I’m not a professional mechanic but I usually work on my own cars so I usually know how long a job should take. I had to replace a valve cover gasket on my bmw and I couldn’t do it myself at that time since I was injured, I called 4 reputable shops and 3 of them quoted me $1200 - $1800 which seemed crazy, I called the 4th shop which I heard great things about but was the furthest away, they did the job for $500 and were completely transparent on which parts to choose from. Since then, they have been doing the work that I don’t have the time to do myself and I couldn’t be happier with their service. I believe a big issue is also the software shops use to estimate job times. How are they going to estimate the job to take longer then it would for a DIY mechanic to do at home without lifts, an abundance of tools, or much experience.
Go into diesel diag. Make some real money. Cars are rubbish and not worth the big money to fix them.
My town mobile mechanic always talked to me about " fraudulent repairs " @ Toyota dealership where he worked for 10 years before he decided to work for himself. He also said " it's a very common practice scare gullible people to get repairs " .
Many of us know or suspect there are times dealerships & independent auto repair shops rip people off often, but we can't do anything about it because we can't fix our own cars and don't have the tools.
Sounds like you need to find a new environment. Stop complaining
It took me about 52 of my 62 years on earth to become as cynical as you are here. You’re better off being aware of the ugly reality of people at your young age. It’ll save you a lot of pain and aggravation.
you need a one car garage and a lift. Specialize in classic cars. Lots of shops refusing to work on them cause they are too old. I don't get it, like working on go carts! I guess if they can't plug into it, no one knows what to do!
That's why I would never work at a car dealership. I've owned my own automotive shop and I'll tell you that isn't any better. I've stuck with heavy trucks, It's what I know and they pay has kept pace with the cost of living. The only time I worked flat rate I got 40% of the labor rate at a heavy truck dealer and I was a mobile tech and my own service writer, so that was a win. Any other way I would never do flat rate.
What a cry baby.
There are still honest techs around. They are not on Flat Rate. Are able do thorough diagnostics and repair.
I was the same way with my cell phone used it until I couldn’t use it anymore 😂 you are a smart kid. Great videos Sub!
Worked flat rate for a few years at a dealership, thankless shitty job, moved on to a mechanic for a pipeline company great money , from there moved into pipeline operations, fantastic job retired 10 yrs ago
Pure Gold!! Watching you instinctually know the issues with Women and Feminism 4.0 and trying to explain it is precious. You're young. I've seen the evolution of your videos. You're very wise for your age.... You'll do just fine. Keep doing what you're doing. You're on the right path.
I have been working at a toyota dealership for 3 years now, and i can confirm exactly what he is saying. The express service area easily has the highest turnarounds. Goes to show flat rate is a cancer and it spreads quickly. Well done video, take it easy out there.
Join the mechanic unit.
People see others driving fancy new cars and think, I should be able to have that. They don’t realize a lot of these people are in debt up to their eyeballs. I drive cars I can buy in cash. I have $75,000 in the bank just in cash. I don’t need a fancy car for validation. Btw: a loose bulb is cheaper than an oil sensor.
I’ve got a fleet of older vehicles. Those cars generally are much easier to fix and have more access in them. Have a 91 Mazda, a 93 Mazda, 07 Honda and my least favorite my wife’s 2014 CRV (that vehicle is a POS).
Yeah but it’s a lot of these shops that are making customers insufferable. And, I don’t just mean just at a dealership, I mean the 50% of independent shops which are scams. I’ve worked on cars since I was 19, all types of cars foreign and domestic. I’m disturbed how some of these shops target women with scams. My wife had an issue with her car, it would intermittently just die in the middle of driving. Battery would show low. Then after a recharge the vehicle would drive fine for a while. You guys have already figured the problem out probably, like me. She took this car into a shop and they tried to sell her a new $200 battery. She already had a new battery that was just replaced. I told them I thought the alternator was bad, they tried to pressure her on the battery. I had another shop do the alternator job (a fun job on a v6 Camry). Problem solved. Just what is the educated consumer supposed to think when they can diagnose a problem better than the shop? The shop is stupid or a scam, those really are the only two choices.
Today is my last day at the shop I work at. I've only been meeting my guarantee per week for about 3 months, which is about $660 after taxes, and I said to myself this is not worth it anymore. What finally sealed the deal was that the other day I asked the other tech to stop using my name in conversations with customers if it doesn't pertain to our job, and he took offense. The owner jumped into the conversation and literally got mad at me screaming at the top of his lung "this is my shop and I'll talk to whoever and however I want to." Meanwhile the other tech was trying to gain points making me look bad by backpedaling on things he shared to me months earlier. The owner said he'll never throw us under the bus to a customer, but the other tech shared that the owner did just that only a couple of months ago. In the midst of the owner having a rant, the other tech was listing things he hates about me. He legit said "I hate the music you play." They are both children. I'm 33, the other tech is 44, and the owner is well into his late 50's. Other things, owner offers 5% discount to every customer that walks in on parts and labor, so I'm already working for 5% less pay. He will also let customers slide on the bill if the fix is "simple." I can spend an hour diagnosing a vehicle, correcting the issue, and not get paid for it because we didn't replace any parts.
Unfortunately this man is correct. As with every “for profit” industry, there is those who attempt to obtain “profit”. Sometimes to a fraudulent levels . Welcome to America! Former tech of 30 years. I initially started out with this man’s outlook but when push came to shove, I did what most do. As they say “When in Rome!”. All techs either embrace this or leave the industry. More than before, techs are leaving because the labor time isn’t fair and there is no negotiating. Fuck dealerships, go independent!
