Why I'm NOT Renewing My RUNNA subscription after a Year!
After 12 months using the running training app RUNNA I've decided not to renew my subscription. In this video I'll explain why.

--------------------------------------------
Over the last 12 months I have been using the RUNNA app. I've ran 2 marathons following 16 week training plans and I've set new personal bests across the majority of distances. But when my renewal came up I decided not to renew in 2025.
I could have just continued with RUNNA and I'm sure I would have another great year of running, but there are a few things that stopped me and in this video I will tell you why.
This video is a long term review of RUNNA, and I let you know the positives (there are a lot) and negatives I have found using the app.
I'll also tell you my updated plans for 2025 and the training plans I am planning on using to help me reach my goals.

Chasing Sub 20 5k AGAIN! Benchmark run before starting RUNNA training plan

Before the end of 2024 I am hoping to finally break the 20 minute barrier across a 5k running distance. In 2023, I missed out by 12 seconds where I used Garmin Training Widget to train me over 5 weeks for my attempt. This year I am using the RUNNA app which I have used for both my marathons training plans in 2024 and across the way I have got new personal bests in 10k, Half Marathon and Maratho...

    Hi Stephen, watched this as you suggested. I use this the same way as you did and my suggested paces are very similar to yours although at 65 I just want to get to just under 21 minutes to give me a 80% age grade! Also I have had it change my runs from day to day although this is usually if I have gone too fast or further on the previous days suggestion!! As you said I also struggle with the recovery paces and I try and run with my Wife as she has a relatively hard for her pace of around 7:15 per K, if that is not an option as her runs do not often coincide with my recovery days I also will have a rest day instead. Hopefully see you again at Rutland Water when you have hit 5,000 subscribers!!!!

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ 9 годин тому

      Yes slow paces I still find hard but I’m getting better at it. I’ll be back at Rutland WELL before I hit 5k. Hopefully in the not too distant future.

    Good video. I enjoy a personal, in-depth review where it’s clear a lot of careful deliberation has been made and is laid out with a good structure. Makes it reliable. I recognise many of your concerns with Runna but I am still going with it for my second marathon (second half of my subscription) after being impressed with the pace and scale of their development since I first got it. In other words, I’m hoping they do add or refine many of the points you make here, though I can see myself at a similar inflection point if not, so hopefully will be able to call upon your recommendations for alternatives! So, yes, excited to hear how others compare. Tailored plans and Coopah are great choices being the next big players. Have you ever tried Kiprun Pacer? Probably the best free app I’ve used outside of taking the time to craft something myself on chatGPT as you’ve also done. Maybe something to look at for Valencia or something in between your 5K and Amsterdam plans.

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ 11 годин тому

      Thanks Aaron. Appreciate the comments about the structure. Bit of a different style of video from my usual types so I spent a bit of time on trying to structure it in what felt like a logical way so I’m glad that came across. I haven’t heard of Kiprun Pacer but will definitely check it out and see if I can apply it to any training this year. I think Runna will serve you well for your second marathon. I don’t think it’s ‘bad’ far from it, I just want to see how the competition compares.

  • @jb4932
    @jb4932 13 годин тому

    I too am signed with RUNNA and although I love having a structured plan I too find its targets over ambitious and I feel I’m always failing. Also it doesn’t take into account things like age ( I’m 67 this month and this presents its own issues following a rigid plan) I think it would be improved by incorporating cross training options that you could substitute on days when the aches and pains suggest running isn’t the best option. I also think a winner for RUNNA would be if they specifically offer a parkrun plan - they could even refine it for actual venues as the data is out there. Anyway - I enjoy the content and look forward to seeing how the alternatives stack up. Good Arrows! 🎯

      @RunSDJ 12 годин тому

      Thank you. Good ideas you’ve suggested there. Just as I finished shooting this video RUNNA announced a partnership with Parkrun so I wouldn’t be surprised if they offer a Parkrun plan very soon, though probably not course specific. Interesting you mention the impact of age, I wonder if RUNNA have considered that, be interesting to know. Thanks for the compliment about my content. Makes it all worthwhile.

  • @AWright300

    The Coopah app certainly seems to be gaining traction and will be interesting to see how you compare and rate it to Runna I am still using Runna from your recommendations 12 months ago and really enjoy it. It gives me a good structure and I have become comfortable with the watch interface/features but it is certainly ambitious at times

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ 12 годин тому

      Yes it does! I spoke to the Coopah and Runna teams at last years running show and I’d already began my subscription to Runna, but I’ve been keeping my eye on Coopah ever since. I still wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Runna, as I said in the video it transformed me as a runner, and I stand by that. Just a few areas of irritation so figured I’d try out some other things and see how they compare.

