How to tie the tarpon toad
Developed fishing for tarpon in the Keys by Gary Merriman, the tarpon toad remains a standard pattern for tarpon in the Keys and around the world. Learn more about the history of this fly pattern here : www.saltwatersportsman.com/techniques/fly-tying/history-tarpon-toad-fly/
Merriman's version uses a rabbit strip tail, but this one calls for select marabou instead. You can mess around with either option to see what works for you. Of course, you can also mix up the material colors, but this chartreuse and yellow version is a great one to start with. As they say, "if it ain't chartreuse, it ain't no use."

    Great looking knot. I've used the improved blood knot for years, but need to try this knot for sure. And unfortunately Lefty would be the person to answer who came up with the improved blood knot. Maybe Huff, or Ruoff would also know.

    Do you lubricate the improved blood?

    Why do you think the knot doesn't have a kink in it ? I always though the kink came from the figure 8 knot and not the hitches. Also, do you put glue or something on the Cobra hitches to finish?

    • @theanglingcompanykeywest9544
      @theanglingcompanykeywest9544 4 місяці тому

      The half hitches contribute to the kink, mostly because they aren't symmetrical. It's true that some huffnagles come out straighter than others, but we found getting a straight connection was helped by the cobra stitches that are symmetrical around the shock. We don't use any glue on the knot. Thanks!

    You forgot the Albright in your comparison, a two turn overhand with the Bimini loop threaded through is not as easy to tie as my Duncan Loop Splice!

    Glad to see someone who knows leaders, especially the knots! I live in Montana, so there is a difference between tying a saltwater leader here than in Key West. It's usually not as warm and we don't have any humidity, so to create a more supple knot environment I soak my knots under warm tap water. This way they can be drawn tight so you can trim the tag-ends flush thus there is no weed-catching issues when stripping. Your video offers some Excellent Advice and most anglers would benefit greatly if they watched it. Thanks for sharing and btw I love your store.

    What knot on the other side of the class to the leader? also, how many stitches are you doing?

    • @theanglingcompanykeywest9544
      @theanglingcompanykeywest9544 2 роки тому

      On the other side we use another Bimini twist-otherwise the class won’t be protected on both sides. We usually cut the loop and furl the legs together then blood knot it to the butt section, but you can also tie another cobranagle or a Huffnagle. We do four stitches total, two each way.
