At Butterfly Learnings, I work as a psychologist, providing counseling for parents and children aged six to 16 years. I also conduct various psychological assessments.
Today, I want to share with you an insightful case study about a five-year-old girl who came to Butterfly Learnings with motor development issues. She had trouble walking and climbing stairs, which are common milestones children typically achieve between the ages of 12 to 15 months for walking and up to 2 years for running and kicking a ball.
We recommended occupational therapy to address her motor development delays. Occupational therapy focuses on improving gross motor movements, fine motor skills, and basic movements. For children, certain developmental milestones should be met at specific ages. For example, a child should start rolling over by four to five months, crawling by nine to ten months, and walking by 12 to 15 months. If there are any delays, it is often indicative of motor developmental issues that require intervention.
In this girl's case, she struggled with both fine and gross motor skills. She had difficulty with simple tasks like holding a pencil, buttoning her clothes, and climbing stairs. Our occupational therapy sessions included a variety of exercises and activities designed to improve these skills. For fine motor skills, we used pegboards, games, and other activities that required her to pick up small objects repeatedly. For gross motor skills, we focused on activities like running, walking in a straight line, and climbing stairs.
After six months of continuous therapy, we observed significant improvements. She could walk properly, climb stairs without support, and perform other motor tasks appropriate for her age. This progress was a result of dedicated therapy and the support of her parents.
Occupational therapy also addresses sensory issues. Some children have severe sensory problems related to touch, sound, or vision. For example, a child might be overly sensitive to touch or have difficulty with certain textures. In such cases, we use sensory integration techniques as part of the therapy.
At Butterfly Learnings, we believe in involving parents in the therapy process. We demonstrate the activities and exercises to the parents so they can continue the therapy at home. This collaborative approach ensures that the child continues to improve outside the therapy sessions as well.
Early intervention is crucial for addressing motor developmental delays. Early treatment can help your child cover these milestones more quickly and effectively.
