It's so funny that no matter what you do, there's always people telling you how to do it "properly" 😂 Ignore them, you're doing good brother
So true, thank you man. I’ve literally been born into this doing it for 40 years. Just want to help people in an easy way but always gotta deal with the trolls. It’s just motivation, comments like yours mean a lot and help keep me going. I appreciate you 🙏
If you do that you'll never get Bananas . It's to cold where you live bananas take over 12 months to develop.
This specific variety does not produce bananas. It’s a hybrid cold tolerant variety that survives cold winters in northern climates. Musa Basjoo is the variety name 🙏
Let me know how that worked out for you 😂😂😂😂 you don’t cut the babies off nor do you cut the main trunk till after it’s flowered
In zone 6 with cold winters, this is what we do for the variety musa basjoo. Our growing season is so short we rarely even get flowers. Here’s a proper explanation: “Outdoors, the rhizomes are cold hardy to minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit if they are properly pruned and mulched to protect them from freezing temperatures. The plant growth will die back to the ground during the winter in USDA hardiness zones 5 to 8. It is recommended that after the frost kills the leaves, the stems should be cut back to 1-2 feet high. A thick layer of mulch should be applied around the base of the plant to protect the roots.” Hope this helps, happy growing 🙏
😂😂😂 who’s going to tell him
Some of my canna haven't froze out yet. I do need to let them freeze, correct? Some still have green, purple or colored leaves. I only have one that the foliage is actually dryish. Also I have two with green striped leaves, in pots, so I brought them in to grow and keep me company over the winter...
That’s awesome, enjoy! You don’t have to wait for them to freeze, many do but it is not necessary and they will still store just fine.
😊 ☀️ 🪴
That's not how a banana plant works...
Hey there, thanks for the comment. That’s how this one does believe it or not. It’s a hybrid cold tolerant perennial for northern climates. It does not produce bananas. Variety is Musa Basjoo if you are curious. Happy gardening 🙏
Hi - and like others said, thank you for a direct, simple instruction video! I have seen other vids that say after they've had most of the dirt removed, to then put them in a cardboard box with newspapers or paper grocery bags over them to help keep things dark. From you video, it appeared that you just set these in your buckets in your basement without any cover. Is that the recommended way? And - thank you again for a great job of this.
Yup! I just put them in the dark basement and they are good to go, I don’t cover them.
I was given some huge canna tubers, someone said I needed to keep them moist over the winter. Do I need to do that or not?
No I do not keep mine moist. You actually want the opposite, you want them dry and cool. The basement or a fridge and keep dark but don’t cover them.
Ahh. I was only picking the seed ball off. Thanks!
Glad I could help! Good luck!
Yum 😋
I wish! Unfortunately this is an annual foliage plant, not the sweet potato you eat. But I will save it and try to plant the tuber next year!
Omg that patatoes is huge 😮❤
Right! Unfortunately this isn’t edible as it’s an ornamental but can’t wait to plant it next year and see the size the plant gets!
Thats a good looking tuber 🤌
Haha! Yes I agree thanks friend 🙏
Beautiful
Thank you 🙏
EXCELLENT video…very informative!!! There was no time wasted giving excess information such as a “cute” introduction.
Thank you so much, I appreciate your support 🙏
Very informative thank you! First time this year purchasing them from a local garden center, I put them in planters. They were huge and very pretty to have! Im taking them out now. I live in West Michigan. Don't have a basement, could they go in a pot or paper bag in a none heated garage or should they go in a spare closet closed off in a large paper bag for the winter?
This is awesome to hear, you are going to do great! I’d choose the closet, the tubers will die if they are in an area where they freeze. Choose the coolest closet in the home.
@@BuddhasBotanicalsthank you! I’m going try to make a landscape divider with them next year. They will be beautiful!
I would love to see more about your business model. Thanks
Thanks for the link from Facebook. I bought perlite so I think that may be okay?
I haven’t tried perlite but I would think it would be fine, same principle.
Don’t forget the petioles!
Absolutely!
Thank you kindly for your help. I am now subscribed and delving deep into your Mad Skills and experience. I see why my winter overing hibiscus has over-taken the summy hallway 😂. I will trim as per instruction 🙏
Thank you and happy growing! If you have any questions let me know!
My indoor plant collection is expanding, though there's deletes at times as well, I before mentioned of having tossed out my many tropical hibiscus for the rounds of aphids and spider mites, as well as 'Black Pagoda' lipstick plant, aphids would cover the stems and new growth, it's now in the compost pile! ...
