Using my own experiences as a Montgomery scholar and an author, I return to the journals after a break of six years during which the world has changed drastically. I also examine my own change from an academic to a fiction writer. Copyright: Vappu Kannas, 2023. This work is licensed under a Creative Common...

Jessica Brown Presents: "Eyes for Avonlea: Montgomery's Affective Vision of Nature"

Birch skin, shadowed wood, patches of dappled light, endless varieties of dusk and dawn, prismatic colours of the sea: surpassing mere descriptive prose, Montgomery’s rendering of nature thoroughly registers how nature impresses upon and affects the assemblages surrounding it. In order to present Montgomery’s configuration of nature as an affective strata, I will look at several passages from A...

Thank you for your beautiful tour. I had just listened to a well done audio book of Anne Of Green Gables. I had only seen the movies and listened to the audio drama. Then I watched a documentary on L.M. Montgomery and thought how sweet it would be to tour PEI. Then your tour magically appeared in gue on UA-cam. Thank you so much!
What a beautiful video!! I will have to watch this at least another half dozen times to satisfy my longing to see PEI for myself. The narration was excellent, helping me to piece together a lot of disjointed bits of information I had previously been confused by. Thank you!!
This was wonderfully nostalgic for me, having recently returned from Maritime Canada, including PEI. The visit to PEI was a life's dream fulfilled. Everyone for whom Anne of Green Gables has been an important book just has to go and be immersed in the beauty and atmosphere. Like another viewer, I now need to go again, but, if you go, you'll have to close your eyes when you encounter the tat which Bernadeta warns about in the video
Sad that few Canadians give the honour to the writings of LM Montgomery beyond Anne of Green Gables. I read her books and journals to inspire and charm.
this is beautiful and perfectly captures the essence of Maud's writing! "your soul for a bowl and your mind for a spoon," wow!! the word "ease" drawing from Anne's need for the letter E. "round the bend." so many beautifully woven refferences!
How pleased Maud must be from Heaven.
Wonderful tour for us who admire and cherish LM Montgomery. Thank you!
So cool my family from Toronto. During books review we think alaska is ok. Traslations of books. Some people realize i a maud descendants can speak english, an Chinese. 😅 lucy maud Montgomery an even lucy liu are families 👪 of mine. 🇺🇸
My Lucy maud Montgomery. My aunt Lucy Bragg is named after Lucy maud Montgomery! 😊
What a stunningly beautiful place! I’m too old and infirm now to travel, if not not for that, I would definitely go and visit. I read the books when I was eleven years old and am about to pass them on to my granddaughter Emily who is also eleven. I hope they will send her to the magical places in my mind where I once happily wandered.
thankyou 😊 beautifully done would love to visit one day 😊
A few years ago, I read her other novels beyond the Anne series, they were good as well, hopefully with permission of the family they will be made into movies as well.
What a wonderful exposition of Anne's 'talkiness' and the true power of words! Thank you for this fascinating talk!
Alaska?
I really enjoyed this tour. Thank you.
I live on PEI and am heartsick of the damage that hurricane Fiona wrought. We drove along the north shore and through Cavendish, Rustico etc last fall. I look forward to spring to go venturing again and see what is left of these beautiful spots. Lovely video, they have moved the School Lucy Maude taught at into the town of Bedeque, it is across the street from the original Callbecks store, which is now a museum. It's only minutes from Kensington and Summerside. I hope you all have an opportunity to visit our home. I lived in Alberta for a decade and once I came back I feel so fortunate to live on our beautiful Island.
We are visiting in early June. Im so excited!
Oh how terrible the wreck left behind after hurricane's and Tornadoes, we've had two in the last few weeks, we have only ever had one, 12 years ago, in the 40yrs I've lived in Bunbury Western Australia, so I can imagine the heart-wrenching damage. Reading LM Montgomery's books makes me homesick for her life on PEI. I do hope that one day I can come and spend a couple of weeks, roaming the island. I wish it wasn't so far away. You are indeed fortunate to live in such a beautiful spot with such a rich history of this famous author.
Wow Amaizing and very informative video
Beautiful, thank you!
I’m overwhelmed. Am currently on PEI and only mildly interested in LM Montgomery and Anne of Green Gables. If you were to tour one of these places which would you do and why?
You should at least see Green Gables Heritage Place. Once you are there you could take an extra hour to visit LMM's Cavendish Homestead, the park with her statue and the shoreline. Avonlea was inspired by Cavendish, so you will be able to see the real places that inspired L.M. Montgomery
Thank you fantastic story of wonderful author .I hope want to listen her journal itself near future!
Interesting!
Loved this video so much, thank you!!
I am very happy that you enjoyed it!
Just beautiful, a place I long to visit one day ❤❤❤
This was absolutely delightful. I cannot adequately express what LM Montgomery and her books mean to me. It has been a nearly lifelong dream to visit p e i.
Me too. #1 on my bucket list.
Been a fan since I was a teen in the 80's. I would love to visit as well.
