Hello!!! Thanks for stopping by. My name is Cody and I love cheap guitars! I'm not a "real" guitarist. Not even close. I'm actually a drummer with a broken back. I've always had guitars around and played them for fun. I was "JUST GOOD ENOUGH" to play rhythm guitar in a couple of bands (I also sang) but I AM NOT a real guitarist. However, I do love playing guitar and I have a collection of cheap guitars. I have owned "real" guitars over the years but find myself drawn to guitars I'm not afraid to setup myself. In researching the guitars I'm interested in buying, I found very few, if any, reviews of the guitars. The reviews I do find were done by "real" guitarists, on very expensive equipment usually. None by hacks like me, on budget gear. So I thought, "Why not do some reviews of guitars I already own?" Then I thought, why not do my budget pedals as well? So, I'm starting with the guitars but moving through my gear as I go. I'm new so any suggestions are more than welcome!
AMAZON BUDGET CHEAP FULL SIZE Electric Guitar DST-200 Solid Body Beginner Intermediate & Pro Players
Thanks for stopping by!! This has been my most adventuresome video yet!! I did the unboxing and first thoughts, and the camera died. I wasn't smart enough to realize it until I was over an hour into it. YAY!!! As far as the guitar...
With Christmas coming, I'm asked about beginner guitars more frequently. I thought about all the guitars available at different levels and which one I would recommend. I'd seen this one appear in my feed and thought it could be a contender....
I was pleasantly surprised by this guitar. I'd seen a few of the videos and read some of the reviews and, for the most part, everyone was correct! At least in my experience. The screws in the bridge will definitely be an issue once the action is lowered. The tuners get the job done but that's about it. The nut will have to be cut on the low E to get the action and intonation where they need to be. The frets are grimy but in good shape overall. I haven't found any high frets and there's no sprout. The edges are nicely done as well. I'll roll the edges at some point but that's just my preference. The neck is straight with reasonable relief. The guitar was close to in tune when I pulled it out of the box except for the A and B strings and being a half step down. The neck is, for me, the bright spot of this guitar! It just feels good in my hand. The shape, radius, feel of the wood, all make it close to my ideal. The humbucker, quite frankly, sucks. It needed to be raised considerably and even that didn't help much. The single coils are fine for now and probably won't be changed. The headstock is matte and the body is gloss. That was a new one for me. The stock strings stink (as expected) so I'm anxious to get good stings on it, polish the frets, cut the nut, adjust the bridge, set the intonation and give her a good couple hours of play time!
As for a beginner guitarist... I think for kids, the Mitchell MM100 is a fine choice and definitely was more "playable" out of the box. For a full-size human, the Harley Benton TE40 was more playable initially but feels much cheaper in materials. I think there are probably better instruments for a beginner out there but finding one at the sub $100 price point is challenging. This Donner definitely comes close. At $179, I wouldn't touch this guitar honestly. There are too many "real" guitars available at that point.
Hopefully this video will help you feel a little more informed about how to spend your hard-earned money.
Please let me know if you have any experience with this guitar in particular or Donner instruments in general. Like and subscribe if you want to and as always, thank you for being a part of our little corner of the web!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out the Behringer TM300 Tube Modeling Pedal. It's not a fuzz box or distortion pedal in the traditional sense. It's an actual modeler. It's trying it's best (and doing a decent job of it) to sound like a Fender, Mesa and a Marshall. I could play on the Mesa and Marshall settings all day! They don't sound like the real things but for $25?!!? They're inspiring ...

Very Cool, Thankyou. Great Demo/Review. Showed all the Awesome Sounds the Pedal provides. I really enjoy this pedal on my 12 Pedal all Behringer pedal board (lol), It Rocks. Stunning looking and Sounding Guitar and playing too. All the Best. Cheers
@@GRBAquatics Thank you for your far-too-kind comments! I’m not sure how many of the behringer pedals I have currently but, this one is a stand out and if I were starting, with just a single pedal, this might be it! I’m impressed with most of the behringer pedals I’ve used. Thanks for contributing and if you don’t mind me asking… What’s your favorite on your board?