  • @tonyuk928

    Just wondered if you had used the free standard features of the Garmin app to enter your races and predicted times to give you daily suggestions for training.

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ 12 годин тому

      Yes! I did that after Gothenburg for 5 weeks. I probably should have mentioned it. I did a couple of videos calling ‘Chasing Sub 20’ about it that still do good views. Some of my most popular videos. Recommend checking them out. The thing I didn’t like, but can see the logic behind is that you can go to bed thinking you have one type of run planned the next day and mentally prepare for it (nutrition, hydration, routes etc) and then you wake up and the plan has completely changed. I didn’t like that.

      Thanks! Time will tell. I hope it does last as I’ve enjoyed it so far. It hasn’t felt too soft for me, but I’ve been using it in pretty cold temperatures so perhaps that’s why it’s felt a bit firmer as EVA foam changes a lot based on temperature.

    Great review. I feel the same way about the Mizuno Neo Vista. I was disappointed given the number of positive reviews out there and the high price tag. Thankfully, I got them on a reasonable discount. Still I'm not pleased about its limited use case (at least for me). I just bought a pair of Novablast 5 and will run in them tomorrow. I've really enjoyed running in the Novablast 4. Probably my favourite daily trainer at present.

      I positively reviewed them myself and got a new 10k PB in them earlier this year, but over the longer term they have a couple of critical issues which has meant they just really my go-to for anything currently. If you got on with the NB4, I think you’ll really like the 5s.

    This course no longer uses the muddy grass section - other than that small hill at @5:26 it is all on the paths. The hardest part is walking up the steep hill back to the car park after you've finished!

    • @RunSDJ

    It took me some time to learn how Runna integrates with my Garmin Connect/FR 945. I feel like their wasn't much documentation on how to correctly do RUNNA's activities on the watch. But after some time (and many mistakes), I've got the hang of things. I enjoy Runna and always look forward to my workouts.

      Unfortunately the main issue for me over the long term with the Neo Vista since this review is just how insecure the shoe is because of the material of the upper. I've very nearly rolled over on them more times than I would like and the feeling that you have to slow going into a corner just to remain stable in the shoe feels a bit counter intuitive to me.

    Hello, I recently got FR965 watch and this has helped me. I was looking how to do cutom profile and i came across this copy activity option. I see you mentioned the same and your idea of having 1K/1mile for smaller races and 5K/3Mi for longer races is good idea. Quick question, I dont see the option of quick training in my watch though. is this due to watch or firmware you think? I think PacePro does something similar to help you reach the Pace target for the race. Do you think the inclusion of PacePro made this Quick Training option redundant and they removed it?

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ Місяць тому

      These screenshots are based on the Epix Gen 2 Pro, but I did Chicago w a 965 and I’m pretty sure it was Pace Pro that I used for that. Slightly different interfaces but pace pro will definitely help you achieve the same result as Quick Training.

      Thanks Dave! Got something coming up that might take priority over the sub 20, but also thinking I might be able to do both alongside each other. Gonna recover, do a hard effort 5k on a flat course to see where I am at, and we’ll take it from there.

    Curious if your Runna training block paid off in Chicago. Actually I just checked, just about the same time as in Paris I see. Anyway well done! Ik was wondering if doing a 5k in 25 minutes the day before is a little to much effort? Ik did a parkrun before my marathon last week, as a shake out run, I did that parkrun in 29 minutes, keeping it really easy, more easy than my marathon pace of 5:15 per km. I use Runna to get a new 5k pb in 8 weeks, will try it to get a new marothon pb next spring. Interesting to see your journey, thanks for vlogging!

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ 2 місяці тому

      Yeah 25min 5k was possibly a bit rich but I honestly don’t think it had any real impact on the marathon time. I just think that’s where I am at currently. Might try a different training plan for my next marathon with a different style of training, but I do enjoy Runna and the variety of runs it has me do each week. It’s just questionable based on feedback if that is the ‘right’ thing to be doing training for a marathon.

    As I have just started Runna I'm very curious to see if you have seen massive improvement, as was promised 16 week ago. Apparently Runna promised a bit too much.

    • @RunSDJ
      @RunSDJ 2 місяці тому

      I saw a massive improvement from marathon 1 (Gothenburg) to marathon 2 (Paris) but my training for Gothenburg was short (7 weeks) and experimental (using Chat GPT). Paris was full 16 weeks (as was Chicago) and I took a massive leap forward in Paris compared to Gothenburg of about 30 mins. However Runna did estimate too much and said I’d knock about an hour off my first marathon time, which I still didn’t get anywhere near in my third marathon in Chicago last week.

