Try standing square. Wide legs and hold the axe above your head straight for a split second before the swing, your stance is dangerous, not the most efficient, and hard to be accurate with. You fix your technique and you could easily split way bigger stuff :)

Use some flour in it makes it alot better and try beef liver.. you can also use beef liver soaked in danny kings it works like a charm.

Tips for anyone using punch bait ( no matter the brand) its called punch bait because you take a stick and punch it from the top of the container down to the bottom. Then pull up at an angle. You will get a nice big ball. Or get latex gloves and grab a ball and mold it around the hook. Thats the best way. The "hairs" are typically cat tail or cotton fibers to help keep on the hook. Most important keep this stuff cold and it wont fall off like in this video. I keep mine in the fridge then an ice chest while fishing. Best channel bait out there. Disclaimer: not being a know it all just trying to toss some tips out.