@@cheapguitarchannel518 My 'Behringer Board' consists of Chromatic Tuner-TU300, Pre-Amp Booster-PB100, Compressor Sustainer-CS400, Spectrum Enhancer-SE200, Vintage Tube OverDrive-TO800, Tube OverDrive-TO100, Overdrive Distortion-OD100, Tube Amp Modeller-TM300. Bass Graphic Equalizer-BEQ700, Digital Multi Effects-FX100, Vintage Delay -VD400, Digital Reverb-DR600. I do think this Tube Amp Modeller is my Favorite, but the Compressor/Sustainer adds such a nice 'tone' and the Pre-Amp Booster just lifts everything to another level. Many of these pedals where purchased used, some new. Very Impressed with all of them. The Spectrum Enhancer is a bit of a laugh, not really sure it does much but I do like it a lot ... for some reason lol. Cheers
Some of the names that Uli comes up with have me laughing sometimes! I think the EQ and chorus are my next two favorites so I might do one of them next. For the price, they're hard to beat!

@@brianblair1478 that’s awesome! I have zero regrets about hanging onto it for decades (not that anyone would want it) because the scout has never let me down! $32 you should’ve bought 10 of them! lol. Thanks for being here and contributing!!
Sure, today, cheap guitars can be good but I'm concerned about where the wood comes from and in what condition it was cut.
Thanks for contributing, and watching brands like Gibson, crushing exotic wood guitars under bulldozers, is beyond heartbreaking. It’s hard to support companies like that for me. I’m encouraged that more companies are making quality hpl and carbon fiber instruments. The new Martin acoustics sound pretty dang good for not being solid wood!
I suggest to you to use some petroleum jelly in the tuners, disassemble all the tuners and check that they are perfectly flat within the body of the bass, this bridge have some small screws that need some ajustments in order to be precise, with no instructions from the builder is basically and autodidact work. I have mine working good, I might change the preamp to an audere classic with 4 bands of eq, and shield all the electronics cavity.
Thank you Julian! I’m definitely working on the tuners. Are you changing the preamp because you’re not happy with it or is it just a preference? There’s not much about the electronics I don’t like. It’s just the small issues I need to address. Overall, I’m more impressed with it as time has passed. Thanks for being here and contributing some valuable insights. It’s very Mach appreciated!
@@cheapguitarchannel518 kinda noisy when you boost all the way the highs but I think it's more about shielding than the preamp itself, it has a gain pot inside to control the overall output, soundwise I don't like the mid control, I think it lacks some control. One thing is that I have not changed strings lol so that would be the first step. (a bit difficult to find super long strings on the local markets here in Colombia or very pricy). I think I may have a diagram of the iyv preamp, someone in facebook shared it to me.
Cool deal. Let me know if you need some help with the strings.

This is actually a really GREAT Amp in general, "for the money" or not even. Just the no maintenance factor makes it great!
@@squirelova1815 squire you ain’t lying! I’m very tempted to get another to try a stereo rig. Or possibly the 50 just for a little variety. I’m continually impressed by this little amp’s capabilities! It’s never let me down in any situation so far. I love tubes but not as far as throw it in the car and go. This amp? ALL DAY! If it had an efx loop it might be close to perfect in my book. Thanks for being here and contributing. Every opinion and perspective matters!

@@Jayed-ff6pc I think it can only play distorted music!
You hear people talking about the Vox Pathfinder, but the Rage 258 (and the 158, for that matter) sound much better at high gain than the Vox does.
@@SirDerp909 I’ve unfortunately never been able to play through the Vox yet. I had a Peavey Express 112 at one point that really impressed me but dang, it weighed like it was the CS800s cousin!

@@davidbanner7972 Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback and glad you are happy with the guitar. Idk how Ibanez does it quite honestly. Even their “cheap, beginner” guitars are far better than my talent requires!
Thinking about picking one of these up today. If i do get a 3/4 would you recommend this for 99 over an ibanez gio mikro used for 119/new for 129?
