That’s fair and to an extent I agree it’s rather simple! At the end of the day I believe in letting tunes be what they are and not forcing things into a box so much. So even though this isn’t my most intricate or complex work, I still like how it turned out.

Glad you dig it! This one was made entirely in Ableton - drawing in the beat and then playing the other parts live via MIDI. I tend to swing back and forth between only using the Tracker for a long time, then getting back into exclusively using the DAW, and so on. For me, periodically jumping workflows is essential to keeping ideas fresh. Always a treat to get your feedback, my friend!

@@jhooks That's awesome, thanks for replying. That makes sense, shifting workflows to keep things fresh, and definitely the extra level of detail and control you can achieve with the DAW can make a big difference. I used to think I stuck to the same, singular, workflow nearly all of the time because it was important to keep things possible for the potential of a live, non-laptop based, performance. However, on reflection I think the real reason I do it is just the autism! :)

Most of the stuff I make with PT has been too chaotic on its face to be easily compatible with Performance mode, at least until I learn it better, and with this one I actually set out to engage in a somewhat conventional production for the express purpose of getting more familiar with those punch-in fx; means a lot that you’d notice and point that out!

Precisely the vibe I was going for! Having only been 4 y/o at the outset of the new millennium, I’m sometimes concerned about these kinds of tracks coming across derivative or overly nostalgic, since history lessons and only the very faintest memories are just about all I have to grasp on to from that period. It’s nice to know this one accurately evokes the era :)

Will do! Thanks for checking it out. Kind of a blend of the two. For real all over the place parts, I’ll start by filling in some random instruments and FX, usually all locked to the same note. Then it’s a matter of more deliberately refining what plays where, and then playing with pitches until it sounds interesting. Both the random and fill features are great to generate a jumping off point for ideas!

much appreciated as always, Joel! I looked into the two channels you mentioned - really means a lot that you’d put me in with such talented folks. I especially enjoyed the varied visual content across the 5 or so videos I saw. Oftentimes for me, creating something that’s pleasing to watch as well as listen to is one of the larger hurdles, and both Metra and resyn_echo seem to have a real knack for keeping things fresh. I’ll be studying them more closely in the coming days

Hey, it’s great to have you here! I really appreciate the kind words as well. I worked mostly in ambient and experimental soundscapes for a long time before shifting more towards beats, so your channel sounds right up my alley! 🤘🔥

Thanks so much! Having no prior experience with trackers of any sort, it was a bit of a learning curve but at this point it’s seriously the most crucial piece of gear to me. I don’t often utilize the MIDI sequencing functionalities, unless sampling external synths into the Tracker for further mangling - it plays great with my Nord 2x 🙂 are you using PT to sequence mostly hardware or soft synths? I’m checking out your channel now and am super curious about your workflow!

@@jhooks I appreciate Trackers do take a big of getting used to, but when they settle in I think they're especially useful for the kind of intricate control IDM/braindance/whatever involves. Having gotten very used to the Tracker now, I have a tracker in my Eurorack now (the Nerdseq) which effectively means the creature now has a second brain ... I need to experiment more with it, but it should mean co-ordinated polymetric/polyrhythmic loveliness pretty easily. The physical set-up is a great octopus of cables in the Eurorack, with the Polyend Tracker as the master clock control. That talks to a MID-CV module I have, converting the MIDI out from the Tracker into clocked CV and gate to power the voices and then control some modulation. Another channel is then effectively MIDI-Thru, which I use for the Iridium Core. As I expect you know, polyphony on the Tracker uses up multiple tracks (which is why I'm fascinated by the + they're just released...) so I have to be a bit inventive if I'm doing anything with chords. However, I do really like the MIDI Chord and Arp FX on the Tracker - they work really well. With beats on it it I tend to just load up a collection of glitch noises and actual drums, then spread them across the patterns with lots of Chance and Roll FX. When I use whole breakbeats I tend to use the Slice and Random Value FX so they come out differently even as the same pattern replays. That's probably all too long an answer for you, but that's the workflow in outline at least!

@@joelnicholson wow! Really appreciate the detailed breakdown. Your setup sounds fantastic. I was at a friend’s place a few weeks back doing some similar stuff controlling their modular rig, and indeed found the Arp effect in particular yields some really spectacular results.

much appreciated! Yeah, it’s really nice seeing how responsive Polyend has been to the desires of the community wrt firmware updates and the like, and the new features they’re introducing with PT+ are making it really hard to not just pull the trigger. Looking at you, stereo sampling!
