For those who have been to my website, you may have seen on the "Recent Work" page, which shows an image of a "before and after" of a rock I demolished. As Paul Harvey used to say, "Here is the REST of the Story". That was just one of several shots for the project. It was very remote so cover was not necessary. This video includes only two blasts of the several performed. I was just learning ab...

Drilling and Blasting for a road widening project on the back side of Lake Cocolalla, ID. The powder factor was get kept intentionally low to reduce fly rock. Due to the excessive lateral seems, (which was not known before detonation) some of the rock just cracked instead of breaking up. The height and size prevented cover with soil. Blast mats were not available.

This was a 1000 sq ft plus homesite of some very hard rock. 200 plus holes were hand-drilled with a CP-69 hand drill. Most holes were 35mm dia. Some were as large as 2" dia. Hole depths were two to four feet.

Good Job, you are nearly as bad as me when it comes to doing large jobs with just a hand drill. I would not be to concerned about the throw on the first shot, you will always get throw with shallow holes. Good breakage, leave the spacing the same and back off the load a little for a bit more stem height and it should be perfect. But as you say, when you use that "lifting powder" it does tend to throw.

Good work Dan. I like the "Clint Eastwood Bundle" @5:50. I hope I never have to do one of these jobs. Once again explosives provide a cost effective solution to a difficult problem.
