We are ready for the big adventure! On the 6th of March, we finally set sail from Ilha Brava, Cape Verde to Martinique, Caribbean. For this challenge, we're raising money for Seashepherd because we find it really important to give something back to the ocean. Seashepherd is an organization that fights to defend, protect, and conserve the ocean. We love the fact that they use direct action to pr...

    What method of self steering are you using?

    • @sailing_naia
      @sailing_naia 5 місяців тому

      Hi, good question, we used sheet-to-tiller self steering, more specifically used the jib sheet. Worked like a dream with very little adjustments along the trip. We had a homemade windvane built by a previous owner, but it really never worked properly, we discovered a good sheet-to-tiller setup on our trip to cape verde and have been loving it. Very organic, no power needed, hard to break, easy to fix.

    • @johnmadgwick
      @johnmadgwick 5 місяців тому

      @@sailing_naia Thank you for your reply. I am interested in the self steering because I also own a Pahi 42 although my boat has the original Cutter rig with wishbone booms on the inner jib and the mainsail. Are you using the sheet to tiller self steering at 4:47 in this video?

    • @sailing_naia
      @sailing_naia 5 місяців тому

      @@johnmadgwick Yes, we used it along the whole trip, we can switch it from genoa sheet to the gennaker sheet, if we change sails in lighter winds.

      Can you please explain your "self steering-system" didnt understand the technique...!? THANKS! and best regards from Germany, LINUS

    • @sailing_naia
      @sailing_naia 3 місяці тому

      @@linusadventuresandtravels look up sheet-to-tiller self steering, it will explain a lot. There's a legendary book by john letcher on self-steering for sailing craft. Look that up as well. We used the jib sheet specifically.

    why are you turning the eggs ? and no fish caught ? the move to pull in the line with the cordless drill is genius.

    • @jarridtschaikowski977
      @jarridtschaikowski977 5 місяців тому

      They last longer if you turn them ;) there is tiny bit of air inside oxidating the shell.. by turning the bubble is on a different spot and the eggs last longer fresh

    • @sailing_naia
      @sailing_naia 5 місяців тому

      Exactly as Jarrid described! As for the fish we had loads of sargassum along the way and went quite fast for nice trolling, we tried but only had 2 small skipjacks and 1 small amberjack. As for the drill, we were just taking off old line from the reel to replace it, we weren't actually reeling in fish 😅, but maybe worth a try haha

    loving this wharram…the top side salon cabin is so nice and not typical for this boat…the settee looks so comfortable, but i’ll share my experience with sailing/ cruising an open design seawind 1000xl catamaran…it was so comfortable just putting the table down and having a huge padded area to spread out on, it pretty much stays this way …the visibility is great, so you can set auto pilot and just lounge if you want…trays work great for serving meals and snacks topside…don’t miss the table at all…and it sure provides a lot of usable storage under there… but i hope you make it your own, and have a blast!…i’ll be catching up and subscribing! cheers!
