    Great choice for your first western! Great moments of just "feeling" L'Amour's western settings. He always wrote about actual places he had been and knew well, so they read as very real. And yes! I also much prefer the full=bleed cover illustrations! Very enjoyable presentation.

    Just came across your channel while looking for other BookTrekkers. Like Brandy, I haven't read this one either. I agree with your view that the crew of the Enterprise are explorers first and foremost. Too often overlooked in more recent Star Trek. Interesting that it covers how the Romulans handle their own explorations. I enjoyed your presentation.

      "Too often overlooked in more recent Star Trek." I agree 100% - I'm dying for a new film or series that takes inspiration from TMP and 2001: A Space Odyssey! (I have not yet seen Strange New Worlds, so here's hoping that it will scratch that itch!)

    I remember reading this book when it came out at the start of my senior year of high school. There was a long wait between season 1 and 2 of TNG due to the writer's strike that summer. I was a member of the Star Trek fan club and they interviewed Carey when the book came out. She said that she was kinda forced to write the characters that way because they were still filming Farpoint and she only had that script and a few others, plus the shows "bible", to go on. Picard was impatient, Riker didn't like Data, Geordi didn't like Riker because of how he treated Data, Worf and Yar were hotheads, Troi was just irrational, etc. Great review, sir!! You just earned a new subscriber. 🤓

    Hi Joe. I'm so glad you've joined us for a bit of Rocket Summer. I really enjoyed your discussion of Frankenstein. It's a novel I used to love to teach to high school seniors. I enjoyed your comparisons to the notions we have of Frankenstein from popular culture which are very different from Mary Shelley's original conception. Yes, the monster is very intelligent. He reads Milton's Paradise Lost! Mary Shelley had a lot of issues surrounding the issue of motherhood and abandonment: her own mother had died shortly after her birth, leaving her feeling both abandoned and also guilty for "killing" her mother, and she herself had lost several children. The novel is actually dealing, indirectly, with those issues much more than the popular movies would ever lead us to believe. It's just a fascinating novel, I think. Great discussion!

    • @josephhix1034
      @josephhix1034 5 місяців тому

      The introduction in the edition that I read mentioned her mother. There's certainly a lot there to dissect! I imagine that this would be an excellent novel to go over in a school or group setting. I must admit that I am glad I read it for the first time as an adult - I feel like I could appreciate it much more at my age now.

    "He flat out has emotions in this." Well, yeah. Data had emotions in the first couple of seasons. They were simple and subtle. His quest was to become more human, not to gain emotions. He wasn't a computer in a humanoid suit; he was an artificial life form. Later seasons turned him into a computer in a humanoid suit, and part of this was to claim he had no emotions. I much prefer the early concept of Data over what he eventually became.

    Nice shirt! ❤ Yah that book was not great lol. There were things I liked though. For example it explains why Troi is a bridge officer, and there's a pretty detailed description about how Geordi's visor works. But yes. Definitely not canon lol. I went into the novels already knowing they weren't accurate, so I have never had trouble with even the wildly inaccurate ones. I just consider them a bit of fun with the characters and world I know and love. However the later TNG novels are pretty accurate. You will probably like those better. And yes the motion picture novelization was really good! I'm voting you read that one next! ❤

    I like your intentions, and am anxious to see what book or film you do next. My comment concerns the Rick Atkinson volume about the first two years of the Revolution. It was a hard read for due to the author’s literary style. So I hope you enjoy it.

      I'm excited to read it at some point! I may jump into a WWII book before I get to Rick Atkinson's Revolutionary War book (I also have his liberation trilogy). I will have another history book finished soon - working on Our Beloved Kin by Lisa Brooks about King Philip's War.

    Welcome to BookTube! Love that you enjoy both books and movies. I have actually never read a Roald Dahl book! I've seen several movies, but I don't think I've ever read the original books. Maybe I read the BFG actually?? That's ringing a very faint bell.

      Thank you! BFG is actually one that I never read. Matilda and the Witches were also ones I remember reading that I don't think I mentioned.
