Shoot for Realness, Not Perfection ft. Emmylou Kelly
Today I am joined by the talented wedding photographer and my wonderful friend Emmylou Kelly. She is based in the UK but works worldwide.
During the episode, we discuss how Emmylou got started in the industry, the amazing experiences she has had throughout her career (including Elevate!) and her creative practices!
Full Show Notes - www.bytomw.com/podcast/emmylou-kelly
Emmylou started her journey to becoming a photographer at the age of 30, when she decided hospitality was no longer for her and she needed a change. So, she decided to attend university. Unsure of what area to study, she thought about what gave her joy as a child - drawing and painting. Naturally, this led to fine arts, where Emmylou learned about various mediums and how to use photography as a found object to create art using other mediums.
It wasn’t until a university lecturer told Emmylou that she had an eye for photography - and from there…. she turned into becoming a highly sought after, talented wedding photographer who travels the world shooting weddings.
Episode Takeaways:
→ Being an artist requires more than simply technical skills - it requires a person to go beyond the technical aspect and find their artistic style.
→ Becoming a photographer is about not only understanding the craft and camera, it is about finding the style that works for them.

Is The Fuji XH2s Better Than The Canon R6? Autofocus & Dynamic Range Tests
I’m looking at purchasing this camera. I stumbled on this video a full year later. Is this still an issue with the current firmware at 7.1?
It’s still a problem sadly. They made it worse and better but we are about where we were a year ago.
@@bytomw Thank you for the feedback. Definitely something to take into consideration.🙏
Fujis AF is still crap in January 2025. Several Firmware updates since new haven’t fixed much.
You’re right. If anything it got worse after posting this video. I made a bunch of videos about it but in the end I just moved on.
Too much blur.. I agree the point on critical focus, but bokeh is over rated. Too much blur
If that’s the case I’d say that the X-series might give toy a nice option. It’s nice to get the character of these lenses wide open and have a little more in focus
Is "suck" an appropriate term for a serious discussion about formats?
Its not. But I couldn’t think of a better title when I originally posed this.
There is no accounting for taste. I didn't understand the point of the question about the color of a photo from a modern camera - after all, it can be adjusted in a photo editor, just like contrast or white balance, etc. In the end, you can make a special press for yourself and calm down. But if they miss the focus, the photo is trash.
You’d think so. But even with modern editing tools getting the look you want quickly and without spending more time that a clients budget allows can be a challenge. You CAN make any camera look the way you want. In the end it’s about efficiency for me. Also more and more clients are setting briefs based on a mood more than a specific set of technical requirements, it kind of means that critical focus matters much less than it used to (although personally I prefer having a solid AF performer for most of my work).
Too much is made of out-of-focus areas (bokeh) - it's not very important at all.
I’d say your opinion is that of the majority but I still disagree. It takes all sorts right?
This a brilliant interview! Licensing in particular is a really difficult monster to tame. For instance you licence an image for 2 years, then when the client renews you also have to also negotiate a new licence with the models that appeared in that image! Also, finding your niche can be really hard for instance I have taught myself how to light and shoot most genres and seem to have fallen into the 'lifestyle' genre which is a word that seems to cover a lot of things. It's the largest genre on most photo agents platforms (i.e. Photopolitic, Wonderful Machine) with the largest number of photographers doing it. It's also a word that I don't particularly like. I'm really at the stage where I should niche more. I really love Barry's insight and the great questions Tom.
Thanks Chris, Honestly I really like the term lifestyle. To me it's so broad because there are so many different lifestyles to cater for. The images and the visuals that we see in this category need to be broad to help us see more of ourselves in the images. I totally get the frustration though, it's hard to get seen among so many others!
True, there are different areas within Lifestyle ie lifestyle fashion, outdoor lifestyle etc. It can be broad but I think you have to find your niche within it or marketing is difficult … and that’s where I am, I shoot fashion, environmental portraits, cars. Whilst the variety is great, I think I’m going to have to niche more to help me progress.
I really love the gfx system. I can get so much more out of adapting lenses, and adapting lenses designed for bigger systems. I think we need more native lenses for the system, the only native lens I have is the mitakon 65mm and that's 3rd party. If someone made a nice 35mm f1.8, maybe even f1.4, I'd be very happy.
Honestly you could do worse than the sigma art line for that focal length. The 35mm 1.4 seems to cover well and it performs pretty well too!
Which lens did you have on the crop sensor?
I don't know which shots you're referring to specifically but on the fuji system I had the 18mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4, 33mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2 WR I sued the 18mm 1.4 and 33mm 1.4 the most often.
Dude you are talking nonsense really, colours are everything , not everyone wants to sit and spend lots of time editing
That’s exactly what I said in the video. Just because you can get good colour from a camera with extra work doesn’t make it right for you… but people are overstating how “bad” Sonys colour is in the real world.
