good guy either and he dies at the end, too :) He also sang Leporello, but only the recording of his "Catalogue aria" is preserved, alas. So, I'm afraid, there isn't much good news in that department for us, Ramey admirers 😥

His voice to be appreciatrd has to be in dramatic roles. My English is may be no too good. If you dont understnd what I write, Il will try in French and you cans translate after. Ella giammai m' amò! No, quel cor chiuso è a me, amor per me non ha! Io la rivedo ancor contemplar triste in volto il mio crin bianco il dì che qui di Francia venne. No, amor per me non ha. Amor per me non ha! Ove son? Quei doppier presso a finir! L' aurora imbianca il mio veron! Già spunta il dì! Passar veggo i miei giorni lenti!

    I've said it before and I'll say it again, nothing tops this production for me. And Ramey is magnificent here - he's said that he always found the serenade one of the hardest parts of Don Giovanni to perform because it lies at the top of his voice, but you really can't tell. He sounds incredible!

    • @TheAmazingSamuelRamey
      @TheAmazingSamuelRamey 12 днів тому

      I know! He also mentioned that other singers are usually nervous about performing the Champagne aria, but for him it's easy, while Serenade is indeed a bit high for his voice, and he was anxious about that moment during every performance. But hadn't I heard that, I would never tell, his singing is amazing, as always. And yes, this production is my favorite, too, for many reasons ❣

    Today, on 27 January, in 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a greatest musical genius, was born. To celebrate, I have made a playlist "Samuel Ramey Sings Mozart." which you can listen to right here: shorturl.at/GaRbR. Enjoy!

    @sunlights3048 I am happy when you post e new songs by M. Samuel Ramey. On top of that you insert the subs titles. MERCI. Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, the previous video of Serenade from another production of "Don Giovanni", on which you commented, was removed for copyright claims, so I can't reply there. Thanks for your kind words, I'm glad you enjoy the channel! 💗❤

      You are very welcome, I'm glad you are enjoying the channel. Indeed, Les Huguenots appear to be among Meyerbeer's most successful operas, if not the most successful. Back in 1985, when Opera National de Paris was considering which operas written for the French audience to stage with Samuel Ramey, they eventually chose Robert le Diable, but Les Huguenots was also under consideration. I wish they could have somehow found the way to stage both. But, alas...
