Sorry to ask,befor you do the pounding is the fabric need to be wash first?
Yes, remove any 'treatment' or surface that may have been placed on the fabric in the manufacturing process, as it will resist the natural dye. Wash your fabric and dont't condition it, dry, then off you go.

For some reason I'm having an issue making the corners meet in front of the frame 😩 What is happening?
Except pinecones catch fire easy.
If you're worried about fire use battery-operated candles or votives.
I collected a ton of pine cones a few years ago, cleaned and heated them in the oven and they are ready to be used even though I didn't know what to do with them! I just loved the woodsy feel and this is a totally easy and doable craft display! Thank you for your creativity because I have none of my own!

No. It will fade a bit after the first wash, but it'll stay permanent
