Love of Life Soap with Chandler Hill Harben, Veleka Grey, Ted Laplatt, Tudi Wiggins
Another complication when CBS officially moved LOL from 11:30am or noon to 4PM during its final months it would officially compete against former fellow CBS soap EDGE of Night which officially aired on ABC although in many areas when EDGE moved from CBS to ABC in December 1975 it disappeared from many areas. Both LOL and EDGE were dropped by CBS for the same reason: to expand another soap to an hour format. EDGE was dropped to expand ATWT - which premiered on the same day as EDGE: 4/2/19856 as the first soaps to debut in a half hour format. LOL was dropped to expand Y&R. EDGE not just by its name was more suited to air at 4PM since it was a hybrid of traditional soap & mystery/crime drama and had an unusually high male and teens demographic as a result. In retrospect reviewing the storylines of LOL & EDGE, EDGE seems to have the stronger storylines. LOL has this trial, Ray's jealousy of Hal regarding Arlene, Bruce's possible illegitimate child. EDGE has Logan & Raven squabbling over their son Jamie, Raven flying the coop to London in September (returning mid February 1980), has been movie star Nola (Kim Hunter) and her family arriving to do an accursed film called Mansion of the Damned, Nola posing as a kindly neighbor of Deborah's but sending her poisoned food, Nola while rehearsing her film role doing satanic prayers and looking like Medusa in the process, Nola putting speed in Miles' water cooler to drive him crazy. About March 1980 Margo Mc Kenna (Betsy) joins EDGE as ultimately delusional Emily Michaels, two weeks or so after Raven's return. Grateful that Chandler Hill Harben (Ben) made this, the finale and several other of the final episodes available. I just wish more episodes were available of the final years. On EDGE, there's many more episodes available partly due to luck and mostly due to the dedicated, diligent efforts of Sharon Gabet (Raven) and others behind the scenes. BWT today (1/13/2025) is Sharon's birthday. ;}
Wow! W.T. Martin - Hal Carson - must be really ill as he's being played by Kip Whitman in this episode. In the finale, Hal is being played by David Snell who in the sumner of 1983 would be Peter Nevins on EDGE of Night - during EDGE's final year joined the soap's writing team. David doesn't look anything like Kip either.
Starting in the summer of 1983 David Snell appears on EDGE as Peter Nevins - and joins the writing team of EDGE in 1984 - EDGE of nIght's final year.
The Young and the Restless started being one hour the following Monday.
This show didn't do so well in the ratings when it was on @ 4PM ET from April 23, 1979 to February 1, 1980, cancelling "Match Game".
It would be great if more episodes from the 70s could be found like 1984 till 1980
Loved Margo McKenna on EDGE OF NIGHT as Emily Michaels
She was an entirely different character on EDGE - she started there about a month after LOL folded.
I would love to be able to find more love of life episodes from the 1970s up to this episode
Mr. Harben, thanks for the clips. By the way, we share a birthday!!!!!
Margo McKenna is a beautiful woman!!!!
My mom used to watch this soap when I was a kid during the 1970’s.
“Love of Life” is old-fashioned done exactly right. It’s a style of acting that harkens back to the early days of soaps. The original actress who played Meg was, I think, especially good at it. Basically when the show goes melodrama something interesting is happening so just watch and enjoy it! Shea and I talk to each other like this with frequency because it’s fun and I’m always surprised when someone remembers how to do it. Anyway, thank you for posting these clips: LOL is a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me.
I remember Van(Audrey Peters) who played Reva’s mom on Guiding Light!
I don’t remember ever calling her Meg.
Hmmm, this is probably one of the few if actually the only time Ben called his mother Meg by the name Mother. The other times - at least as an adult - he called her Maggie.
I like these episodes you have found I wish the period of the time of the 70s was all preserved I'm afraid the studio has wiped the tapes I would love to find 1973 or 74 thru 1980
One thing that confused me about the final episodes is why Carrie's seen as a nurse such as in this episode? When Carrie was first seen in Rosehill, she worked as Meg's housekeeper or maid - given a nursing shortage why would she work as a domestic if she had nursing credentials? Only thing I can think of - in real life and in soap land - is Carrie first arrived in Rosehill from Denver to be with Arlene plus Carrie was escaping from a bad husband who beat her so it might have taken some time to establish nursing credentials after moving out of state.
