I found out how to do this on a smaller scale with a couple soup cans, a duct crimper, a tabletop smokeless fire pit, and a few handfuls of hardwood pellets. Makes perfect bone char in about 2 hours. I plan to scale this concept up to a larger smokeless fire pit and two #10 tomato cans that my favorite local Italian restaurant donated to me.

Wow who organized the analytical equipment and testing? This defies gravity and I can't figure out the feedstock input and output. The fire just looked like a standard fire and no gasification or pyrolysis involved.

Doesn't pine have a significant amount of turpentine in it? Is it sufficiently eliminated by the charcoal process that it doesn't interfere with the microbes inoculating the charcoal?

At high temperatures the turpenoids become volatile and become combustible.

Looks great, incorporating a clean burn system into the kiln enhances its environmental credentials, this ensures the combustion is efficient and complete, minimising the release of harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. Well done 👏

What's the highest temp it can hold? Or has held? Is it quenching as the char is leaving or as it is still in the base?

Good looking setup. Do you use an electric heater or something to maintain your temperature you set it at or is temperature just adjusted by air flow?

I put a couple buckets in my compost pile weekly and I’m seriously wanting to make biochar for the soil in my yard. I hadn’t considered the coffee going into the retort.

Maybe run the system on methane from a manure digester. This way would not be wasting any wood.