We all figure out the plants we do best with! They do make a systemic insecticide for aphids and whiteflies, you drench the soil and the plant absorbs it and when the bug tries to feed, it gets infected and dies. Works really well for plants in the house. Good luck and happy growing!
@@BuddhasBotanicals I have a massive acreage gardens, huge veggie patch, etc, the work is enormous, never ending, so yes, if something requires repeated bug control, I tend to lose patience, and that goes for outdoor perennials and whatnot as well. I know I could use systemics and actually did with those hibiscus, though I later thought it was just time to concede defeat and giving opportunity and room for other less buggy plants.
😊 Can you use Hypertufa pot for vegetable or fruits tree thanks
I don’t typically because they are smaller pots and vegetables/ fruits want a lot of room for roots. If you did a big hypertufa, say 5-10 gallons, then it would be fine. So to answer your question the material is safe to grow anything in, it just needs to be big enough for what you are growing.
Excellent! Thank You. Zone 5/6
You're welcome and good luck!
Thanks for the video. How much do you sell these for?
I sell the empty ones for $30 or $50(bigger ones, clamshell). Planted up, I sell for $50 or $70.
Thanks! @@BuddhasBotanicals
Yes, indeed good advice, as well it gives the tubers the chance to set eyes for next year. I'm wayyyy north of you, I just dug mine after about ten days following a hard frost, they're now in storage.
That’s nice to hear, north of me must mean Canada or an upper state? Must be cold, smart to have dug them up already! Happy gardening 🙏
@@BuddhasBotanicals Yes, I'm in western Canada, the last three out of four growing seasons have extended well into October, as comparted to the past where they'd often end in early September frosts. I'm on a large stunning rural four acres, a good two of that in yard, my garden chores are "almost" wrapped up for the season with garden veggies dug and in storage, leaves mulched back into the lawn and yesterday I dug into the ground about 50 dang pots of perennials, roses and shrubs to overwinter, I don't know how I keep accumulating and propagating soooo MANY plants that all now need to find their own special spot in the yard, garden buddies are at times even told "DO NOT BRING ME ANYTHING!!" LOL. 🙄😂
I enjoy watching, I cut back the tropical hibiscus bush way back and chopped the roots. I soaked the root ball in mosquito bite tea replaced soil then watered with the left over tea blasted bush with the hose. Then will treat it with other business bits. 2 or 3 times won't have to worry about hurting the bees. How do you treat your soil so you don't bring in bugs in the house ? One year I bought in aphids and fought them all winter and fungus nats . .
Thank you and all very good stuff you are doing. I actually don’t treat my soil for anything, I’ve never had a need too. I keep an eye on them outdoors and spray horticultural oil every couple weeks for pest. When fall rolls around, i usually don’t have anything bad on the plant or in the soil. Fungus knats love wet soil, so keeping in dry is first line of defense. Aphids aren’t an issue with my spray schedule, but you can get a systemic insect you drench the soil before bringing inside and the plant will absorb it, aphids or whiteflies that try to feed on the plant will die.
You learned that from Helen of Georgia.
What is the watering rules? I just killed mine😢
I water once a week. Take to the sink or shower and water until it starts to spill over. Stop and let drain. Then I rehang it.
Thank you so much. I have several pots so I'll be rocking next Spring!!!
You are welcome and good luck, you will be a fan for life after trying once! Happy gardening 🙏
Lots of planning involved in those beautiful flowers!
Oh yes! But so much fun too 🙏
I gave up on my five hibiscus plants, they ALWAYS had issues with either aphids or spider mites, I LOVED those hibiscus, though I have tooo much other work to always be battling bugs! :(
I can definitely relate to the struggle, it’s not easy! But if you ever decide to start again, I have some helpful tips to avoid these pests inside the home for the winter. Happy gardening 🙏
@@BuddhasBotanicals My hibiscus collection had been of the newer developed varieties having individual blooms that each lasted four or five days, they were glorious. I did try a 2 in 1 systemic insecticide / fertilizer, took three weeks to for the aphids to die off and the foliage kinda went stunted. Not saying I won't try again, though will limit my number of hibiscus to just a few. I just tossed out a lipstick plant hybrid for being badly prone to aphids, lovely foliage on that one, but I can't keep up with such care. The rest of my collect isn't so vulnerable, though I hope to never get mealy bugs introduced to the house, those are such buggers as well!
Thanks. Good to know
Happy to help, good luck!
