The government has your age and a bunch of other data about you all in a database. The key value for that database should be the driver license ID. It would be very easy to make an API that takes that ID number and returns age. Websites could ask for the ID number and then get the age straight from the government.

I think the goal should be to make it as annoying as possible to access thus effectively raising the time cost of indulging it. Casinos also by law must allow you to blacklist yourself this helps people with gambling addictions avoid the temptation. It's unreasonable (and definitely unwanted) for these sites to have a registry of excluded individuals but raising the time cost of accessing this material will be enough to make some people think "what am I doing with my life?" and decide against viewing it. There's no solutions, only trade offs unfortunately.

Maybe I'm not normal, but as a young teen who first went online in the early 00s, I was pretty good at staying away from things I wasn't ready for, and the "are you 18?" check was all the warning I needed to stay away until I was ready to start peeking beyond. Raise kids to care for themselves and think for themselves, ensure they have support structures in place, and they'll be fine.

Hilariously, "free" VPNs like Proton often default to servers in those states, blocking the user from accessing the hub. I'd wager servers in those areas are cheaper for VPN providers to use. I wonder why!

What we need is a place for postivity aka blue sky. I have no idea why magats are so obsessed with us but they have been trying to follow us onto it. Not sure why when they have x and truth social but they seem to not want to hang out with other ppl like them.

About a year ago in Australia, one of the 'big two' supermarkets (local Coles) decided to rip out about half their staffed checkouts and expand the self-serve section, and most of them card-only machines. The self-serve is rarely half used (and the cash or cash-card machines being more popular), and the staffed tills are backed up with long lines. I'll call it a FAIL. An Aldi that I go to occasionally decided to put in half a dozen self-serve machines. Not that I go there that frequently, but I have NEVER seen them used. Also a FAIL. A Big-W (budget department store, owned by the other supermarket, Woolworths) only ever have one or two staff on registers and a bank of self-serve. The only reason there is a queue for the self-serve, is because only two are cash machines, the rest card-only, and they often stand empty while people wait for the cash self-serve. I have mentioned this every time I am there, but clearly management are plowing through regardless of customer convenience or wishes. Self-serve is great if you only have a couple of items. Beyond that, staff on registers are actually faster because of the ergonomics. Then there is the "oops, the computer got it wrong" element, whereby shelf price is not registering at the checkout (make up your own mind as to whether this is accidental or not) and you have to wait for the staff member in the self-serve area to sort it out. Even though these (usually greedy) giants try this, and try to get customers to pay by card, it isn't working. Plus more people take a stand and deliberately go to staffed registers to protect jobs.

These types of ads have finally started appearing on my YT a couple days ago and it's the scummiest thing I've ever seen a company do. I pause videos a lot to think so it's very f*cking annoying to see a pop-up ad on my screen when I need a moment of silence. I looked up articles on this and none of them seemed sufficiently upset about this, so I found this video, and it was incredibly cathartic. Thank you sir for making me feel a bit better about the awful reality companies have us living in
