    Would have been nice if we could see the weight on the scale and get an explanation of why.

    I am crushing up bottles and putting them in my kiln, but they are not melting completely. I've resorted to going up to 1,750 degrees to get it to melt all the way down, but there are still some shards sticking out above my mold. What am i doing wrong? I am just using glass food condiment bottles (cleaned and crushed). Please. thank you!

    But - what do you do with it? Slump in a mold? Slice up for stacking and fusing? Use as it is as a trivet? Enquiring minds want to know! Can we see what the final result is? Thanks.

    I'm just getting into glass so do you do the art shows yes grouting is terrifying I'm telling my husband that we need a tiny travel trailer to do shows... the work you held up to show us is amazing abstract art. I am BFA. I love your incorporation of dichroic. I'd like to know if you know how to slump in the microwave I don't have kiln yet....

    • @OakviewArts
      @OakviewArts 7 років тому

      I've never tried doing that. I don't think a typical microwave kiln would be big enough for a slumping mold. You can buy a 5 inch diameter one on amazon for cheap $40 but those aren't highly rated (Chinese junk maybe). I don't know...they may be good enough for doing some experimentation but might not be durable.

      thanks for your reply and I got a kiln yesterday! I did make a 5 in. circle with dicro on top of a clear piece. It is nice but thin and a couple of the dicro pieces are black blocks of color. Maybe I didn't notice that I'd not turned them over before firing. I did this in my microwave kiln. I am addicted to it and the fast way it does the glass. I even tried raking and made a couple small face like pieces. So I will continue using my microwave kiln. Thanks so much!

    Yeah,, dark colors will kill it, the same goes for combing/raking. I almost exclusively use stringer and noodles for the darker colors, because it gives you that thinner line throughout, rather than a dark colored section. Using the 3 different thicknesses of stringer helps to give more visual interest also (1mm, 2mm and .5mm).

    That's very interesting. I am just learning about pot melts in preparation for a larger kiln. I have read you can use stainless steel in a kiln - though personally have not tried it yet - so could you use stainless steel for the ring base? It seems you could and that is something I may look into. I am also thinking I could use stainless steel bowls as well for the top in which you put the glass. Of course you would have to drill your own holes. - Heidi

      You'd need to coat it with a ton of kiln wash and I've noticed that kiln wash is much more difficult to remove from the glass when it's baked at a higher temperature.

    • @OakviewArts

      Yes flattening the ingot out gets rid of most of the bubbles.