This was one of my ALL-TIME favorite soaps when I was in college!! I'd sometimes even skip class to watch it LOL!!!
February 1, 2024 marks 44 years after CBS aired "Love of Life" for the last time.
A shame when a show ends on a cliffhanger.
The Opening is a Newer Version of the Opening, The Original Opening was a scene at a Window and the name of the Show in Cursive.
Mom would've loved the Love of Life cliffhanger finale, She loved her Stories she called them!
GREAT POST!
I still watch it in rememberance of her.
My Mom used to love watching this soap opera. RIP mommy
I thank you for posting this one.
I enjoyed the theme opening for this soap.
Next Thursday (February 1, 2024) will be the 44-year anniversary of Love Of Life ending its nearly 29-year run in daytime TV. It would be unlikely that we'd see cancelled soaps return to producing all-new episodes anytime soon. However, it would be nice to see surviving episodes of LOL and other cancelled daytime soaps (including Proctor & Gamble owned soaps) be remastered, and preserved for future generations to enjoy, and them be available on streaming services like Paramount+, Peacock, Amazon Prime, Netflix, etc. I certainly miss seeing As The World Turns and Guiding Light. Another World was another good show too, as was Capitol, and other long gone soaps like Search For Tomorrow, The Edge Of Night, Dark Shadows, etc. I hear Santa Barbara was also good. I remember Loving and The City too. All My Children and One Life To Live, I also miss them too. With Days Of Our Lives recently moving over to Peacock after ending its 57-year run on NBC, I wouldn't be surprised to see The Young & The Restless and The Bold & The Beautiful move over to Paramount+ if in the event that CBS wishes to go the route of doing afternoon news show (presumably under the CBS Afternoons or CBS Afternoon News banner) to compete with ABC's GMA3 and NBC News Daily.
Wow that opening attorney is intense!! 😮
Oh wow @20:41 Loved her as Sarah Shayne mother of Reva, Roxie and Rusty on Guiding Light. Wish we had conversation over coffee soaps like this now.
Forsaking All Others Episode 40 Inspired by “Love of Life” Shots of empty sets. A director walks through what appears to be a set that looks like Dustin Mudd and Earnest Wood's trailer. Then he walks through another set that resembles the Mudd kitchen, another set that looks like a court room and another that looks like a cafe. An AI DRONE is flying behind him singing a verse of TONY BENNETT's "We'll be together someday." The mysterious figure stops, lights a cigarette, starts quickly smoking it and then tosses it onto the floor and steps on it. Shot of a classic radioła AI DRONE No tears...there's always tomorrow... Shot of DIRECTOR exiting studio and closing its door. Cut to INT. ENDURING SORROW'S OWN GENERAL HOSPITAL NANETTE FRAME sitting in the Emergency Room, waiting for word on her husband FAUSTINO FRAME'S condition, having been accosted by a tall, pale man wearing an, elegantly tailored, royal blue, long-sleeved shirt and khakis pants who has revealed himself to be HENRY BRINTHROPE of Silver Creek, Colorado. NANETTE I don't understand. Could you repeat what you just said? HENRY (In an English accent) Strange. I thought I was quite clear. I said I am looking for my fiancé, Tristessa Ghent who has absconded from Silver Creek, Colorado. Tense music swells. NANETTE Tristessa Ghent?! (a beat) Tristessa Ghent? (eyes dart up and down the length of Henry's body) That's (a beat) not possible (stands) HENRY Not possible? (Mouth remains slightly ajar) And why is not it possible? I can assure you that I have come a long way in search of her. I asked quite a lot of people. Endured far more than I care to discuss. Now, if you could just point me in her direction I will collect Ms. Ghent and depart this insufferable swamp with grace and gratitude. NANETTE (turning around and beginning to pace, calmly) Maybe you should just slap me and save us all some time. HENRY (taken aback) I beg your pardon, madam? NANETTE (turning to face Henry) Maybe you should slap me (raising her voice) or take me back upstairs(stomping her feet once)! HENRY (puzzled) What does that mean? What are you