Recycle Neckties into a Quilt - Triangles - English Paper Piecing (EPP)
One of my goals when making quilts is to use up scraps. The goal with this quilt was to use up the scraps from my two previous navy blue necktie quilts. It is my first triangle necktie quilt using English paper piecing techniques. I make these quilts without glue to avoid creating the plastic trash associated with glue.
If you are new to making quilts from upcycled neckties, I teach how to prepare the neckties in a previous video - ua-cam.com/video/1PGm83c1B80/v-deo.html - this is one of my most popular videos.
Also, check out my second necktie quilt video at ua-cam.com/video/NWmIOu-Skok/v-deo.html.
I would love to hear your experiences upcycling ties into quilts and hopefully this inspires you to use up the scraps.
The triangles are 3 inch equilateral triangles - I just found a page on Google and printed it with the correct enlargement to get the size of triangle I wanted.

Build an Igloo from Plastic Milk Jugs - Without Hot Glue
Переглядів 392 місяці тому
This video tells the story of how my family built an igloo for a Maker Faire in 2019 from about 400 plastic milk jugs. We got the jugs from our local Starbucks stores. Most people who have done this before achieved the structure by using a lot of hot glue. We wanted to make a design that we could build, take apart, and put up again in another location, so hot glue was not an option. That's why ...

Making a Protective Case for a Japanese Flute (Fue) from a PVC Tube
Переглядів 1747 місяців тому
I play an instrument called a fue or shinobue with my taiko group. The fue are made from bamboo and need to be handled carefully. I can't quickly buy a replacement if they were broken and they are also expensive. I needed to make sure that my fue would be safe in my bag, which can sometimes be squished between all our other gear. I made this case using a PVC tube as the protection. If you need ...

Upcycling My Wedding Quilt into Other Projects

When I made my wedding quilt in 1997, I had no quilt training. The quilt was not well constructed and I didn't even like the color palette! I dis-assembled it not long after that. In 2020, I remade the portion which was a portrait of me and my husband with a new denim background. In 2023, I took the pink squares and made them into small doll quilts and storage cubes. I hope this inspires you to...
Upcycling a Broken Play Tent into Play Mats (also upcycled a broken sleeping bag!)

This quilt is a complementary project to my previous necktie upcycling video (ua-cam.com/video/1PGm83c1B80/v-deo.html) from hexagon shapes. The hexagons used the wider sections of the ties, and this design upcycles the narrow sections of the ties. Plus I get to incorporate some pastel and gem color neckties, which are too rare to make into a whole quilt, but get to be the stars in this design. ...

    Wow! It is hard to imagine the amount of work that went into this! Gathering the jugs, trying different building models, storing them, and just working through this project! It certainly makes you think about the numbers of jugs we use and need to dispose of. I’m wondering if you left out the weaving and just did the knots if it would be easier and still get the same result. What I mean is tie each fluffy on 2 of the vertical threads instead of 1 and on the next row on top alternate like brick laying, tie the fluffies on 2 vertical threads again but 1 vertical thread from each of the 2 fluffies below it.

    • @trashmagination1000
      @trashmagination1000 2 місяці тому

      Wow - I appreciate that you are thinking so much about this. I encourage you to try what you are suggesting and let me know how it goes. I think when you tie one fluffy across two warp threads, you will create a much tighter weave, and that could be cool, but it will also make a smaller rug. Something to keep in mind. Let me know how it goes!

    Very interesting and so well explained. One question. Do you always tie on the same colour, or do you alternate?

    • @trashmagination1000
      @trashmagination1000 2 місяці тому

      Certainly - at the start of this video, I show a rug that is mostly gray with a blue stripe, and if you look through my Instagram (@trashmagation) you'll see all different variations of rugs I have made. I have never done a rug where I did a direct alternating of colors of fluffies (like one blue, one red, one blue, one red). That could be a fun experiment. I would have to think of a color combination that I would like to do that. For example, black and white could be cool, but I do worry the white would become gray over time when you wash that rug. Thanks for the question!

    • @michellelewis1090
      @michellelewis1090 2 місяці тому

      @@trashmagination1000 Don't do Instagram. What I meant was do you always tie on the same warp colour? On the sample for example, always on the aqua? Thanks for replying.

    • @trashmagination1000
      @trashmagination1000 2 місяці тому

      Hmmm - I'm not sure I understand your question. Clearly there is no correlation between the color of the warp threads and the color of the fluffies tied on to each one. If there was, the final rug would be a series of vertical stripes. So you just tie on whatever you want to get whatever design you want. But perhaps I am not understanding your question?

      @michellelewis1090 2 місяці тому

My favorite techniques with t-shirts are twining, using a knifty knitter (knitting rake), and most recently with multi-strand braid-in technique (attach as you go). I have also been fascinated with reusing as much of the t-shirt as possible in these and other projects. Thank you so much for sharing! P.S. I am a traditional rug hooker also! Hi - You can do strips or a continuous warp - whatever you have available. Generally I like to use the longer pieces for the weft of a rug to make it stronger, so I'm using short pieces for the warp. But if you have such abundance of t-shirts, you certainly could do either. The course is specifically to learn how to do this style of rug.
