Parker Lake 2024
Parker Lake in the California Easter Sierra is one of the easier alpine lakes to access. It is in a stunning location looking toward a steep sided valley of very colourful mountain peaks. A very highly recommended hike.

Mt Whitney - The Jewel in the Crown

Hiking to the summit of Mt Whitney should rank high on the achievement scale for anyone. In spite an embarrassing effort with my camera exposures I hope this video will install in many a desire to reach this lofty summit. Summiting Whitney filled us with feelings of awe and grandeur and a deep sense of gratitude for the trail builders who made this possible.

If you at Onion Valley in the Eastern Sierras and have already explored the Kearsarge Pass Trail you might want to try the hike to Robinson Lake. It's a short hike and the trail in places not well defined but it is doable and very rewarding when you arrive at the lake.

If you are in the Mammoth Lakes area of California I would recommend a hike to Duck Pass and take in Duck and Pika Lakes. It is a wonderful day trip and the lakes are two beauties. The switch backs up Duck Pass are another wonder of the trail building in the Sierras.

There is no more rugged breed of man than the New Zealand and Italian tunnellers. These rugged men spent their working careers underground, never seeing the light of day while working in at times very dangerous conditions, on the many miles of tunnels on the Tongariro Power Development. This is their story.

We have hiked to Bishop Pass on several occasions and it truly is a great hike. On a fine October day in 2013 we decided to do something different and head off the Bishop Pass trail to Treasure Lakes. We were rewarded with beautiful lakes situated beneath high mountain peaks. We discovered two lakes but our efforts were frustrated in finding more.

Very good video. Our family lived in Hinerangi St 1965-1983. Moved there from Mangakino. It was basically a dust bowl in the early days, as no grass had been sown. When we moved into our new house, the MOW gave dad a bag of grass seed. Myself and my two brothers went to Tūrangi Primary School then on to Tongariro High. I left school in 1978 and joined the army. A really good place to grow up, with plenty to do.

Thanks Ken for the comments. Our trip into the Miter Basin was really awesome. We wound up on the south side of Long Lake a bit by accident. There were a couple of other hikers on that side and we just followed thinking they knew the place better than us. We did find a superb camp spot. How difficult is the climb to Crabtree Pass? Is there a bit of a trail?

One of my favorite places in the Sierra, even as a Ranger. You captured the trip perfectly. I'm not sure how you ended up on the north side of Long Lake, the trail is on the south side, but it all works out! If you ever go up again, another hour hike beyond SBL is Crabtree Pass, with additional wonderful views. I've slept in the Basin during a lightning storm, very memorable!

Mr Richard Print, builder, was the main builder, if I remember correctly. Some of the signs that used to adorn the entrance to the township: 'Turangi, town of the future' 'Turangi, a town for all seasons' 'Turangi, trout capital of the world'

We weren't expecting to find much of a trail beyond the Lake but were pleasantly surprised how good the trail was so we kept pushing up. The several false horizons dashed hopes several times. It was a long hard slog but the views from on top made the effort worthwhile as you will know. We live In New Zealand. We fly back to California to hike the Sierras next weekend.