Man, that's a tough one... I realize my experience with this guitar hasn't been everyone's, but having never played a "bad" Ibanez, my leaning would be toward the Mikro. Especially if I couldn't play either of them beforehand. (mail-order) I've only played the Mikro basses and was impressed with the 4 strings but returned the 5 due to quality issues. Ibanez's consistency is hard to beat in my experience. IF you can play them (you're going into GC), play them all. Every one of them. Aggravate the salesmen if you have to! LOL Play them till one "agrees" with you. Keep in mind the strings might not be the ones you want, or the necks can be adjusted etc. There's nothing like being able to put hands on before you lay out your hard-earned money, and even free returns are a hassle. Thanks for being here and contributing. Let us know how you decided!
I'm going to buy secondhand Mitchell MM100 here in Philippines... being having small hands and short fingers this is what i need
Hello Retro and thanks for being here! I’m doing a follow up video now but, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this guitar. Look for the newest video and there’ll be some tips in it.
If you had opted for tv jones thunderblades, string spacing wouldn't have been an issue... though putting 2 $150 pickups in a $299 bass is honestly not a wise financial move...I went through 3 junior jets to find one that was truely worthy of upgrades and it turned out to be the earlier single pickup g2202 model, so I guess I got off cheap, or at least cheaper
Thanks for being here and contributing! The financials were definitely a consideration. I love the way the bass plays but, the music I perform with it screams (pun intended) for humbuckers. I’ll most likely keep tinkering with it until I get it where I want it. I’m curious to what the 2202 cost you in total and if it plays similarly to the other jets.
@@cheapguitarchannel518 My first was a g2022 2 pickup model like yours, I pumped money into it but just couldn't warm up to it...2nd one was an early korean-made g2202 single pickup, that one had a nice sound but the neck was bowed and the truss rod nut was damaged...the keeper I have now is a 2010 chinese-made g2202, paid $250 for it with a hipshot kickass bridge and gotoh tuners already on it, I put in a tv jones thunderblade with a push/pull volume pot for series/parallel switching, a graphite nut, proper gretsch arrowhead knobs and a metal input jack plate...of the 3, it's the heaviest by far, gotta be right around 10 pounds, but it has the feel of a solid professional instrument
when are you gonna talk about how the mm100 is after using it for a while, we need more content
You got it! I’ll start on it next! Thanks for letting me know!
sounds way better with both you might try setting the pickup height
Thanks man! I'm still playing with this guitar and continue to be more and more impressed. I'll try adjusting the pickup heights and see what kind of response I can get. It's kinda messed up that it's no longer (currently) available on Amazon. My guess is, it'll be back with a much higher price tag! I hope not because it's a pretty amazing instrument and anyone should be happy to have one. I'm just torn on doing a follow up now. Thanks for your feedback and being a part of our little corner of the web. Your thoughts and opinions are always welcome and can only make the community better!
You need to back up from the camera so we can see the guitar and your playing
Thank you Brenda! I’m definitely not a cinematographer and still learning everyday! Unfortunately, like my guitars, the rest of my equipment is way smarter than me too! I’ve been rearranging stuff so my space has become much smaller but hopefully I can remedy that soon. I still can’t believe anyone actually wants me in their eyeholes so actually requesting to see my horrific playing?!? IM FLATTERED!! Seeing the guitar? I completely understand. It’s beautiful. Thank you for being here and contributing! I promise, I’ll do my best to be better.
I had bought 3 basses like this and they are great for the price. They have improved the quality of the screws and all came with metal washers, all bought on ebay. Mine are almost perfect, I can't complain because of the price. (Sorry, English is not my first language)
That’s great to hear Julian! I’m glad they fixed the screw issues. It’s a great bass (especially for the price) that exceeded most of my expectations. The small flaws I had to fix are by no means indicative of how the bass plays and sounds now. Just a warning to beginners that don’t have the skill set to fix those kinds of issues. Thanks for being here and contributing your experience. It helps everyone to hear different perspectives and experiences. Thank you and cheers my friend!
I got one delivered neck removed also. My neck screws "wallered out" very easily too. I got threaded inserts to replace the wood screws and now I have steel machine screws. Perfect solution. My nut was fine. Fit and finish are not perfect but not an issue at the price point. The B sting is 35", so you will be best served with long scale bass strings. I suppose you could Add a long scale single B string to a standard 4 string set, but I go long scale and happy. Wait to cut strings until after intonation and adjustments. I am considering adding a wood plate using small and short threaded inserts to the end of the "non-headstock", so I can bend the strings over and get rid of the sharp and scratchy wild sting problems and save my gig bag from a snag. I love this bass. So glad I purchased it.
