2024 Garden Prep
Tad behind but I'm catching up! Today was garden prep day. Weed each row and path, top dress from the compost pile. Lay cardboard in the path, cover with LOTS of bark - roughly 6" of bark.
Plants are already growing in the greenhouse. I'll plant some more cool weather crops, kale, swiss chard etc.
How is your garden prep going? What do you do to enrich the soil?

Wicking Bucket Tutorial
Переглядів 217 місяців тому
Today, I'm going to put together a wicking bucket using peat moss to ensure help with wicking and to help plants stay perfectly hydrated. First thing first, I need to make the soil mix that will fill the top two-thirds of the bucket. This mix is crucial because it’s what the plants will grow in, and I want to make sure it’s nutrient-rich and well-draining. Here's the recipe for our soil mix: 1....

Pellew Creek

One of my concerns about the proposed Asphalt and Gravel mine in Arlee (2022) is Pellew Creek. The actual plant and storage area is over Pellew Creek. Pellew Creek starts in the mountains, goes underground, comes up and is renamed Spring Creek. Spring Creek then dumps into the Jocko River. ANY contamination will be felt throughout the Jocko Valley. The Montana Department of Environmental Qualit...
How we store harvested onions

I have been asked how we store our onions. We loop a piece of baling twine and layer the onions through and around the loop. This was a rough garden year and our onions just did not grow. It was to cold and wet followed by extreme heat.

Flower Garden Update June 2022

A cool wet spring definitely slowed down the garden. The first of the peonies have bloomed. The second variety is just starting. If you are interested in the peony "The Red Memorial Day peony is the oldest red peony type available. It's been around some 450 years. The plant is an heirloom peony and produces double flowers that are bright crimson. Their fragrance includes a cinnamon undertone." ...

2022 Final Garden Prep
Переглядів 602 роки тому
We'll look at last year's garden, then a quick trip through how I prepped the garden for this year. The chickens had free range through the garden all winter. We added some of the chicken manure from their coop through the winter. Using the tractor as a broad fork I loosened the soil with the Kubota tractor. The chickens leveled it out. 30" beds, 20" walk ways between the beds.

Our Homestead

Welcome to our little part of the world. Here is an overview of our 10 ac homestead.
Looks like the greenhouse held up well!
Just came across your video, and am planning a similar setup! I'll be using heavy duty pallets, that I've halved lengthwise, for the bottom/sides.
Thanks Roxane! I had a customer gift me a huge bag of pods yesterday, and I can’t wait to germinate some!!
I gather my seeds mid September when the pods split open. I tried once harvesting them early. The seeds were not viable. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
I also read that it can take 3 to 5 and sometimes 10 years before they grow flowers
I have near heard or experienced more than 4 so far. But it's not like I'm sitting around waiting for them, I do have a life... lol. Plus we have 10 ac so I have lots of room to plant more while I wait.
Where do you sell these Peony starts at ? Will you add a link so I can buy some and what is the best bag of soil to pot these starts in ? Thanks
They are all gone. We'll see if I start enough to sell this fall.
Where can you get the seed ?
I gather seeds from my peonies. I do not sell mine.
When i put the seeds in the paperbag with moisty paper they all get attacked with mold within days. What am I doing wrong?
I would say too wet if you're getting mold.
I’d say using a paper bag was where you went wrong, plastic is safer
Always plant tail down❤
I’ve had mine in a bag since last September. It’s now march and they’re not sprouting. They’re hard as rocks. I tried putting some in the fridge for about 2 months and pulled them out and they’re not doing anything either. Any ideas?