trying to say? Where is Tristessa Ghent? NANETTE (eyes opening wide) I suppose whatever it says (a beat) in the script. An alarm sounds. SPEAKER Code Blue. Code Blue. Code Blue. HENRY Again I must beg pardon. Of course Ms. Ghent is real. She is as real as you and I are. NANETTE (sing-songy) She is not real! You are not real. None of this (raises right hand and does a clockwise circle with the index finger of her right hand) is real. We must be back on the ship. Why, (paces) this is a dream. Only a dream! AI DRONE (from a distance) In the hushed and dimly lit corridors of the hospital, Lt. Geoffrey George, a seasoned investigator, approaches Nanette Frame and Henry Brinthrope, the formerʼs eyes brimming with tears. The weight of the situation hangs heavy in the air. LT. GEORGE Nanette, I have to ask you a few more questions. Lt. George moves his head the length of Henry Brinthrope' body, making eye contact and then slightly parting his legs and crossing his arms. LT. GEORGE (CON'T) Who are you? HENRY (sternly) As it turns out, no one at all (moves to leave, gives LT. George one last look) Constable. HENRY exits as LT. GEORGE and NANETTE look on and then at each other. LT. GEORGE (reddening) Nanette. May I see your purse? NANETTE (grabbing her purse and remembering the Patina St. Pierre mask in it) You absolutely may not. Why in the world would I let you do that and why would you want to, anyway? Lt. GEORGE We're looking for the gun that shot your husband. A Smith and Wesson Model 60 .357 Magnum. Like the one your husband reported missing the day before he was shot on The Moist Pearl. Sad music plays. NANETTE FRAME (tearfully) Oh, Lieutenant George, I must profess my innocence! I had no knowledge of any missing gun. Faustino and I may have had our tumultuous moments, but I would never wish him harm. Please, I beg you, believe me! Lt. George, with a gentle yet determined demeanor, leans closer to Nanette, understanding the gravity of the situation. LT. GEOFFREY GEORGE (hushed voice) Mrs. Frame, the absence of that gun, seals someone's fate as a first-degree murderer if Faustino doesn't make it through the operation. You haven't been home, have you? Music swells once more NANETTE (offended) Not that it is any of your business but you can ask anyone; i've been here, like a dutiful wife, since they brought my husband into the ER. LT. GEORGE Exactly. We can guess what it means if then gun is in your possession. If the gun isn't in your possession it would go a long way toward... The sound of footsteps echoes through the corridor as Nurse Ambrosia Ashe emerges from the emergency room. Nanette's heart skips a beat, and she clings to a glimmer of hope. NANETTE FRAME (whispering) Nurse Ashe, please, I implore you. How fares Faustino? Will he overcome this ordeal? Nurse Ashe, her tired eyes reflecting both compassion and weariness, places a hand on Nanette's trembling shoulder. NURSE AMBROSIA ASHE (softly) Dr. Moore is doing everything within his power, Nanette. We can only hope for the best and pray for his recovery. Shot of Nurse Ambrosia walking away. AI DRONE Suddenly, like a tempest in the midst of a delicate dance, Patina St. Pierre storms into the scene, accompanied by Mayor Jackson Dale. Her emotions overflow, painting the air with an aura of melodrama. PATINA ST. PIERRE (dramatically pointing at Nanette) You! You had it all, Nanette! We could have made this a sexy and mutually beneficial alliance, the four of us. But your ceaseless chatter and your institutionalization. Well, it is a buzz kill to say the least. If Faustino meets his demise, mark my words, I shall ruin you! (points) Ruin you! An AI DRONE zips by. AI DRONE Lt. George, unmoved by the theatrics, maintains his calm, observing the scene unfold. NANETTE FRAME (slow, trembling voice) Oh, Lieutenant George, I find myself ensnared in a web of deceit and mistaken identity. Like a fragile dove, I stand accused, unjustly so. Pray, I beseech you, unravel the truth and expose the true malefactor lurking in the shadows. For if Faustino succumbs to this cruel fate, my heart shall shatter into a thousand pieces, and justice must be served! AI DRONE The air in the hospital corridor