Complete production season at the West Virginia Distilling Co. Making Mountain Moonshine, the entire process. It's a little long at 2.5 hours so skip around to the parts that interest you. I used the data I gathered to write a Manual available on Amazon called: Distillery Operations: How to Run a Small Distillery. The video covers all the processes I went through to make my products from Cookin...

    Hi I have just ordered your book from Amazon but one thing im unsure of. At the end of the double run you say you add 500 Gallons of 100 Proof whiskey the still, do you dilute it with water so as it reduced the proof and the still don't run dry/? excuse my ignorance but im new to this. Paul

    • @MoonshineDistilling
      @MoonshineDistilling 3 роки тому

      There is no reason to dilute the charge in the still with water. The higher the proof one starts with the higher the proof one will obtain with a simple pot still like mine. I had more than 500 gallons of single run but that was as much as my still would hold. I save the rest of the next run. Also, one has to allow for the expansion of the alcohol as it warms up. One can’t fill it to the rim because it will actually expand and climb up the column rather than have the larger surface area of the still diameter for vapor to be driven off of. Lastly, there’s no reason to heat more water than necessary. Catch you later. Payton.

      You have to catch them with the paddle and squish them against the side of the still to break them up. It's hot work with the steam coming off.

    you mentioned a list of acids, sulphuric being one of them, then you say don"t use battery acid but battery acid is sulphuric or did you mean dont use acid from a battery? I can see its an old post, but if you are monitoring.

    • @MoonshineDistilling
      @MoonshineDistilling 4 роки тому

      Car battery acid (from Auto Parts stores) is formulated with other chemicals that are good for batteries and bad for mash. I don't have a list of the components but once I learned that it was not pure sulphuric acid I quit using it. Phosphoric acid or just plain vinegar or lemon juice will work.

    @robertbeliveau1692 5 років тому

    When you are having to come every 2 or 3 minutes to fill and refill the water level in you secondary cooler ...... you mentioned building a much larger reservoir. Instead of having to keep an eye on the water level that often....... couldn’t you , with the garden hose diameter, use a “ toilet tank float ball , shut off “ system to free you up from that constant filling of the cooling tank? Just an idea.

    • @MoonshineDistilling
      @MoonshineDistilling 3 роки тому

      2009 was the first year I had built this configuration. Then I got a sump pump floating on off ‘ball’ and had it actuate a water valve to fill the condenser. Also, I learned to dial back on the amount of heat I was putting into the still because, at equilibrium, more heat was not translating into that much more output and consequently the heat load on the condenser was not as great.

    Haven’t seen any attempt, nor mention anything about the importance of being sanitary. Haven’t seen you wash nor rinse anything. I realize you are doing this on a much larger scale but certain steps are crucial to a thorough fermentation and minimizing invasive yeasts.

    • @MoonshineDistilling

      Hiya, the washing and rinsing was all off camera, but I take your point. Also, so many yeast come in with the corn itself and in the air all around us, it just adds 'local color' Some winery's and breweries actually encourage this ambient yeast effect.

    Just wanted to let you know, when you are pulling the string to open the bags, if the string gets stuck immediately when you start pulling, you are just pulling from the wrong side. I raised pigs as a kid and we fed them milled corn, so I opened quite a few of those bags. I (eventually) learned that when you opened a bag you were supposed to pull the string only from one side, and if you tried pulling the string from the other side of the bag, the string would knot up immediately.

    Hi Distillers, We have been attempting a "bourbon" style mash using corn & malted barley but we need some help. we have had great conversions and our latest mash even produced the cap that we see in the video here but we are having a hell of a time draining the wort away from the grain. i have seen larger breweries use expensive brew kettles with hoisting grain baskets but we are not that elaborate yet. does anyone have any advice on draining a 80-100 gallon mash? cheers

    I came here for info on moonshine, but I have a family member that struggled with depression/suicidal ideation, so I watched this video. I will say its quite interesting to watch how things have evolved in the thinking about this over the decades. While self-esteem is a huge component, they now know that body chemistry and brain function play a huge part. It took years to get this person to the right place that did some brain function testing, took the person off anti-depressants and put them on anti-seizure medicine. Within two weeks the transformation was incredible. Now this person is happy and well adjusted, making progress and leading a successful life. And I can tell you, this person was wanted and cared for their whole life, so it was more a factor of body chemistry and brain function. Things they hadn't studied completely in the 60's when this program was first aired.
