Let's be honest - bass is hard. Music is hard.
The mission of this channel is to create bass content that's informative and practical, yet fun and engaging. I'm primarily an orchestral player, but I have years of experience in a wide array of genres, so you can expect multi-dimensional videos on a variety of techniques and topics.
I am based in Omaha, Nebraska, where I currently play as Associate Principal Bass with the Omaha Symphony. In addition to my orchestra work, I frequently freelance in jazz, Latin, rock, pop, and other styles, as well as some occasional studio work.
My primary drive behind making videos is to hopefully help anyone who watches, and that means you! I'd love to hear from you if you found my videos helpful, or if you're interested in something I haven't covered yet.
Be safe | be sane | keep practicing :)

I bought a bass in a BLIZZARD?! - 1850 Xavier Jacquet
I am going to play this part as a percussionist, I was stunned by the difficulty of the solo's around the orchestra. A really tuff part but u nailed ur solo!
💚💚💚💚
It's brave of you sharing your story. These issues affect a lot of musicians and it's rarely talked about. Glad you're doing better as well

What type of rozen or Rosen do you use?
skibidi
Do you use 1-2-4 fingering for neck positions and 1-2-3 for advanced position from f by index on g string right??
Amazing!!!
супер
Superb as always. Love the very crisp articulation. You’re a rockstar!
Thanks for uploading an exerpt of the Bass part! As a composer I'm learining a lot from watching this.
Your sound is amazing! What strings and rosin do you use?
Sounds goes nuts!
Bass player here and this video hit home. Been having some issues with my bow arm while playing doe a while now (French bow). Had a scary flare up and a couple instances of trigger finger at a pops gig where I had to play an electric bass part on double bass with no amp since personal manager didn’t tell me I needed it. I sleep on my right side and drive a lot and have suspected that my elbow could be the culprit. Even been sleeping with a sleeve but nothing firmer like an elbow pad or brace. I know have a who,e new rabbit hole to explore since I thought it was just carpal tunnel. Ha. Thanks for the video!
💜
That German bow spiccato 🎉🎉
And people criticize Mozart’s style as simplistic 🙄. His music is so perfect and polished, it sounds so natural and effortless to the ear….until you try to play it!
Amazing
Question, not a string player and the only thing string related I played was a acoustic guitar, but how do you know what notes you're playing without a fretboard? (i believe thats thats whats its called
really good question! a fair amount of playing out of tune in the beginning, but you work to map out the fingerboard into muscle memory over time and practice. there's a handful of "landmark" positions that help contextualize things - for example where the thumb meets the heel of the neck - but intonation is definitely a lifelong endeavor on a fretless string instrument. cheers!
@@BobbyScharmann thank you dearly.
I remember my grandfather making fun of the bass farting sound when I would practice.
On the string, more or less?
pretty much, yeah!
Great❤
amazing i play an instrument my self and i know how hard is it to get to this stage
you should try to put the sheet music along with your playing it would be very cool to see you play the music in real time :) 👍👍👍
What strings are you playing? Also what Bow?
hi! strings are Bel Canto on all four, and the bow is a Reid Hudson from the mid 90s
@@BobbyScharmann Thank you for getting back to me. Your whole setup sounds amazing 💯💯 Keep up the excellent playing 👍🏽
Nice sound!
Mozart makes it fun!
Es la parte que me tocó aprender a mi actualmente
Very impressive!!!
Beautiful, thanks for giving us a good reference
The “research document” 😅
Brilliant set of videos. Thanks so much for sharing. Wish I’d known some of this 20 years ago when I was first starting out on my audition journey here in the UK. About 20 auditions later and a number of trial contracts I managed to get my first job 10 years ago!
i wish i would have figured things out 20 auditions ago 🙃 whether or not i will ever figure it out again is yet to be seen. thanks for watching! glad you enjoyed them.
This is also a bassoon excerpt from H E L L ! Double tonguing is not fun 😭😭
yeah i don't envy you on that one 🙃
Oml, you are bringing me back to my ensemble auditions in fall of last year when I had to play this excerpt. Straight up the most vile excerpt I've ever had to play and I had like a week to prepare it 😬
Thank you, for making this video
and thank you for listening!
Hello Mr. Scharmann! I am a senior in highschool and I am just now trying All-State. I have had the same bass teacher since 8th grade but I hadn’t seen really great improvement up until sophomore year. Anyways, the state audition is on the 28th, region being the 21st. I loved your audition prepping videos and hope to implement some of the techniques in your series. Thank you for your hard work!
that's so great to hear! i'm thrilled that you enjoy the videos and found them helpful. let us know how your All State audition goes!