Yeah, I can confirm, Sony colors do suck, all A1-7 models are terrible, except Sony A9 series, which has quite different colors. Looks like Sony A1-7 are developed by color blind people. There is no real fix for that.
It can’t be a sensor issue though because everyone but Canon is using them. Even Fujis have Sony made sensors. (Like the GFX 50s)
@@bytomw two things to remember, Sony offers fab for custom designs as well, so not all Sony sensors are the same. Secondly, every company has it's own CFA designs and processing of sensor data -- all raw files are cooked to some degree. Even if you take Fuji cameras their Bayer sensors show distinctly different colors than their X-trans, even when the sensor chips are the same. CFA plays an important role in color separation, especially in a very narrow orange/yellow spectrum, where red-green channels have large overlap and separation is tricky. Many types of color blindness in people are due to cones missing, or having sensitivity issues, or having slightly off color profile. People don't even know they are color blind until tested.
8:06 your using a full frame lens on a Medium Format? mmmm while adding critique? The scene was lovely.
I am! I think the voigtlander is an amazing pairing with the GFX. I was just pointing out the limits of the capabilities of that combo. More recently I applied AI Denoise to these images in Lightroom and they are now almost perfect.
@bytomw Your history of Medium Format was flawless. Great job.
Hi Tom, Been pro since 98 I use two systems… Fujifilm gift 100s/XT5 for my slow artist work… 110 f2 and 23 1.4 ,just 2 lenses And i use Nikon Zsystem… i love both, but i use the Nikon for events fast pace enviroments. But for my slow pro work i use Fujifilm, love the colours and love medium format look… i have tried to create the Nikon files to look the same or close to the FUJIFILM, and is just not possible, at least for me. Couldn’t agree more with your statement. Great vid
Thanks for the kind words! Fuji colours are lovely.
No mention of the 50mm F1.0 from Fuji while you keep saying fujifilm can’t give the same portrait bokeh…
The 50mm F1.0 is a 75mm F1.5 equivalent. You could get the same depth of field from an 85mm 1.8 that’s smaller lighter and focuses more accurately than the Fujinon. I don’t enjoy shooting short tele lenses as much as normal/wide lenses but if that’s your thing that’s cool. If you discount the focal length of a lens and just want to look at depth of field alone Fuji also make a 200mm F2.0 you might want to try.
Nice! Subscribed!
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the videos 👌
Has this been fixed with the latest firmware?
It’s still not fixed. By all accounts it’s roughly the same now as when I shared this video (although it got worse after I posted this)
I don't understand why you use the phrase "clinically sharp" in focus is in focus, I personally think you wasted your money.
That’s not the case. All lenses render detail differently. More detail is absolutely NOT always better. If your aim is more detail at the cost of everything else you’re right this would be a waste of money 👍🏻 I personally like a softer feel to my portrait images and care far less about detail than the character of the lenses I’m using.
@@bytomw A softer in focus area is one thing, but missed focus often plainly look bad. Most cameras add sharpness. You can turn this off if you prefer a more analog level sharpness. I've been looking at mirrorless precisely to get away from missed focus (for manual focusing) when putting my wide aperture lenses to their best use.
@@TheDavveponken I have been on mirrorless since the launch of the Sony A7ii. It’s fantastic for achieve critical focus regardless of system (although fujifilms autofocus is currently broken so tread carefully). That said as critical focus gets easier it gets less important and people start looking for alternatives there is a huge trend towards less sharp less in focus images because they have a “vibe”. Not saying anything is right or wrong but knowing is 1/2 the battle.
You know nothing
With the first series of images, I was quickly able to pick out what images came from which cameras. The green undertones in the skin gave away the Sony. It's one of the things that made me switch back to Canon after a month, and that was even when I didn't have images from other cameras to compare against. It just stood out to me... especially on darker skin tones. The GFX had more depth and 3d pop to it, and I thought it had the most pleasing look out of all three due to the mix of color and character. The X-H2s had the most accurate skin tones, but in my opinion, lacked some character when compared to the GFX.
Pretty spot on assessment. I’m not gonna run out and buy a song over a GFX anytime soon. That said this colour is way nicer than what I see from most other Sony cameras.
I would love to watch a video with your opinion about Nikon system, lenses, color science and raw latitude and wrokflow. I'm very curious about what Nikon is doing and i know there is a very good adapter for Sony lenses on Nikon bodies with full functions.
Happy to do it. I’m still getting my reps in with the ZF but overall I’m very very happy. It’s as good as I’d ever need it to be.
Excellent, excellent interview!
Thanks Joakim! It’s been a nice change to have these more relaxed podcasts!
Like before watching haha, love Emmylou’s work 🙌🏼
She's a genuinely lovely person and an incredible talent!