Lol, 1K for a little square. Love it.
My first car was a 1986 cavelier station wagon. 44 now, driving a 2011 ford fusion sport in 2025. Fixing the heater tomorrow. Want to build wealth. Drive a beater.
A rant but i love your honesty. Joshua 24:15
Great message.
1991 Buick Riviera here with 56k miles and yes it has the 3800 engine. I’m staying far far away from the car epidemic in my twenties
i own two cars, i got 99 Golf and a 2007 BMW, both of them are important to me and i don't think i ever plan on selling ether of them, for example just this summer i spend twice what my golf cost me for repairs to keep it on a road, was it worth it? no, but i get attached to my cars.
It feels like this is how a young Scotty Kilmer sounded. Good stuff.
Still much cheaper than the typical rent lol
In a capitalist society, you are enslaved by the things you own.
I own BMWs which are no fun to work on. When I have an issue I talk to the service manager and ensure he knows I dont want the job rushed and not to push the technician. I dont know if it helps any but at least they know im watching. I do appreciate the good techs and know that they are hard to find.
I bought my first car a few days ago, 2002 nissan xtrail 4WD, its defineitly got age but i coudnt imagine myself without it, goes A-B and feels great to drive, never understood the competetiveness in owning the newest cars
This is the same thing in the HVAC industry. No one knows how to fix, they all just recommend replacement. Trying to sell unnecessary crap to pad their companies
Started wrenching my own car nearly 20 years ago. After getting screwed for 5k on a wheel bearing job. Now I have 20k in tools. I look after my family's vehicles. Have saved 100k+ in maintenance and repairs easily.
Engineers need to realize that complexity ≠ sophistication; sometimes less is more and whatever complexity exists should be justified in how effectively it serves its function.
I still drive my first car which my dad bought for me 13 years ago, a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer. I absolutely love the thing. It's bulletproof (although it's in the shop now because I hit a dead animal 😭) and it's been with me everywhere. I never want to get rid of it, I want to drive it until the odo has 500k kms on it. The paint is bad so I want to get a respray one day. It's so wasteful to go through cars every few years. Cars need metals which are mined, they need to be assembled and put together, all of that takes resources and energy and we should as a whole be conserving as many resources as we can for future generations. Throwing away an entire CAR is just so wasteful and sad.
2012 Camry paid 10k cash owned it for almost 4 years did the following (optional) water pump…thermostat..serpentine belt .. transmission fluid change…oil…valve cover.. just put new tires all 4.. just did lower control arms and struts (4) and motor mounts.. plugs coils gonna. Change my fuel pump it has 222k
You can have functional phone for only $300 you don't have to buy $999 one.
To be honest nothing cool about new cars. Just think about it, you have V8 in your truck and other have V6 turbo, bigger is better. Both almost same gas mileage, your truck make nice sound and more reliable. Look at Honda, you have K20 in your civic, no way a L15 more reliable, don't forget older Honda use 5 speed automatic compair to friction based transmission CVT, you cannot floor a CVT it won't last, it won't be reliable if you drive it hard.
If I could get any car I used to own back. It would me my good ol “01 Toyota Corolla that car drove so good and amazing on fuel it was low to the ground but it was super reliable and parts was like $80 or less Brand new
Parts for older cars are very cheap, I've 80s car the distributor is cheaper than 1 tire that's insane. Now a 2010 corolla buy 4 coil plug hell no I go junkyard.
All this is so Real,,, but the phone is where I have to draw the line I need my Spotify 😂kidding.. big ups bruv more people need to hear this
I started thinking the way you are a few years ago. Its good you picked up on this in your early to mid 20's. Took me until my late 20's to realize that jepordizing my financial goals to impress people who I dont know is dumb.
I have a 2014 Mustang GT/CS in Race Red. Fully specced out. All the bells and whistles. Only thing missing that you may have wanted in 2014 is a reverse camera. Anyways, it's my dream car. Yet for some reason I can't stand it. Maybe it's because insurance and car payment is a combined $700/month. Maybe the fact it gets 15 mpg has something to do with it as well. My friend has a 1995 Acura Integra coupe with a 5 speed manual. I find more joy in fixing that car up to drive than I ever have with my car. In fact, I'm selling my car next month and driving my friend's Integra until I can save to get an old automatic Honda Accord. Nothing like driving a 25-30 year old car that requires very little money to keep running and has no monthly car note. Plus, title is yours. It's your property.
8:54 Nissan Rougue getting old? Sell that thing now before that trans goes out.
and buy 2007-2010 CRV or RAV4, Nissan have low resale value, if you can find non CVT for cheap, get it.
Love the paint job and beefy tires. I remember when Ford rangers used to be tiny.
your vehicle only gets you everywhere you need to go, whenever you want. guaranteed reliable freedom. treat your vehicle well.
Saving up to buy a reliable suv mainly looking at subarus or any japanese car for less than 13k
I had an 04 jetta given to me as a first car. I didn't like it and it was a lot of work, but I'm sure it's still running somewhere. I've had 9 cars since 2016, my favorite is scion xb, maybe because I never had a civic.😅
320k on my 98 benz, 0-60 7ish sec really seems to piss people off :P
im also working as a mechanic and this is exactly why im having a bmw e30 turbo and a vw golf mk2 :D both mint condition freshly painted with refurbished engines. e30 makes 460whp and the golf mk2 294whp and they both have been going like that for years and still needs less maintinance reparation that my wifes modern peugeot xD
Man I live your videos, you have your wits together. You're going places. I was a complete asshead when I was your age. Didn't have my own car, though