Man, soooo glad you’re here! I wondered if anyone else had these issues. I almost messed up by cutting them too soon! I’m going to try your solutions because I’m loving this bass more and more. Please keep me (and everyone else) updated on your plate inserts. It’s definitely not perfect but it sounds and plays far beyond what I was expecting. I’m keeping it! Thanks again for sharing your insights and experience.
Thank you for your review of this bass! I just ordered one myself now (after watching your video) and can´t wait to test it.
I think you’ll enjoy it. Just be aware of the issues. The other channels I saw review it, seemed to have no issues other than the string breaking over the zero fret. I’m still amazed they can produce an instrument of this quality at this price point. If you order it with the neck detached, be VERY judicious with the screws. One of them on mine was so soft, as soon as it hit the first resistance, the head almost collapsed. If anything you saw helped you make a more informed decision, I feel like it’s worth it. Enjoy the bass and thanks for being in our little corner of the universe!
@@cheapguitarchannel518 I will be aware of the issues. I'm not a bass player, but need one for homerecording. How are the string's they ship with the bass. Do they "zing" ? And the pickups, are they any good in your opinion? I read somewhere that another guy that ordered that bass wanted a 4 string instead, and painted different. They fixed that for him with no problem. I like that, the possibility to custom made your guitar for some extra money. Can't do that if I order my instrument from my local Music Store.
Yeah I can’t either. It’s amazing what’s available now. The strings that came with it weren’t bad at all. It took me a few tries to find strings that worked so I ended up boiling the first set after a while until the new ones came in. I have no issues with the pickups or electronics but others are reporting some issues with shielding and overall eq control. IF I was a real bassist, it might leave something to be desired but, for my purposes, I can’t see needing anything else for a long time (if not forever) until the GAS kicks in anyway. Lol
I am late to the party. I have a question or three. I have mild cerebral palsy and my fingers have trouble flexing, stretching, etc on a 25.5 scale neck. Do you find this shorter scale and slightly narrow nut width helps with playing the guitar?
Hello and welcome! Better late than never! Although I’m by no means qualified to comment on your personal challenges, you have all my respect for continuing your pursuits of happiness. I can tell you in my case, having a broken back severely limits the weight I can support for a given length of time. I play the lightest instrument possible (that I still enjoy and bond with) and that generally means short scale basses. This guitar in particular is easy to play and wasn’t a huge adjustment from a 25.5 scale. The spacing, I would imagine, will facilitate tighter movements between positions for your fingers. I have sausages for fingers so the narrower nut isn’t my preference. I have a Sire U5 short scale bass with a similar issue. If I were of a somewhat slighter build, with normal sized fingers, this guitar could easily become a “go-to” for me. The weight is a HUGE bonus! With a couple mods, it could have a lot of potential. I’m sure someone more qualified than me can add other options that might be beneficial in your situation. I think Fender has some shorter scale, narrower nut models that would be worth exploring. Fwiw, I heard from a few folks after posting this video that said their Mitchell wasn’t fit for firewood. It seems to be more common now despite the price of the instrument. I might have just bought a good one. It’s obviously not a pro level instrument but I bet nobody two stepping at the VFW would notice or care! And, if it’s comfortable, you’re a helluva lot more likely to play it more often! Thanks for being a part of our little corner of the universe and contributing. I’m a simple man myself!
I find that amp a bit noisy, I mean the one I owned had a noticeable and somewhat annoying background hiss. It's ok as a practice amp
On the dirty channel it definitely has an audible hiss but once you’re playing.. The clean channel doesn’t suffer the same unless you’re playing single coils with my dirty electricity! But it does take pedals reasonably well and sounds better than a lot of the other practice amps in the same range. And it’s a loud bulletproof amp to boot!
@@cheapguitarchannel518 yeah they are bulletproof to be fair. My favourite little practice amp is without a shadow of a doubt the Behringer (V-tone gm108). It's just so much fun.