    Thank you for this video and the others in the series. I have been watching them, as I am considering the Runna App. From what I have seen so far, I must say I am not impressed. First, given your previous experience, I am unsure how any algorithm can credibly suggest that you can run a 3:30 Marathon. This is a long shot at best and I don’t think there are many people that could achieve this goal in just 18 weeks. Second, the sessions you are describing, both intervals and tempo runs are run way too fast even for the 3:30 target pace. I cannot see any benefit of running at a sub 4 min km during a training block. This does not sound like marathon specific training at all. I have just completed the Munich marathon in 3:58 and that was quite comfortable; I could have run faster. I didn’t know what to expect, as I hadn’t run a marathon in 14 years. Therefore I was quite conservative. At no point did I ran faster than 5:10 km in any run during the training block. My weekly milage is around 55k. and has been for a year prior to that race and I wasn’t running at all about 15 months before the race. The vast majority of my running was done at a pace of 6:30km. Only the last 6 weeks before the taper I started running part of my longer runs at marathon pace or <>10%. My question to is: do you feel that these fast runs actually made a difference to the specific race you were preparing for? I am sure these runs will greatly increase your 5k PB but they don’t sound marathon specific. I fear that if I start running these kind of paces regularly, injury would be certain since I am 58 now. If this is what the Runna App delivers, I think I would probably be better off getting a different plan. I do love the integration with Garmin, though. Thanks again for sharing your experience.

      Thanks Christian, I have now completed my second marathon using Runna as my training plan. On the second and most recent plan (for Chicago, completed last weekend) it once again suggested I had the potential to run about a 3:25-3:40 marathon. This time however, given my experience I set myself a more cautious goal of 3:45 ignoring the overall 'goal' set by Runna. I did in fact do a 3:56, just over 1 minute quicker than Paris. This time I didn't let myself be disappointed as it was still a personal best, but it was still WAY longer than what Runna estimated. Overall despite the goals feeling a bit lofty, I like Runna. Coming from a background of having no real consistency or plan in my training, I must say I really like the plans and the accountability I now feel (to myself) to do the various sessions. I really don't struggle with the paces in the tempo & interval sessions, but the question of if that is the 'right' kind of training for a marathon, I don't really know. Having had a couple of conversations, including one with a running coach at the airport in Chicago, they made a point similar to yours above about the easy paced runs and I should focus more on these, which is a weak point for me. Even my easy runs, I struggle with getting my pace much below 5:30/km. But this is a learning for me and something I will be trying to improve on in my next plan. Any plan I do though will have to integrate with Garmin as well as Runna does though. I did my first marathon plan for Gothenburg using ChatGPT and manually entering all my workouts into Garmin Connect (there is a video on my channel for that too if interested). I definitely don't want to go back to manual input! It was rather soul destroying. There are a couple of alternatives on the market now I might consider trying including Coopah (they sponsor the London Marathon) and Humango which I know less about. My annual plan with Runna comes up for renewal in December so I will be strongly thinking about the alternatives.

      @@RunSDJ Thanks for your detailed response. I don’t think I‘ll bother with Runna, which is a shame because I had high hopes. I am all for stretch goals but the paces your plan made you run are way off imo. How can an easy pace be the same as Marathon race pace? And race pace for a very lofty goal time at that. Some elite runners have an easy pace not far below the 5 min mark. Easy should be zone 2. Does Runna take into consideration your max heart rate? If it was a free App, I might give it a try but my expectation for the price that they are charging would be that the app takes all available data into account when designing a training plan. It sounds like they’ll make you happy when you sign up by giving you a great prediction but can’t deliver on it. Great result in Chicago. A PB is a PB! Well done. 👏

      I find they do ease up quite a lot. I’ve got a new second pair and the difference between a broken in pair and a new pair with regards to how much the material ‘gives’ is stark! New pair feels quite small, so I stuck to my broken in pair for the Chicago Marathon and had no issues with crampt toe box.

    The park has a Modern visitors centre and a big cafe... its a short walk from the finish onto the other side of the park. The Rugby club is closer so more handy for the start line toilets, but there is definitely toilets and a cafe, cafe does everything plus icecream, worth a visit. would recomend the thick toast they do. The Park is world famous as it was the worlds first public park, which Central park in New york was modelled on. It was also the park where Irvine and Mallory lived during their Everest expeditions . The visitors centre provide some interesting history with a room dedicated to it with pictures etc.