grows heavy with anticipation as the fate of Faustino Frame teeters on a precipice. This is Ira Frame reminding you that Enduring Sorrow means (a beat) FORSAKING ALL OTHERS. NANETTE Frame? Fame?! They're his children? The AI drone plays swelling organ music from the hole in its body to approximate its ears. AI DRONE (CON'T) Whose that? Why? It's the Mudd family. Let's hear why they have made this increasingly common trip to the hospital. AVIVA MUDD and BARRY MUDD through the automatic doors of the Emergency Room and approach Nanette and LT. George. EARNEST WOOD follows, slightly behind. AVIVA (Looking both ways) Where is he? Where's my boy? The AI Drone projects a scene from the holes meant to approximate its eyes. It is a scene depicting DUSTIN MUDD in the middle of a scene in one of the ER operating rooms. DR. QUARTER RALSTON and NURSE SCOTLAND SANFORD try to reason with him with their hands up. AI DRONE Call me Ira. NANETTE (pointing to the tv) There's Dustin. This really is all too much. AVIVA I won't lose another... The scene on the tv causes Nanette to faint in LT. George's arms while others come to watch the scenes unfold on the projection and in front of them. Cut to LENORE still holding Captain Kandir Atmosphero. LENORE (dryly) Must be an epidemic. Captain Kandir Atmosphero burrows his face onto her shoulder. HEATHER Shhh. We're in a hospital. (Suddenly, concerned) Oh My God Is that Dustin? What is he doing? HEATHER'S hands meet and then she raises them so that her fingers touch her chin. AVIVA (frustrated) Idiot. Far as I can see. Never mind. I'll find him myself. BARRY Aviva. Don't fly off the handle. AVIVA clicks the heal of her left foot on the hospital floor, emitting a knocking sound before rushing off in the direction of Dr. Ralston's Operating Room. Barry, Lt. George, Heather, Ira, Lenore, Captain Kandir Atmosphero and a few AI Drones, whose names are, as of yet, unknown, follow closely behind. HENRY BRINTHROPE walks over to IRA FRAME'S projection. He sees PATINA ST. PIERR'S doppelgänger in DR. RALSTON'S Operating Room. The surgery held up by DUSTIN MUDD'S performance. HENRY (startled, making a fist to his chest with his right fist) Tristessa. FADE OUT.
Both my mother and maternal grandmother LOVED Love of Life! I remember as a kid having to be very still while they watched it together.
Love Ted Leplat. He was excellent on Guiding Light as Andy Norris
For The Last Time On Love Of Life and on CBS Daytime,, This Program Was Recorded!!
You could use that guy's forehead as a billboard.
The open reminds me of classic Y&R but with a much different theme. But the LOL logo reminds of Santa Barabars's script type choice.
That was the final episode? Sad they we're given notice to take a take earned final bow from the show to the fans. The closing song and seeing the empty sets was well done, fitting and sad all at one.
Hagood Hardy's theme song is terrific.
This was so cool to watch, thank you for sharing! Larry Auerbach was spot on when he said the 4:00 time slot was a bad time for daytime soaps. I grew up in Houston, Texas and our local CBS affiliate dropped the show when it went to 3 PM (central time). Years earlier the same thing happened to The Edge of Night when it moved to ABC. Our local ABC affiliate choose not to air it at all. I was a soap fan during the late 70's/early 80's and only knew about LOL and EON and their actors because of Soap Opera Digest. Anyway, thanks again for this!

Loved this show too
Elizabeth Kemp has had quite the transformations over the years. I wonder if she was ever asked years later if she was disappointed in the way Love Of Life was cancelled? Meaning none of the stories were resolved. Kemp’s character, Betsy collapsed on the court room floor after testifying and that’s how the show ended. 😳😳
This is the last week of Love of Life. Feb. 1980. Betsy collapsed after testifying, and that’s how the series ended. 😳😳

LOVE OF LIFE ended its run with a cliffhanger on February 1, 1980. After testifying in a trial, Betsy Crawford (Margo McKenna) collapse while leaving the stand. No other networks couldn't picked up the show for another season, and the cliffhanger still remains unresolved.