You mentioned playing that one lick up the octave... have you thought of making a video on various extension/B string excerpts and whether to take them up the octave or play as written? That could be a cool idea! Great video, this analysis of the excerpt is so helpful.
thanks Leif! that's actually a really good idea for a video...could definitely be a good topic. there's lots of places where it's "typical" to play down the octave...think that first page of Brahms 2 mvmt 1 at the end of the first big crescendo being an example of the D being taken down the octave to match the cello line. thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!
I'm a violist primarily, I just bought a bass to learn. At what point will I need to pay for an extension? Can I get through the first 4 Suzuki books for example? Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks
you wouldn't need an extension really ever, unless you were planning to pursue a career in orchestral bass. even then, an extension is never required for the job. i have heard that some orchestras will require either an extension or a five string (the latter particularly in Europe), but i've only seen that requirement after being offered the job.
Great stuff all around! Always have some good info. I’m wondering about that first group of 16th notes, I’ve been told in the past the line should come away slightly from the first note so that the emphasis is on the first C sf, same with the Eb run. Wondering your thoughts on this?
i can definitely see an argument for that! i think the goal is definitely the emphasis on the first note, as well as clarity on all five notes. personally i've found that when i try to "fall away" from the first note, it sort of loses that "wild" characteristic, but if you can pull it off, go for it!
Woah that's very good! I can never understand how bass players can play fast 16th notes on that big instrument XD I've been playing violin for 19 years, but never played sym 39. sad cause I enjoy listening to it a lot.
hey, thanks! i feel the same way about Mozart 40...my orchestra has played it twice since i started and i was cut off both times because they reduced strings. now that i'm 2nd chair they'll have to pry that piece out of my cold unfeeling hands the next time we play it 😤
i love playing the badinere, my favorite out of every movement in the suite. I play piano and I enjoy the harmony and also the middle voices as well as the bass. The bass is my favorite
as a former pianist, i enjoy the harmony. as a former violist, i enjoy the middle voices. as a current and career bassist, i definitely agree that the bass is my favorite!
カッコイイです❤ 以前、私はアマオケでヴァイオリンを弾いていました。 英雄の生涯は、ベームの1963年のライブ動画で、シュトたライヒャーが弾いているのを見たことがあります。
Hey Bobby, I just took my first pro audition for a regional orchestra last weekend, and I followed lots of your advice from this series... and I got hired! Thanks for putting this out there publicly for everyone to see, this is an excellent resource and made the whole process feel much less overwhelming for me. Playing in front of the screen for the first time was a trip!
hey, that's fantastic news! so glad you found it helpful, and huge congrats on your win!! cheers!
@@BobbyScharmann Thanks for the kind words! What was also interesting was I totally thought I blew my chances on my solo Bach, it didn't go very well IMO. It's interesting how sometimes a mistake that you feel is a big deal winds up not being a deal breaker for the committee.
totally! in my most recent audition that i won, i asked to play a Mozart excerpt again in semis and heard the committee chair say "....okay...?", as to say "...well it sounded good to me, but sure go for it" haha. we are our own worst critic at the end of the day, after all.
@@BobbyScharmann 11 months later... three more auditions taken. didn't advance in the first two, but got on the sublist at one. the third one was the asst principal chair of the first job i won, and I got the gig. this is such an incredible resource.
Have cubital tunnel have an upcoming appointment with a specialist. I appreciate your video I’m a bit nervous on how they will treat it
best of luck to you 🫡 in talking to others who have had similar issues, i'd say if you don't feel comfortable with your specialist, seek a second opinion. i think some surgeons will push for surgery because they get paid more but i might be wrong. ask about all your options!!
Thanks at all
Please, make more video about studies in hard part
Thanks for doing this video and congrats to you!! I have one in 3 weeks, is that enough time? Lol
thanks! 3 weeks is better than 3 days i guess...best of luck to you!
Lovely, please give me your fingering options force this Etude, hopefully thanking you in advance.
you might be able to slow the video down to see fingerings better...but i am planning to do a breakdown video of this excerpt soon so stay tuned for that 👍🏻
Fantastic tutorial thank you.
thanks for watching!
thanks for the vid i think i’m gonna use the fingering you used for that middle section
cool! thanks for watching 👍🏻
