I like food analogies and I think the term content is synonymous with calories. We consume calories for energy in the same way we consume content for entertainment. Calories and content make us feel good. With the advent of smart phones and social media, it’s easy to make fast food content that is tasty (McDonald’s) and rewarding but completely forgettable. Artists, studios and UA-camrs / tiktokers make content but it’s up to the consumer to dictate whether they want to consume fast food or a meal at a restaurant. Sometimes, it’s just easier to go to McDonald’s😊 Anywhooo, great episode Joel and team RevThink 😁
Joel, this is legit. Loved hearing the nerdy economic stuff. I wish there was a way to measure or analyze how this year measured against smaller studios and individual freelancers doing direct to client work. I imagine a similar trend BUT I have a hunch clients may seek out smaller firms in 2024.
Great to hear someone is benchmarking our niche industry - thank you for sharing the data here 👍

I had a feeling an emergency episode would be called for! Thought the title would be: “Meet the New Boss… Same as the Old Boss”
We’ll miss you, Connor!
Nice one
Congratulations on making it to 100 episodes! 🥳
One of the most wonderful men I've had the privilege to Have known. Although it's been near 18 years I remember what a lovely person you were/are and I'm glad to have known you.
Love to hear Dallas. Thanks for providing the interview!
Thinking about it and I came to the conclusion that Spielberg’s last movie with a major cultural impact was Saving Private Ryan in 1998. He’s made some great movies since (Minority Report, Lincoln), some interesting departures from his normal tone (A.I., The Terminal, Munich), some very safe, middle-of-the-road fare (War Horse, Bridge of Spies, The Post), a few kid movies probably just to play with new technology (Tintin, The BFG, Ready Player One), but nothing that has absolutely dominated the cultural conversation. Then again, very few movies dominate the cultural conversation like they used to…
He's continued to have hits, but not the sort of mega hits that made him something special. He's a solid filmmaker and I can't deny that. But whatever magic, whatever mystique he used to have, just isn't there anymore. We are firmly in a post-Spielberg, post-Lucas age. What's yet to be seen is if we're in a post-Cameron age when Avatar 2 hits the big screen later this year. These big names, Spielberg, Lucas, Cameron, are all associated in the mind of Gen Xers as filmmakers who put butts in seats. They sold a lot of popcorn and soda.
@@angusorvid8840 Never bet against Cameron. I used to be one of those people who said that no one will care about Avatar 2 but the constant delays seem to have helped it.
I think the problem with West Side Story is...who wanted this thing? Was there an audience out there that was jonesing for WSS? Spielberg isn't relevent any more, the Boomers day is passed and they just haven't awakened to it yet. Hollywood's problem is there are no more independent moguls. It's become Wall Street driven corporatists watching out for the quarterly earnings report. Playing it safe doesn't get you fired.
I think there is a ceiling to the superhero comic book driven Marvel/DC stories. There really isn't much more to say so it all becomes CGI and special effects...which is pretty thin gruel to make people care to go to a theater or spend extra for PVOD. We need NEW stories, NEW worlds, NEW characters, NEW narrative traditions to mine.
So interesting guys, It's very true about the situation surrounding the removal of the Paramount Decrees. I'm actually writing a thesis on this so It would be great to speak to you more about this.. :)
NBC should be The Turkey Network. Even SNL is lousy.
BTW, excellent discussion. I've thought about this. I'm a Gen Xer who's been working in the industry on the writing end on and off since the 80s, on scripts and for stand-up comics, and I've noticed things going in this direction for some time. I got to know a lot of tech elites over the last decade and I've noticed the technocritization of Hollywood. I would say it was a post-boomer town for sometime now. We just see the last hanger's on, the Bob Igers, Spielbergs, Lucases and Zemeckisis in the twilight of their career. Silicon Beach is attached at the hip to Hollywood. It's all cross-pollination. But Hollywood needs Big Tech more than Big Tech needs Hollywood. Big Tech will determine what entertainment is and how it will be delivered and experienced in the coming years. Big Tech is almost thoroughly millennial, and my fellow GenXers in Hollywood are caught in the middle. It's a front row seat to a real sea change.
Gen Xers have been caught behind Boomers their entire career. Mostly, it's been easy sailing with a tidal break in front of them, but now that the boomers are moving on so is their form of entertainment (blockbusters) as a dominant force. Hollywood is moving forward, Gen -X'ers have the hands-on experience while Millenials have the tech value. This new partnership will introduce trends that will last the next 50 years. Let's not lament the passing and miss the biggest influential opportunities of our careers.
I've read Richard's memoir of Hampshire College, Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost. One of the best, and funniest memoirs I've ever read. Great book.
Well I liked it.
11:50 Great analogy between AE and systems and routines!
