Jeff Sharlet on 'Sanewashing' and Fascism
Nonfiction writer Jeff Sharlet joins co-hosts V.V. Ganeshananthan and Whitney Terrell to discuss how mainstream media outlets sanitize Donald Trump’s rhetoric in their reporting rather than straightforwardly describing his words and behavior, an approach recently dubbed “sanewashing” by The New Republic’s Parker Molloy. Sharlet analyzes the term’s usefulness and also its limitations; talks about the need to describe fascism using the word itself; and reflects on who is now at the center of political discourse and who is at the fringe. He also considers whether popular new media influencers like the MeidasTouch Network and UA-camr Brian Tyler Cohen are really filling the need to describe Trump as he is. He reads from his book, The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War.

Meidas Touch focuses on LEGAL issues - that is their niche - and they do a great job explaining every day‘s courtroom twists and turns to a non-lawyer audience.

The brothers also do a lot of reporting out the MAGA-sphere. Ben almost lives inside Trumps social feed and fundraising emails at this point. There are a lot of specialized legal shows on MTN but their flagships are no longer focused on legal matters alone, as I see it.

Fascism always starts with being anti-liberalism and anti-left (read: anti-democracy and anti-social justice) nourished by a weird conman who can fool enough low-informed simpletons to create a violent cult believing whatever Fuhrer says as a dictator

Midas Touch and the rest of the twenty-four-seven Trump haters are consumed by Trump and their hatred of him. It is unhealthy for them or those who feed on that hate. Trump has consumed their minds and their souls. Sharlet is right they are elites thinking everyone needs to participate in their hate by listening to them spew their vitriol. He is also right in that life is more than hating Trump. Politics is more than hating Trump. There are health care concerns, there is a living wage, there is Issue One, and all manner of local issues that vie for attention. Pure red-hot hate is not good for anyone's mind or soul.

Why didn’t you investigate as to whether people were having their pets eaten before you accused Trump of lying. I have personally Witnessed foreigners eating pets since 1960. So you’re the one spreading lies and representing fake news.

So you all believe that Biden, who spent most of his time holed up somewhere prior to the elections and barely got any supporters out to his few and painfully, empty rallies, garnered more votes than Obama? Okay..

Kawai. Thank you! Grew up in Honolulu. My Dad was a Kaua’i boy - born and raised. Asian American. Now Live in Brooklyn. My daughter who is obsessed with and loves sharks read your novel without sleeping last week and insists I read your novel this week non negotiable. My goal today imposed by my daughter was to read the first 3 chapters or she will have “nothing to do with me.” Thats a tough mandate. So I read the first 3 chapters aloud as the genesis of Hawaiian Mythology is the Oral Tradition of Storytelling ( all mythologies actually) and for me it takes a differently dimension orally. It works both ways beautifully. ( my daughter grew up reading books aloud and still does.). Wanted to get work done this afternoon. Instead will read the next 3 chapters. Hopefully you will be reading In Brooklyn. We look forward to that.
