Finding South - New Zealand | An Off-Road Journey Through The South Island's Backcountry
We have always wanted to freely tour the beautiful, but harsh South Island of New Zealand, and after plenty of smaller trips it was time to experience a more extended journey.
Our aim was to make no plan, explore the less explored and drift with the weather throughout the Island, all while trying to experience as much as possible off the tar seal.
Join us for this 20-minute film following the highs and lows we encounter on the adventure.
Shot and Edited by Joel McDowell & Andrew Lewthwaite.

Bentayga Meets Tongariro | Bentley Auckland

During the winter of 2018, Logan and I were sent off to explore Tongariro National Park in a 2019 Bentley Bentayga. We were met by all condition - snow and blizzard on the first day, freezing rain the second and a bluebird on the last. We really tested the capabilities of this stunning work of art and had a lot of fun doing so. auckland.bentleymotors.com/nz/en/home
A Day At Mount Ruapehu | Joel McDowell Photo

Pieced together a few clips from our trip to the beautiful Tongariro. We went straight from work at 3am with the goal of spending the day exploring this beautiful area before the flood of people head to the ski fields. These stunning and peaceful views made the lack of sleep and energy completely worth it.

Over my weekend we traveled out in search of some places that few people knew about. On the way, we found some pretty amazing spots that would be easy to use pass by without looking.
Best intro and narration .Loved the video
amazing
Wicked vid! Has given me the inspiration I needed to get off my a$& bite the bullet and spend some money to get my hilux trip ready and book time off work. Thanks guys 🤙
Curious to know your route if you'd be happy to share? I overlanding and camping in the SI.. and looking for new areas
What a wonderful trip, hoping you could give me a road map of the trip, planning a trip next summer 2025
Rhat looked amazing . How did you guys find your tracks or trails down south?
realy nice :))
daaaa davai mecanico toyota tulai ma leano numai retardati here de play like profesonals lalalala:)))
Fantastic
Man, just damn good
Great stuff. To answer your final question. A more detailed look. You did a brief scan. I suggest you dig deeper on each route, check those graves stones and see the stories of those before us. Why does this road exist, how was it made, when, who kept it going, which town did it go to, why is no one there now. The real stories are fascinating
you missed the borland saddle suppose you will have to do another trip .
This is and amazing video of an awsome adventure, thank you for posting and congratulations on your engagement.😊
Great production mate. Would have been great to know the areas you visited.
Diggin' the view of Mt. Cook & Tasman @0:32 :) Beautiful country.
beautiful documentary, realistic film of a wonderful weekend in nature. without loud music in your video so that you as a viewer are absorbed in the story, chapo 👍 Albert the netherlands 🇳🇱
My crappy old bighorn made it the whole way in 2013, unforgetable
Would love a map or list of directions and instructions for getting permissions etc for your trip. (Had a look on insta but didn't find your map posting). Great vid, btw, I'm a D2 owner as well and looking to get out with the family and explore of our back country.
A bit late to the party but congratulations on the engagement, I'll be 33 years in May and you bought a tear to my eye with your proposal. Finding the right person and living your best life together is unfathomabley good. It seems like you have a most excellent start
I love how a mild gravel road seems a challenge to you guys. What I see as another day, is an adventure and the story you tell .. showing that adventure is bloody brilliant. I would hire you on the spot to tell our story if I could afford you. I'm glad you had a wicked time down south, its a beautiful place, one i probably take for granted. You are welcome back anytime and hell, even hit me up. More than happy to show you the rougher side. Although i don't think it will tell the romantic side of the south your story told but... I know a few spots. lets see what i can come up with.
Got a list of the places you guys went?
As soon as you said you didn’t have the time it’s never the same, we been going south for the last seven years minimum 3 weeks some 4 weeks and we still haven’t done them all and we going again
Very well done. What equipment do you use?
Loved this! Watched this 3 times now! Have Inspired me to do the same 🙌🏼 extremely well done on the end product!
Great trip and production guys. Can’t wait to get back to the Sth Island & must go remote. NZ is calling me Cheers
what a journey
Awesome vid guys, great footage/ narration. Thanks for sharing 👍
The production is outstanding!! Really enjoyed it.
Next time you may want to look at better off road tires.....would save a lot of hassle.....cool trip all the same......
This video was incredible.
An Aucklander who lived in the South island for 6 years. I live here, but the South Island stole my heart.
Coming to New Zealand to in June for 1 year travelling, undecided on 4x4 or van, never experienced van life, lived out of a 4x4 in Australia the last four years....
Great video, well done on your mainland adventure, you did go to a few great tracks and places,But you have just scratched the surface, down here. Come see the rest sometime. 😎
Stunning film with great story telling and cinematography. Def given me the boost to head out down south properly next time we're back in Aotearoa. For the dream!
You really had to post this just as I'm selling my truck 🤣
Hello. I'd just like to say that there's not a lot of times in my life when I have stopped to glance at the awe that is New Zealand. You have done this so much justice and I honestly think you have managed to capture a small essence of the not only the culture aka your group, but the very reason why we are the most amazing country. Amazing work I'm super impressed
Great cinematography
Awesome video Joel, really well put together and edited. There was a lot of familiar territory which has made me more excited to get back out and see it again, this video is a great snapshot as to what our back yard looks like and how to go an see it up close. Thanks for sharing.

So bloody good mate! What an adventure 🙏🏼
Nice video 👍
I love Invercargill, the closest thing to a time machine. It has a quiet charm about it.