Did you put anything in there to add moisture? I put a paper towel in the bags with mine. You may have to start again. If you decide to start again, put the current seeds out in a flower bed - just cover lightly with dirt. And who knows? Maybe you'll get some growth. I have had seeds come up 2 years after I gave up on them.
Hello Do you grow any peonies see this year may I buy some from you?
I put the seeds in the ground and they grow.
Not as much fun and harder to track. But doable
What is the panel solar used for?
😮
¿Hay que esperar a que caigan las semillas o se pueden recoger cuando se abra un poco la vaina? Gracias por el vídeo.
As soon as my pods start to crack I cut the stem and take the pod inside to dry and collect seeds once pod dries out.
Best work
Thank you. We use it every summer
Can peonies thrive in the tropics?
They need cold weather. So no, they cannot thrive in the tropics
Exciting! 😊😊❤
Any updates? Thank you for sharing! Does anyone know where to purchase viable seeds? Thank you ❤ I hope your peonies bloom abundantly ❤️
I had a rough winter and my seeds did not make it. It was 100% my fault, but what is - is. So I'll try again next fall. I do not know where to find viable seeds this time of year. I am looking forward to seeing how many of my peonies come up that I planted last spring. It is still to early here to see them. We had 4" of fresh snow this morning! :)
My peonies are going to bloom this year! Not all of them - about 10. But many look great, just no blooms yet.
And u put the baggies under the light
I’m so stupid I collected the pods still green. They’re still closed. I think I screwed up, didn’t I? 🥺🥺
Live and learn. I did that the first year too. I'd put the seeds in water and keep the ones that sink. Maybe you'll get lucky.
4pm 4-16-2024 I put my seeds in a baggie, in the fridge. Took them out today. All I see is little fine black root like things. I'm not sure they are even roots. Now what do I do?
@@karenbrown6914 After harvesting the seeds you want to put them in the baggie with some moisture in a warm room until you get roots up to an inch long, then they go in the fridge for 3 months of "winter" or until you see a leaf sprout. So I'd put them in the warmth now, in baggie, and watch for white roots to start.
Cảnh này quá đẹp. Chúc mừng bạn đã chia sẻ 🥰👌
Cảm ơn bạn. Tôi ước tôi đã có mùa phát triển của bạn.
How your peony now?
I've followed you're method, seeds have been in a bag with wet paper towel for about 5 months now, still no roots. Should I keep waiting or keep them in a cooler place? Room they are kept is south facing so temperatures do go up and down.
Interesting. I would guess they are not going to start. I'd put them outside in a space and let them try there. A mentor said she had seeds come up years later. So not all hope is lost. As for the cooler office. My seeds were in the office that gets cooler at night. Did you put the seeds in water to make sure they were viable before starting? I did not the first year. The second year I did and it sure helped.
You want room temperature, not cooler. You could try seed scarification. When I could not get seeds to sprout roots I rubbed them on my chainsaw file making a spot where moisture could more easily penetrate. I then placed them back in baggie and soon I saw roots.
Try putting your seeds in a bag of soil, not too wet, not too dry and let them sprout in a Ziploc bag with soil.
I love peonies
Me too, and the show has just begun. I usually pick flowers for the house, but now I want the seeds!
Hi roxane.. this is sheriff from india.. instead of making a wooden drying chamber you can use non working refrigrator or a deep freezer. It will be more effective and air tight.. just my opinion.
It would probably be more air tight but not as easy to work with or to move. Plus I do not like the look of an old refrigerator or deep freezer. If you decide to build one I would love to see photos of it.
Planning to bult for coconet drying. Surly ill share the pics
Looks great super job.
Thanks!
Hi, I enjoyed you video and will be watching your other videos as well. I live north west of Kalispell, is your garden in the nw part of Montana? Thanks for the idea of using tractor as a broad fork.
Thank you for the compliment, and your welcome! I was thinking of making a broad fork and then thought about the tractor. :) I'm just above Missoula - in Arlee.
This is a great and very informative video! Love her website, too!
Also Montana following you for all the cold weather tips!!!!!!! I need to figure out my zone!!!

Really like your design. Thanks.
I just applied my peony seeds with your method. I think it sprouts in a shorter time with this method. Should we keep the seeds in a dark environment?
Congrads! I have not kept mine in a dark environment. They are in my greenhouse where I add supplemental light. I do make sure they get the next winter. So far this has worked.

@@vinraj927 they have to have a cold period every year.
how long does it typically take to dehydrate different foods?
It depends on weather and what I am drying. Right now we are in the 80's during the day, humidity is high because we had a thunderstorm and rain last night. We do not usually have much humidity in Montana. Currently, I have Thyme, oregano and cabbage dehydrating. I will give them a few days and check. Three days max. When it's really dry a day to day and a half for herbs. Did my answer help?
@@roxanerinard4883 Thanks for the info, and yes very helpful:). I am in the planning process of building a hopefully more efficient one (DIY) that can dehydrate in 10hrs on a nice day (figures crossed).
@@jhavardjonas2166 if I had to do it again, I would make the solar heater longer. That would increase the temperature.
@@jhavardjonas2166 have you built it?
@@doitandmakemoney7039 Hi ... no not yet, I currently use dehydrators, as I commercially make and sell dried seasonings and herbs. For food safety and shelf Life, I have to ensure they are properly dried.
Did you dehydrate much this season?
Tim Burrows we dehydrated lots of garden produce. Our favorite is dried cherry tomatoes. The grandchildren devoured the raspberry fruit leather. Do you have a dehydrator?
I am collecting parts....I have a dream of making an extremely large solar dryer based on a hoop house as solar collector, old fridge drying chamber and tall solar chimney.....Like to see what's working for other people.
