When it comes to Jacob Collier, people are either in the - love him crowd, or the - he is a great musician but I don’t know why he has so much in his music because it makes it boring soulless and emotionless like he is just showing off crowd. It reminds me of the what color dress (blue or gold) internet phenomenon of a few years ago. You see one or the other and that’s OK. I just feel blessed that I am in the group that finds his concerts joyous, emotional, and filled with some of the most musically inspiring moments that I have experienced in my concert adventures.
Perhaps it’s my history as a choral director but having the audience imitate his microtone melodies, not to mention having those same 4000 people become a choir that sounds that wonderful, is inspiring. Hearing that sound fills my soul and overwhelmingly reminds me why I did it for many years. I’ve been at many concert sing alongs that burn your ears, this is not normal at a Jacob concert. I’ve also done those types of warm ups too in a choral rehearsal setting but not even close to that level of sound or emotion or with that many singers. It’s like a preview of heaven.
