I just started my training for line boring, I need a lot of practice with my measurements. Do you recommend anything? I’m totally fresh
Did you touch off a tool of known length on the calibration ring prior to calibrating

That is similar to a steel rule my father had. Most have the common 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16 fractions but his was for the printing industry that had "points" and other scales as well. It was related to font sizes but amazingly the size of fonts that we understand from our modern computer programs do not actually correspond.
thank You , just started using steel rules in the 10/1000 and 1/100 range
If one of my operators took the battery out of the probe, I would shit. Our probe just lives in the tool carousel with all the other tools. They go to sleep after a few min. The batteries last for months or years. I trust the machine more than I trust a human to be taking out the batteries and handling the probe multiple times a day. One drop on the floor and it’s toast.

So, basically, you give the largest numbered reading possible. You'd say 1/2 an inch rather than 500th of an inch though both are correct and accurate, right? This subject really interests me as I've never understood the decimal form of a fraction. Thanks for adding clarity.
So what's the point of pulling out the batteries again??? We use our probes on an hourly basis, and the batteries last for months. Plus, technically, you're supposed to recalibrate the probing system with each battery change, so this seems highly counter productive.....

Since the stylus can bend, is it theoretically possible that when you jog the dial test indicator on it to check runout, the indicator can push the stylus out of center from spindle? You could then be adjusting the runout of the tip to 0 but not actually be aligned with the spindle.
it is possible but, you should be doing this in a state where there is very little pre-load on the spindle