I'd really love to know how a guy like Gilbert Blythe would have come into her life as he was made out to be a surgeon and she married a minister just sounds like he was made up for the books but really would liked to have known if he was real. Same with Diana Barry was she a real friend or just made up for the books. I would have hated to have grown up like she did parentless even though her father was still alive but she never really knew that. It sorta makes me feel that I too love to read and write after becoming extremely ill with Epilepsy at 12 I never knew the life of a teenaged girl maybe I could do something similar while I'm young. 📚
Gilbert, Anne and the rest are all made-up characters. I see why you would get confused - after all there is Avonlea village to see, Green Gables etc and the narrator was talking about Anne and Mathew and Marilla as if they really lived there which they didn't. No idea what the Green Gable house shown in this video is. She was describing that it was enlarged little by little over the years, starting in 1831 etc etc I don't know if that was a house used for the movie or L.M. lived there at some point. Just confusing. L.M. knew her father was alive, but he lived far away with a new, young wife. L.M. went to visit him once but the new ife treated her like a free servant and nanny so L.M. went back to live with her grandparents. She was financially successful with her wonderful books, but privately she struggled in her marriage, she was extremely busy as a mother and wife to a minister, and a prolific writer, and her husband was often very depressed and mentally not well. She regretted marrying him soon after the ceremony. She gave birth to three boys (not at once, 3 separate pregnancies), one of them a stillborn child, she was so heartbroken and depressed after that. She didn't have an easy life.
So enjoyed this video as I admire the life of LM Montgomery; re-creating her journals.
Hello from Brazil.
Great episode. Hello from Brazil.
the maudcast?a I love this so much!! I can't find it on apple podcasts!! is it not there? I hope it will be soon!! this channel just keeps getting better!!
Hello! Currently the MaudCast is available on Spotify and Podbean (themaudcast.podbean.com). The team is working to get the MaudCast on Apple in the future!
oh, wow! it thrills me to know the original manuscript is published! I appreciated you reading the original and then the changed text in this video. I agree about the current wine. the sceen was flushed out to give the wine time to have its affect on poor Diana! wonderful video!!
I am so glad I found this channel today!! I’ve been enraptured by Anne since I was a kid and am rereading the series again at present. so fascinated to learn more about who L.M. was as a person! I would love to get ahold of the journals! are they available in an electronic format anywhere? I’m visually impaired so the print copies you can probably buy at Chapters wouldn't do much for me. but how I would love to read L.M’s journals she wrote about her life. one of the happiest days of my life was when I went on a family vacation with my parents in 1997 and we went to PEI and visited the Green Gables house and upon seeing I’m blind, they let me touch everything and go inside the glassed off rooms. oh my goodness the best memories of that day!! I will come back and go on this full tour, I will!!! anyway. just so glad I found this today and if you know where I might find the journals in electronic format, I’d be so grateful if you could let me know!! this is so wonderful!! and you will see me on the tour as soon as covid gets gone!! I’ve gotta do it!!
oh my goodness I want to go on this tour and stay in the inn!! my heart belongs to PEI!! it is my dream to call this beautiful place home one day. I went with my family in 1997 and they planned a whole Anne themed day for me and it was one of the happiest days of my life and I have longed to return ever since. and this tour looks beyond amazing!!! so much scope for the imagination here!!!
Awesome video Carolyn.... what is the pleasant music we hear throughout?
Hi Harold, the composer of this instrumental is Aakash Gandhi. I believe the song is "Humdard".
Exquisite presentation...
Amazing work Carolyn!
Bucket List.
For anyone who is interested, there is going to be a free Zoom meeting about Rilla of Ingleside on Saturday November 21st at 2 PM EST. To sign up, go to LM Montgomery Online.
Thank you so much for making this video. I went to PEI back in 2018 and I loved it so much. I learned a few things while watching your video. Like for example, I didn't know that Maud's cousin Frederica was buried on PEI. I was also glad to see that the Montgomery homestead was turned into an inn. Thank you again for this video. As soon as it's safe to travel again and the virus is gone I will go back to PEI.
You are very welcome. We are happy to hear that you found this video interesting and we hope you will return to PEI soon.
Beautiful and informative video tour. I really enjoyed it.
I am very happy you enjoyed the video :)

Dìreach tlachd a th' ann, a bhith 'g èisteachd 's a' coimhead. Cha mhòr cho math ri bhith an lathair! Cho toilichte gun do chruthaich Emily an cothrom seo a dh'aindeoin gu leòr de bhacaidhean is dhùbhlain. :-)
Tapadh leibh! Thug an L.M. Montgomery Institute taic mhòr do'n tachartas seo agus b'e tlachd mhòr a bhith an sàs riutha, ged nach b'urrainn dhuinn a bhith a' cruinneachadh ann an Baile Teàrlaig mar bu chòir a bhith!
Thanks for posting about this, Angus MacLeod!
