Happy Corner Vernal Pond - Western Chorus Frogs in full breeding chorus March 8 2016
Переглядів 1904 місяці тому
Western chorus frogs in full breeding chorus! This small swampy area at the corner of a field may not look important at first glance, but it is actually a vernal pool, a temporary spring pond that is vital to the life cycles of amphibians such as the chorus frog. The area where the pool is located is actually part of a mitigation project - this winter invasive honeysuckle and other brush was cl...

American toads, spring peepers, and one western chorus frog calling from “Tiger” pond
Переглядів 1024 місяці тому
After a dry spring heavy rains brought out the amphibians in full force! American toads are calling from the water, while spring peepers are calling from the grass at the edge of the pond - they’ll likely head to the water after dark. Can you hear the lone western chorus frog call? His call is a rising raspy creak, rather than the more bell-like calls of the peepers. Tiger pond got its name fro...

Переглядів 684 місяці тому
It’s been a dry spring, and a few days ago this vernal pond was completely dry. After drenching rains the last few days, the western chorus frogs didn’t waste any time! At close range the volume of their calls is painfully loud. Can you spot the tiny frog calling from the water when the video zooms in?

After a dry spring we had 2 inches of rain in two days, and with the warm temperatures we had our first toads of the year calling from the Earth Discovery Center Pond. Temperatures are falling to near-freezing tomorrow, so the toads will stop calling soon, but as soon as temperatures warm again they’ll be back!

Garter snake eating a worm
Переглядів 7 тис.12 років тому
Garter snakes will eat earthworms, slugs, minnows, small frogs, and small mice and voles. This particular garter snake came to the Earth Discovery Center in 2010, and usually eats around eight earthworms a week. We take her out of her enclosure for feeding to make sure she doesn't accidentally swallow wood shavings along with the worms.

Is this a common garter snake, i have a baby, but it won't eat and i don't want it to musk me if i force make it to eat, i tried a small cricket and a mid (small worm) but it won't eat those.

I have a baby also, it would not eat for at least a week when we first put it in the enclosure. But I found small worms and it's eaten 3 so far. I also read that they're not insectivores.

Most worms are fine, just not red wiggler worms. The best are european or canadian nightcrawlers. Edit: Red wigglers are the worms found wild in the US.

I'd been wondering what might a Garder snake be doing in my yard. This sheds light on the question very graphically. Kudos!! I'd caught one near my porch where someone keeps raiding a Robins nest before the eggs can hatch. My suspicions are landing on the snake after watching another video of a Garder taking a small bird that by all appearances would have been too big to swallow. UPDATE: A young squirell living in neigbors attic space was seen near the nest just now. He/ she's moved to the top of the list of likely suspects.

Cal Munson Gartner snakes don’t usually go after eggs unless there is little food around. The easier the food the better it is; and why would it risk a fight with a mother while it has endless of ‘easy-to-go-down’ worms? My garter snake loves worms; but only eats mice when worms aren’t available; also prefers fish to mice Seems they just like food that goes down easier

My garters are personally always hungry, they eat 4 fish and fuzzy mouse every week, occasionally feed night crawlers, so they’re getting a nice full and healthy diet if you’re snake isn’t eating, then try dipping you’re in mice chicken broth, when my baby garters won’t take a first meal I soak the guppies in beef or chicken broth, or take the tail of an adult mouse and scent it with toad and they’ll take it right then.