For video Canon or Fuji?
It depends on what you need, if you want focus tracking that's foolproof and full frame aesthetics it's the canon. That said I think Flog2 looks better than Clog3.
Does the 58mm cover the sensor ?
It does. You get some pretty heavy vignette but it’s totally correctable.
My hypothesis: they hired new people to lead the software AF department and they turned out to be incompetent. This happened to a company I worked for way back when (1990s). It's quite difficult to backtrack from that sort of dead end, both bureaucratically and software-wise.
I really hope they manage to overcome the problems. It’s frustrating largely because the other aspects of the cameras have so much to offer. Here’s hoping they manage to correct it in 2025.
V7 did fix it however it’s not 1.0 fix but was still better then my s5iix when I shot a wedding for video at least
That’s good to hear about the Fuji but a shame for the Panasonic. I know lots of people seem to love the S5ii line for doc work and weddings. I guess canon and Sony have set a high bar!
What really blows my mind is the difference between the quality of this video and the XH2s video from 2022. It shows what Fujifilm could do and broke :( ua-cam.com/video/zetbe9CP1p0/v-deo.html
The only downside to Fuji is its AF. It lacks far behind the big guys. If Fuji figures this out… 📈
Fully agree there. If you don’t need AF the Fuji rocks.
More than one year later and the issue is still here. I’m assuming is not a software issue but a hardware and they cannot do anything until the next flagship camera launches
It was totally workable (if slow) at launch. They essentially busted the camera in firmware 3.0 and then pretended it didn’t happen. They finally announced they are working on a fix over a year later. I already moved on 😂
You said this better than anyone I’ve heard speak about digital medium format. I just picked up a Hasselblad X1Dii in 2024 and I absolutely love the experience. Subbed 👊
Thanks man! I try and be as balanced as possible. Hope you enjoy the channel.
@@bytomw enjoying it! Listening to the other “podcast” types. Not enough conversations about real photography these days
Hopefully it’s helpful. I had to slow down because work picked up in a big way but I’ll be back to talking to photographers ASAP.
@@bytomw that’s a good thing! Looking forward to more medium format stuff for sure!
😞😞😞 I never really noticed the issues because I generally shoot single-point. But recently started trying to use AF-C more often.....and it's been surprising.
It’s frustrating because of how much I loved the brand otherwise. If they tackled this they’d be unstoppable.
@@bytomwnext months firmware release promise to fix the bug. Let's see if that is true
You advise people that Sony colors are as good, but film yourself with Fujifilm. I am not looking for advise or reasurance. Sony colors are still very bad when compared to Fuji, Canon and Nikon and no amount of reasoning can’t change that.
You're advocating for not using reasoning?
What abt the xs10 does it have autofocus problems?
I haven’t had any hands on time with the XS10 but I believe that works on their older focus system so shouldn’t be effected by the bug.
My thing it's i want something small. That only left Sony or Fuji. I don't like Sony but seems like the only option, i had a pair of Sony cameras years ago. I like Nikon and Canon but even their smallest cameras (Z30, ZFC, R50, R10) feel big when compared to the XT30, XE4, etc. And Canon ban third party lenses. I'm only a hobbyist but even for the dogs in the park or my nephew jumping with his skateboard I need good AF. I'll wait. I'll stick with my old smaller DSLRs, using central point AF, until at least 2025. But then i want to go full on mirrorless. I don't know if Fuji, Nikon, Canon or Sony.
Having used them all and owning two full systems at the moment I’m pickup up my Nikon Zf most often.
I just can't work with a Sony. I tried switching from the Fuji X-S10 to the A7CII. Same great sensor as the A7IV, "new Sony color science", and incredible AF as you have mentioned. But I just cannot get that weird yellow-green-orange color cast to separate out how I like them. Returned it and traded in the X-S10 for the X-S20. Now, I have worked with Fuji raw files much more than Sony, so there is a learning curve there, but damn the Fuji colors just look pleasing and balanced with almost no modifications.
It’s not just you I teach post production and Sony files are by far my least favorite to work on
This video was uploaded two months ago and there still isn’t even an official admission that anything is amiss. I would sell my camera and gear if I didn’t think that the negative publicity would be tanking the value…
It’s been over a year since my original video on the topic. They told me directly there was an issue then and haven’t spoken to me since or fixed the problem. My verdict would be that fujifilm is amazing as long as you’re willing to do the focusing for the camera (aka manually focus or single point and match distance
Here comes some constructive critics. I don’t agree that the focus of the Sony is on the iris and is rather on the eyebrows. I used to have the same problem with Sony and that’s why I sold it especially when you have very fast lenses I had the same problem with the Sony GF lenses, and with the sigma ones. Second a like the colours of the gfx way better the apsc picture is very yellow and doesn’t look good to me. Also the whole rendering of the gfx looks just more 3d and pleasing to me. Thanks for the comparison cheers
No problem, if you saw the results and came to a different conclusion that's still a win in my book! Always want to show my working out.
