    Hi! You are the best english teacher I've ever seen because I'm watching all of your Macbeth videos just for fun haha. I mean, I was supposed to study Hamlet but, as I watched a few videos of yours, I decided to watch your Macbeth videos too just to know more about some of Shakespeare's plays and I find your videos much better than most, even though they don't have as many views as others. ╰(*°▽°*)╯. I like Macbeth better than Hamlet haha I don't know why. Besides, keep up with the good work. I've seen you reply to every message even in your old videos so I hope you can answer me too haha. Have a good day and be happy to know you've gained a new sub!!!!! From: Ana, doing her IGCSE's. (Fun fact, I'm spanish and only started to learn english when I was 10 but I have to do english as a first language in my exams because I'm in an english school... (┬┬﹏┬┬) )

    Hello sir. First, I have to say you are an amazing teacher and I have my Macbeth mocks in a week and didn't read the book yet but I understand everything thanks to your videos. And I would like to say a connection I've seen, so that you could tell me wether you like it or not. Macbeth says "Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" and this shows the immense guilt he feels, as blood is a symbol for guilt or shame and he doesn't know if even all the water from the oceans could make him feel less ashamed. However, lady Macbeth says "A little water clears us of this deed." I guess you could say this means she doesn't feel guilty, but I think she just has a different way of coping with the guilt by trying to convince her subconscious and soul that she feels just fine. I also think that expressing your emotions is less damaging to yourself than holding it all in, so that is why maybe Lady Macbeth went so crazy all of a sudden whilst her husband took a little longer. Do you think this is fine? New sub by the way.

    • @5QShakespeare
      @5QShakespeare 7 днів тому

      Interesting comments, Ana. Thanks. I'd say you're right on. Lady Macbeth is lying to herself when she says that line. Fighting the cognitive dissonance. Shakespeare is deliberately doubling the characters here with the washing/water motif, showing how self-lies never work. So psychologically astute. Judy Dench really brings this out when she says the line in the BEST version, 1979. Do watch it. Here: ua-cam.com/video/IgEshHhnLqU/v-deo.html I talk more about this in my character and theme videos. Here's Lady Mac: ua-cam.com/video/PXKK_tIvInU/v-deo.htmlsi=9EsPth2nddIxh1iq Thanks for the support!

    • @5QShakespeare
      @5QShakespeare 8 днів тому

      Congrats:) Hmm. I'm no actor, but it might be useful to consider how Shakespeare doubles him in the play - bossy brother doubles bossy father; son striving for independence doubles Hamlet; avenging son doubles Hamlet. Edward Bennet's performance in 2009 captures a lot of these subtleties. He could also be played as a hothead, I suppose, by leaning into the bossiness re Ophelia. 2009 chose to use his sincere emotionality and love for Ophelia to explain his crazy behaviour at the funeral and gullibility re Claudius's manipulations. My full Laertes video is here: ua-cam.com/video/aQuH6x9nYL4/v-deo.htmlsi=qBC40obz_8O24hVZ However you play it, break a leg:!

    Sir I had another Doubt Can the knocking be related to the knocking when Macbeth first meets the witches and he then contemplates if he should kill King Duncan or not It is the line If good, why do I yield to that suggestion Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, Against the use of nature?

    Hello Sir, I had doubt can we think of the people in the second chamber out of which one laughed and the other cried out 'Murder!' as Macbeth's own conscience talking to him??

    • @5QShakespeare
      @5QShakespeare 14 днів тому

      I've always read the cry as meaning the princes literally laughed and cried out. You're saying Macbeth was having an auditory hallucination? Plausible. Portia in Julius Caesar has one. Either way, real or imagined, the laugh (mockery) and cry (horror) is certainly meant to reflect Mac's conscience. So, sure:)

    Hello, I love your videos, they've helped me out a ton. At around 7:05 where Young Siward says that the devil couldn't say a worst title, I thought did Shakespeare not just put name. I think its veryyy overthinking but could it be that Macbeth is a title in his own right? That he is so evil and bad that his title isn't king, just simply Macbeth. Or could it be that that's just how Shakespeare's time would have said that?

    • @5QShakespeare
      @5QShakespeare 18 днів тому

      Thanks, Coolest. Good question. Just checked my sources, but there are no glosses for "title." What you said makes sense, though. Shakespeare could have intended the subtle pun, even if "title" was common usage for "name". He used puns like that a LOT.

    It is interesting to note that most Christians focus more on the hard rules, rather than knowing that Yahweh is a fair judge and knows one down to the intention of one's very action.

    • @5QShakespeare
      @5QShakespeare 19 днів тому

      Interesting point. Hamlet, like puritans of every time and place, wants to live by hard rules. What I love about Shakespeare is the compassion; it's hardwired into his view of flawed human nature. Even villains are usually at least questionably redeemed by the glimpses we catch of their recognizable human frailties. (Iago, maybe not so much; pure psychopath.) I think my favorite play is Twelfth Night in this regard. Ship of Fools, all.

  • @thewonderer7755

    I love the psychological and multi-faceted approach to this artwork. Your reference to a present day viewer's struggles is enlightening and solidifies the connections in my mind that I will need for exam writing. The philosophical value of your assessments are fascinating to me, especially as I find myself to be alike to Hamlet in many ways (as Shakespeare seems to have intended), helping me to get an outside perspective on my own thoughts and feelings. The mind-body duality is really the difficulty I have as I yearn to be more virtuous and dominant of my thoughts and feelings. Writing has been the main way I dealt with this in the past and now it seems to be easier.

    Neitzsche would have rocked with Hagrid. Hagrid is powerful and playful- he is chaos- he is a disrupter and he has integrity and honor. Voldemort knew exactly why he feared Hagrid… And Dumbledore too- Dumbledore represents and integrated Shadow- he is like Obi Wan Kenobi imo

    when Hamlet is saying the to be or not be soliloquy, he knows that he has been listened by Polonius and the King?

    • @5QShakespeare
      @5QShakespeare Місяць тому

      Not the soliloquy. He's speaking his thoughts aloud, so really his words are just thoughts. But right after this, when he rants at Ophelia, he probably knows he's being listened to. Film versions usually indicate early in his rant, that he notices.

      Hi Hugh. That's a good idea. I do more of that in my Hamlet videos, especially the soliloquy analysis: ua-cam.com/play/PLPa5TyZ8S8GQOes0xB53cnus-ev3_zM-G.html&si=7SAotcRucorOLmAi

      Specific attributes of archetypes vary from culture to culture and across time. It's the center of the Venn diagram that makes them archetypes.
