    Man who has all this time. Also I like many expected probably a few rows cut with dull blade. Few with new and sharpened to show what the lawn actually looks like. I bet you have to resharpen the blade every few weeks to keep it that sharp. Which would be a nightmare. Just scrapping the darn underneath of a mower is annoying enough. I have a bunch of stupid walnut trees around my yard. This season had 10 times as many as I’ve ever seen. My blade took a beating.

    Summer trimming and pruning around our summer cottage usually takes about two days' work and with the pruner I had half of it done in a three hour morning. Took the rest of the day off and finished it off the next morning. Easily worth the $140ish (Canadian dollars) considering it effectively gave me an extra day to do things I want to do.

    I often sharpen new lawn mower blades. I use a 120 Cubitron linisher belt. This allows you to guide the blades with 2 hands. Much safer than using a flap disc one handed.

    I have been sharpening blade (smaller blade tips) for years. People pass by my house and see my lawn and ask about why its so even and green....I answer, "Highly modified lawnmower blades". They think I'm joking...but why does the lawn look so good??? I have found People believe whatever they want.

    Lawnmower blades are tempered to be tough but not brittle. If you hit a rock etc with a blade tempered like a file it would shatter. If you’ve ever tried to straighten a bent blade you’d see how tough they are.

  • @44hawk28
    @44hawk28 10 днів тому

    There is a way to make it hold that edge longer. That 30° Edge is a fairly durable angle. But sheet metal is not particularly well-tempered. If you take the paint off of that sharpened area and you heat it up to a fairly orangish glow and then you drop it into some water just splash it real quick and then watch it as soon as that steals starts to turn blue dump it back into the water and finish cooling it. You do that to both ends equally it will hold its Edge far better than just the regular sheet metal. I was a sheet metal mechanic for 41 years. I could take tools that were going very quickly when I was trying to pull welds apart or something like that. And make them where they could cut steel for quite some time before I had to just sharpen it quickly with a file. And once you have that very sharp edge it will sharpen with a file a bit more consistently.

    I've been mowing lawns since I was 11. As an adult I learned the importance of sharpening my mower blades. The mower cuts better, clogs less, and burns less gas. I buy spare blades and swap them out every third time I mow and save sharpening for a rainy day.

    Just bought a $6k zero turn. I had to sharpen all 3 blades. Saw the dealer one day in town and he asked me how I like my new mower. I said great except I had to sharpen all the blades because it was ripping the grass. He looked at me like I had 3 heads. Great video!

    Learned some things I did not know before. Only thing I disapprove of is that when grinding red hot it chips easier. What happens is that the steel loosens hardening, becoming softer. So it becomes dull faster. A historical note. Before lawn mowers existed, scythes was used. When harvesting, a stick with abrasives was always carried. Used several times a day to keep the blade sharp.

    There’s a reason golf courses sharpen every day.. That being said, on any non-reel mower, only about one inch of the blade is cutting any grass and sharpening any further and sharpening any steps is a waste of time. The steps are marketing gimmick.

    To be fair any bypass style cutter is meant for green wood. I'd bet a pull or two on a green branch it'd go right through. I use a similar tool in my vineyard, it'll cut max capacity on green wood no problem, but old dead wood it's only about 2/3 of the max. My only beef with the DeWalt is there's no way to reduce the cutting diameter, which would increase speed & battery life.

    Request: Just sharpen your blade using a cutoff wheel. Then take it out and mow and show us just how terribly imbalance that blade is. My point is I do this all the time and Brrrrrrrrr smooth cutting is what I get. How much would you need to imbalance that blade and how bad would you need to be at sharpening to really make any difference, Also...Try sharpening just the end 1 inch and dull up the rest. of the blade badly. Also no non-turn tool is needed as a dowel or stick or a block of wood will work wedged between the blade and the exit chute.