Bummer i hope I get a couple good Barettas. I will be making sure they play well.
I hope so too and think you probably will. I just happened to get one built on a Friday afternoon at quitting time!
Man, a good tune up and you're all good, got one and it's an amazing guitar for the price
It was a lemon.. I've played nothing but good ones before and since and it was just bad. I was sorely disappointed but more in the lack of follow up from Gibson than getting a bad $180 guitar. I always have to work on my Harley Bentons so I'm pretty used to it with budget guitars. I guess I was expecting too much after watching all the (great) reviews, getting my hopes up and waiting and wanting one for so long, it was just disappointing. It's definitely not a knock on them, or wasn't supposed to be, but if I could show some kid that it isn't worth giving up, because we all get a lemon every once in a while, then that's ok with me. Thanks for being here and contributing!
Promo sm 😪
hello sir, which ibanez model is? Thank you.
It is the Ibanez GRG120DX. I think it possibly went by the 122DX as well.
Thank you sir!!!@@cheapguitarchannel518
The strange is why the head is white... in this models is black...@@cheapguitarchannel518
hey man, thanks for the review, i might consider buying this amp, keep it up👍
Thank you! This little amp was quite the surprise! Someone asked how it compared to the Peavey Rage. It’s really apples and oranges and you could buy a roomful of these for the price of the Peavey. Ok, a closet full but still… ;) I have a number of reviews planned but, “Plan” is one tough cookie who seems to continually kick my posterior at every available opportunity. Thanks for being here and sharing your thoughts with our little corner of the universe!
The strings are probably tens (10-42). I recently got a 3/4 Jazzmaster, and decided to put some 11-56 on, which just didn't feel right, so I put some Ernie Slinky tens on. I've definitely had to relearn the amount of pressure required to fret a note, which is AWESOME, because playing a full size guitar after, my fretting is even more precise. It's really taught me to focus on what my fretting fingers are doing, I recommend a 3/4 guitar to anyone who wants to get better on a full fat axe.
You’re probably right, and I play like a gorilla! I can see your point and, although I’d never given it much thought, it makes perfect sense. Anything that makes you better, inspires you to keep playing or puts you in a better space than you were before you picked it up, is always a winner in my book! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience and being part of this little corner of our ever expanding universe!
I would have thought it would make you less precise going back to the full size after playing the short scale alot maybe that your fingers would get spoiled for lack of better words LOL so that's interesting information
I just picked up guitar again after a 10 year hiatus, wife and kids and such. I found this guitar on marketplace with a fender mustang 25 for 150. It looked brand new but after getting it home I realized they had messed with it a bit. It had a back bow and the intonation was way off. Once I got it straightened out it performed way beyond what I was expecting. I’m a metal guy and this guitar has yet to disappoint. Thank you for your awesome video and continue being a badass sir
Thank you for the kindness my friend! It’s a rare commodity these days it seems. I’ve an understanding about life getting in the way but man, it’s sure worth living! Music heals the soul and even my terrible twiddling somehow makes ME feel better! My wife probably feels differently. Thanks for participating in this little space brother!
Thank you for this video. My 12-year-old has an acoustic, he just messes around on it. But he wants lessons this year and we were hunting for an inexpensive beginner electric. We were looking at the Mitchell MS100 but someone mentioned in a video about having to do a few things to it before it was really playable. I don't play so I'd like something that doesn't need a lot of work right away. I was thinking about getting him D'Addario EXL120BT Balanced Tension X-Lite strings so his fingers don't hurt as much at the beginning. What are your thoughts on that? Should we go with different strings?
I wish I could be of more help on the strings. I know a lot of players who swear by Elixir strings but I’ve never been a “string snob” as much as a gauge snob, and that was dependent on the guitar. Going from acoustic to electric is probably going to have his fingers jumping for joy! At least that’s been my experience. Depending on his physical size, for not much more msrp, there are other instruments I would at least look at. I definitely received a lemon but, 99% of the Kramer Baretta specials punch far above their weight and have a cool factor to boot. Plus they’re simple. The Ibanez GRG121 I reviewed some time ago was a pretty stellar “beginner” guitar. I’d have killed to had it when I was 12! If you’re somewhere with a reputable guitar store/shop, (maybe where he might start taking lessons?) let them know your situation and budget and have them help track down a semi-pro used one. There’s lots of sellers and not many buyers at this particular moment so there’s deals to be had. Buuuuuut… you do need to know what you’re looking at or have help from someone who does. It’s awesome you’re supporting a pursuit that sometimes becomes a lifelong love!