I shoot raw with my Canon R6 Mark II and use the “Cobalt Image” Fuji profiles (about $80) and you get the absolute best of both worlds. My images are beautiful and have those Fuji colors and the ease of use and focus of the Canon.
Love that this is an option for peeps after those films sims.
really fantastic and well done review, thanks!
Thanks for the kind words I appreciate it.
Tom, what do you think of the Zf? Debating to get a Zf as a big brother for my X100vi
I love it. Genuinely an amazing camera. I have the 40mm F2 and the 35mm 1.4. The 35 is the one for me.
That sure looks just like the lens
Not sure I follow but thanks for taking the time to comment
What is that m6 profile you are applying? What camera/color profile is it based on? I have an xh2s and an looking for a rich but neutral baseline profile to work from with my xh2s. Adobe Color/Standard dont always give nice results, and I've been using Provia usually with some tweaks to try to balance it, but I haven't been able to get it exactly where I want it.
It’s made by a company I beta test for called Goodlight Presets. They developed amazing custom profiles for Lightroom.
It's amazing Fuji seems to have a big QA process problem like this, after all they get right. But here we are. Thanks for making this video. And a shout-out to Edvard who has been showing us these problems too.
It’s frustrating for sure. I’m just glad I was in a position to move on (as expensive as that was)
@@bytomw By the way, I must commend you on how you described your Canon experience. Sounds about right, but I welcome this kind of objective balanced set of observations, all pros and cons as you found them for your workflow/job.
Lightroom is the problem mate. Try capture one, it's a night and day difference for detail and sharpness for Fuji. It's really criminal how dirty adobe does Fuji.
I have used both. It’s not appreciably different on export 👍🏻 it looks better in C1 while you edit though.
When I try with my xt5 (ver 4.0)+ 23mmF1.4 LM on AFC object tracking(with back buttom focus lock), sometimes it just not focusing on the green box , It could be focused on a tree behind the subject (street cat most of the time). I had enough with fuji, Im just gonna move to sony A7cii or nikon Z6iii. Color correction could be adjust, but focus missing is fxxxxx up. ( wtf are ur software team working on, FUJI !!) Nice video by the way(^ω^)
I’m sure they are working super hard on this stuff even if it’s not fixed yet. That said I’m loving my Nikon ZF. It scratches the retro itch.
@bytomw Thanks for the reply. Yeah.... working super hard on their firmsim 😂 ,they should hire the software team from om to fix their autofocus. ZF is a good choice, but for me, I was thinking of getting into wildlife /birding/bugs, so I do want some better handling when I'm shooting tele
Hey great interview Tom and thanks for the shoutout, Barry!
Anytime! You all do great work for photographers!
Stop buying cheap lenses and stop expecting ten year old lenses to keep up.
I was using the 18mm 1.4 LM, 23mm 1.4 LM 33mm 1.4 LM and the 56mm 1.2 WR and had exactly the same problems as Harris. Also I REGULARLY use lenses over 10 years old on my canons and they perform flawlessly. No matter how you slice it this is fujis problem and blaming professionals for not relying on the system for their own work seems counter productive.
I just bought an X-H2s, only to find all these videos telling how bad the AF is, typical for me. I'll have 30 days to return it, but I did see one video where the bird tracking seemed to work quite well. My newest body is an X-T2, which I've enjoyed quite a bit. I'm not a professional, and I never video people, or do vlogs. I have no interest in going back to an old version of the firmware, it doesn't perform, I'll return it and go to plan C (Canon).
If you’re not relying on the system to pay the bills I’d say you’re fine. That said I’d recommend almost any other system for AF right now. As an aside I think the XT2 is criminally underrated. Stunning colours and super reliable even if it isn’t the most modern AF system.
Buy New Fujinon XF lens. You re welcome. I just find out the truth about autofocus. New Lens for new Sensor 40MP.
I had the 18,23 and 33 LM lenses and the 56mm 1.2 WR. They all had the same issues 👍🏻
I love Fujifilm cameras and a few years ago I had to sell my XT3 and all my gear. I have been thinking of buying an XT5 and a few lenses again. This autofocus issue has me thinking regarding going forward with my decision. Thank you for this video.
If you enjoy Fuji and don’t need tracking autofocus I’d say you’ll still be fine. If you want something that has a more advanced focus system sadly I don’t think this is there yet.
I sold my X100V because i got bored of the single focal length eventually and went to a a6700… wow the difference in autofocus is incredible.
It's pretty amazing how far the rest of the field has moved. Sony and Canon especially but even Nikon with the Z9 and later cameras.
