Making a phone stand from scrapwood
Переглядів 842Місяць тому
I wanted to make a simple phone stand or phone holder to give as gifts to my teammates at work. I was wondering how to make it more interesting, and Siri gave me this piece that her friend @viciousguitars7966 laminated for a guitar. This "scrap" was supposed to be a part of a guitar and it looked so cool! The Wenge, Maple, and Walnut stripes are really fine. It's a shame that this piece didn't ...
How to set up a NEW Japanese Handplane
Переглядів 2 тис.2 місяці тому
Japanese hand planes are pretty fun to play with. I'm no Japanese handplane expert, but I filmed the process of setting up my new 60mm Japanese hand plane. I didn't give this hand plane the full make-over such as "folding the ears" or replacing the rod, but I did enough to get thin shavings and have it as a working plane for the workshop. Yes, it takes some time and effort to set it up, but I w...

      Have you had success with kiln dried ash as well? Just realized I didn't test with ash

    I do have one that I have gotten to cut fairly well. What I am wondering is where to find a plane hammer like you show for changing the shape/flatness of the iron.

      @Siriandpepper Місяць тому

      This one is from Japan, but you could use an anvil and a plane hammer as a substitute!

      I did have to change one plane iron, and I think I used my straight claw hammer to do it. I just wish there was a source for these types of things in the US, and plane irons and bodies. Have to use other woods....

    Japanese say sanding after planing ruins the surface & opens pores. A cleanly cut wood face severs the fibres cleanly and they close by themselves, there a giving a decent level of water protection to wood surfaces. Snd you just can't beat the cut whisper sound and gosssmer thin shavings.

    Well done. The moment when you were yanking the floating tennons out in a hurry was very relatable. You have a good eye for editing.

    Outstanding video. It's great to see you learning as you go. I really wish I'd had something like this when i first picked up a Japanese plane. Subbed. Also rolling a but on a chisel is such a great technique. I learned it in highschool but I've not seen someone else use it since.

    I hate the fact you have to buy a plane with a blunt ass blade and have to spend the time to fix something that coulda been done before we bought it <_<