Thanks, I'm going to make one, it's a very good idea... Greetings from Argentina
I did it first on my squier pj bass and moved it to the lower bout/horn. It worked but leaned outwards.
$35 at the daily pick today, GC.
I saw that and I'm thinking about buying it before time runs out. There aren't many reviews to look at or people talking about it.
@@Mikex0123 It'll come back, they post the same instruments every few months. I would buy it just for the looks.
@@SalvvOrtiz You are right about the same instruments. I saw it there around 3 or 4 weeks ago. I didn't expect to see it back this soon. They also have what appears to be a decent set of headphones for the sale price of around $30. Anyway I bought the amp. I need one with a headphone jack so this may be good enough. Half price and free shipping.
Totally worth it! I'm not the brightest so, I might have bought two for that price and checked out how they sound in stereo! It's a cool looking little amp too.
@@cheapguitarchannel518 Funny 😀
Just curious, what is the width of the neck pocket?
I wish I could say but it’s since found a new home with a better back!
Very very helpful because I own one of these amps ! ❤
It’s a cool little amp and the cheap speaker upgrade is easy and worth it! It’s a 10/10 in the looks department for me. Thanks for watching!
Makes for a very capable 3/4 traveler sized instrument really.
It would definitely be good for that!
Very cool guitar. I always thought the Charvel teles looked pretty killer. I'm tempted to do a build like this
Sorry it's taken so long to respond but I thought I'd give a quick update. A friend (without back issues) did exactly that! It turned out awesome and he metaled it up real good! I'm just glad he finished my vision.
I got this guitar for traveling. It's funny that you said you like the tuners. Yeah, they're smooth, but I can't get them to hold the tuning at all. Goes out of tune within 10 seconds of playing and that might just be the fatal flaw for me. I'm going to have to find some replacement tuners or I just can't play it.
Man, I hate to hear that. I wasn’t expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. I’ve heard from others that have the same issues. Nut issues seem to be pretty prevalent as well. I’ll assume mine was built on a Wednesday. We bought one for my nephew for Christmas and his tuners aren’t nearly as smooth but it does hold tuning (as reasonably as can be expected for a five year old) pretty well.
Does the tag inside the case on the storage compartment say Epiphone??
It does.
Just bought this loving it so far
I find myself playing it FAR more than I ever thought I would! It’s become my “reach for” guitar more and more. The more I play it, the more I like it!
@@cheapguitarchannel518 thanks for your content, really appreciate it
Excellent video 👍
Thanks Tracaqsl! Between the construction and holidays I’ve not been able to do any reviews for a while but, I do have more planned and thank you for your kind words!
I am going to get this guitar for my 9 years old
I’m getting one for my 6yr old nephew for Christmas. hopefully he treats it better than his other toys but, if not, at least I didn’t have to win the lottery to buy it! I think it’s a good choice my friend!
Do you think this one is better than the one that I have? It's like a beginner guitar and it's called Lyxpro electric guitar?
I’m not sure about the Lyxpro guitars. I’ve seen them online and they look nice but, I’ve never played one so I really don’t have an educated opinion. I like the Mitchell enough to buy my nephew one for this Christmas and think it will serve him well for years to come (he could tear up a crowbar) if he takes care of it. It was good enough for Dolly to play one at the Rock hall induction ceremony and I think it’s safe to say she can play whatever she wants (for free more than likely), especially with those nails!! lol In all seriousness, I like this little axe a lot more than I probably should and play it much more than I ever thought I would!
@@cheapguitarchannel518 oo okey thanks :>
Im just starting elec gitaurs is this one good for beginners?
I would have been a much better player now if I’d had a guitar this nice when I started. Which was shortly after my first pterodactyl hunt!