Where did you find the clamshell fiber liner? Great video! I just made my first hypertufa using your recipe. It was so fun! I can't wait to make more.
Omg I love hearing this! So happy you did it and had fun. Unfortunately the company stopped making the clamshell years ago. I saved a few and just use them for hypertufas now. I am considering trying to find someone to 3d print me a mold. We will see.
Can you root these in water?
I have tried many times and they do not root well in water, but they are extremely easy to root in potting mix with high humidity and misting.
@@BuddhasBotanicals what is the best time of year to do this?
@@kcbknitter you can do it anytime of year but the spring and summer is the easiest because it’s warm. The fall is also nice time because you will probably prune your plant anyone before bringing inside so you can use those clippings to start new babies. Lots of options with this super easy plant!
@@BuddhasBotanicals thank you, this is very helpful. I'm doing exactly that, getting ready to prune it back. Now I can give propagating it a try.
How do you trim it during the blooming season…mine is top heavy and leggy looking. ….just give it a haircut?
Absolutely, trim the same way as in the video. You can trim these at any time, growing or dormant.
What is and where do you get the rooting hormone?
The plant is called red tiger abutilon. The rooting hormone I like is called Clonex gel and you can buy on Amazon. You don’t need a lot so small bottle is plenty.
Is the red bush tree a Lantana also?
Yes it is, both the examples I used were lantanas.
My lantanas always get crispy when I bring them inside. Any tips?
@@lewislieder it’s all part of the process of adjusting to indoors for the winter. Mine lose a ton of leaves and the ones remaining tend to be crispy for a while. Put it near a window and lightly water, the new growth and leaves should come out normal again.
Will it work to use coconut coir instead of peat moss?
Yes you can absolutely use coconut coir. It’s not as easy to work with but it’s not too difficult either.
Great tutorial! Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful! Happy gardening 🙏
Thanks for actually showing the pruning process. I have a 20 year old lantana at the house I just bought in Spain. The mountain goats feed on it and that’s the only pruning it has had for over 10 years. It’s difficult to know what direction to take with it, but it has a large trunk. So maybe this umbrella or lollipop style prune would work. It’s a hot mess.
You are welcome. Good luck with it and let me know if you have any questions. I also put up a few videos on deadheading, or how to pick off the spent flower seeds to keep it blooming it’s best. 🙏 happy gardening!
Beautiful 🙏☮️❤️
Thank you kindly
Love your planters that look old thank you for sharing 🙏❤️☮️ I wonder if using vermiculate and other mixers are reason why you do not use mustard oil on the plastic mold ( not a lot ) instead of plastic liner I only used plastic if need be to mold like metal basket.
Thank you. I use the plastic because the wrinkles and folds give the outside of the container a lot of character. Also pops out of mold super easy. Have fun gardening!
Lantana Camara is beautiful but leave it in the wild in the right condition and it will turn into a pest. In the Solomon Islands lantana has taken over hundreds of acres of coconut plantations. Without proper pest management, lantana infested areas will become unproductive and a wasteland.
You are 💯 right; in certain areas without winters lantana can be very invasive. Where I am in the northeast, lantana doesn’t survive the winter so it’s very safe to grow.
Can lantana topiaries survive being planted in-ground through winter in zone 5b?
They cannot in my experience. I’m zone 6/7 and they don’t survive. I haven’t tried wrapping them in a thick blanket so if you want to give it a shot, that’s what I would do. Just know it’s an experiment and it’s likely not to work.
Where did you get your fiber pots you use for a mold? I can't find any that are decorative like yours.
They were hanging baskets I use to plant up but the company stopped making them years ago so I only have 5 left I’ve kept for molds. They were very popular so I have no idea why they stopped producing them.
Neon would be spectacular! But all are beautiful 🤩
I agree! The neon is definitely the most vibrant of the 3 colors I’m doing this year.
Nice to see how you can add feet to these pots interesting to know how . have you ever added any?
I have before but it’s not for everyone so I don’t anymore. They make these little rubber feet you can buy on Amazon that work well for all sizes of pots. Super cheap so I tell people to use those. But if you are making one go ahead and try it out! Good luck and have fun 🙏
Where can I purchase a cram shell at?
The clamshell mold or the finished product? They don’t make the mold anymore and I could ship you one depending on where you live. Email me your address and I can give you a shipping price. I normally just sell them locally.

It’s sweet potato vine. Marguerite is the variety. FYI It is an annual.
