Hello! I’m a newly-retired, former Iowa farm gal who became a Master Gardener to tap into my passion for ‘digging in the dirt’. I believe getting outside and growing things is a great way to get exercise, relieve stress and learn from nature. I’m glad you’re here and look forward to celebrating the seasons and challenges of growing a wildlife-friendly cottage garden in dry shade, clay-heavy, Zone 5b!

Beautiful Garden ♥️
Great information. Thank You ! ❤❤❤❤❤
How are you
Hi 😊
It is a huge job to get house plants back inside! And then you need to know where the best light levels are for each variety. I'm so glad I have a small attached greenhouse and I can regulate the supplemental lighting to keep them blooming all winter. Even so, I donate a lot of my excess plants to the master gardeners for their spring sale, and take cuttings to give away to friends.
I have only succulents to bring in but a lot, I’m overwhelmed thinking what I need to do just now. Any easier way of doing this besides doing all of your suggestions. I think if I have only a few I can do this.
Eliza, if you have to tackle a bigger project or have many plants, try just scraping the top of the soil of the plants, looking for pests, and wiping the outside of the pots of your succulents-you’re taking out the risk of most of the pests that live in the soil that way. You can also spray a pet-safe pesticide that you can get from your local garden store to further reduce the risk of pest infestation. Succulents aren’t as prone to fungus gnats and other pests, simply because they prefer drier soils. So you’ll probably be fine. Try just moving a few plants in at a time, because any big job, tackled in ‘manageable bites’ is best! Good luck!
@@MilkweedsNRosesGardener Thanks. I know the pots are big and can be heavy.
You could also consider taking cuttings to grow in a different pot inside then bringing out again next year.
I am in zone 8b.. our frost date is not close but I cleaned repotted many today.. thanks for the video!
It’s a nice feeling to get ahead of a big job though, so good job, you!
Beautiful 🫶
Love your show
Thank you!
Great tile! UA-cam loves How To videos!
I keep tryin’. Who knows?
Im not in your zone but your videos are informative for me , a new gardener. Thank you !
Same zone here 🇨🇦! My front garden has milkweed, lavender, ladies mantle, irises, rose of Sharon, zinnias, marigolds, globe thistle and a rose bush. Love the pollinators that come for a visit.
Thanks Laurie!! Good advise! Thx
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Can we say mid to late summer flopsies??? LOL! Please don't rush my summer...LOL! This is the reason I don't get Petunias anymore. It does help to trim them up a bit.
True! Yes, I’m not ready for it to be Fall (and technically we should have a month yet). Petunias frustrate this time of year!
I’m zone 5b too. My koi live outside all winter, they go hibernate
You're lucky! You must have a deeper pond.
Beautiful looking garden, pots and waterfall, they are the bees knees.
Hey thanks!
I recognized your face and you had a gardening video so of course I clicked on it!! Your garden is beautiful!! I set my houseplants out for “summer camp” as well, they love it! You still have a healthy Ash tree? You have bunnies, I have deer that think my hostas are salad! Looking forward to future videos!
Our ash tree sheds leaves now when it storms. We get it treated, but I fear its years are numbered! No deer, but we BOTH have bunny issues!
Shut up karen let me sleep
Enjoyed your film, grandson sleeping here. Lots of variety in your planters. Like the yellow golf whimsy !!
Mine are tiny , from seeds , fabulous flowers 🌺
The power of seeds is amazing, yes?
Looks good! Love the ajuga too. Black scallop is one of my favorites.
it IS beautiful and so reliable!
Beautiful looking garden and beautiful roses, They are the bees knees.
Yes they are!
Spring has sprung, and you are beautiful, Laurie!❤ Take care
We moved to another house @ easter time, with egg hunting was a $100 bill in a golden egg. Even we cleaned the whole house every year, nothing. Days later 2 or 3 years after, one of the kids found it. Founders keepers. That day was hilarious!😅
sounds like good memories!
Finally found that last Mother***** Easter egg after 2 months!

Do you also plant luffa's?
I haven't tried that yet. You?
@@MilkweedsNRosesGardener I planted three of them, they are growing, I think my plant is 5 months old now.

Ahhh❤😊🎉
Greeting's from Ireland, great video and lovely garden. I grew up on a small dairy farm in rural Ireland and when I was eighteen I went to work in Dublin where I met my wife. Twenty years ago we bought a small cottage in rural Ireland and my wife wanted a front garden bed. I had no interest in gardening even though my mother loved flower gardening and my father grew veg. Anyway I dug out the bed and then my wife bought some plant's and wanted me to help her plant them and so I did. When those flowers started blooming it ignited a spark in me and off I went digging and digging and planting and planting. Now we have four flower bed's and fifty seven pots in the front garden and a no dig garden veg garden and a glasshouse out the back. The funny thing is my wife has no interest in gardening but she knew if she got me started I might like It.
Just beautiful!
❤❤❤

Nice job! We need to have Sun do a tour, too. Great idea!
Sorry; music and speaking do not mix... 😮
The barred owl was so beautiful ❤ Such a treat to see it so close!
I think it's Outside Pride that has a mini clover that would work in the damp area instead of grass. Of course has the seasonal little blooms and is a nitrogen fixer. Invades just a tiny bit but is on runners that are super easy to pull. I don't even mow mine. Just edge the border.
Thanks for the info! And of course the rabbits would love the clover (would rather have them eat that, than my other plants!),
I’m zone 4B, working on changing my grass to clover and I love it. Great for the pollinators and the deer will eat it and tend to leave my plants alone 😅
@@Crazycatsx Sounds like a winner!
At 3:52, where did you find your gardening stool? I have major spine, neck. Issues. This appears doable. ❤
Oh gosh, I have to be honest-that’s an outdoor speaker. A Bose (hubby tells me-that’s his thing). The angle shown in the video makes it look like a stool but it’s just the speaker. Hope you find something that works--I have back issues as well. Take care!
Thank you. Another question ... where did you find your black arbor? Love your channel! @@MilkweedsNRosesGardener
@@LindaDavis-iq9zj It’s from Plow and Hearth. Ordered it online (my folks did, actually. It was a Christmas present). Cheers!
Where did you find your arbor? Perfection!
Thanks! I got it off of Amazon, but it’s from Plow and Hearth, the Montebello arch.
New sub from Minnesota. We say kla-mat-is, too! I need two clematis to climb an arbor with my roses. I just bought a rhodie recently. I tried one a few years ago and it disappeared without a trace from my garden by the following Spring. Strangest thing ever! So fingers crossed this time 'round. 🤞 Love your waterfall and the cottage house on top. I've got a sizable collection of houses the same size as yours, but I've never thought of placing them in the garden. How fun! I use them for a snow village in the house. Love the name Milkweed & Roses, btw! We used to have rabbits clipping off our tulips blooms and leaving them where they fell. So maddening! Our solution was putting up a green 4 ft wire fence for a few seasons and then took it done. We haven't had trouble since. Did you have a mild winter in Iowa? Our winter in MN was probably the mildest ever recorded. We got a taste of what a southern winter must be like hitting 70F in February and loads of 50's from Nov - Apr!
So good to hear from you! I like the idea of putting up a fence until the rabbits get so frustrated they learn to find food sources elsewhere. Yes, it was such a mild winter (except for a couple weeks of -20) but I see plants coming back that previous years didn’t show up in the spring. So, we’ll see. Yes, the rhododendron is looking good. Fingers crossed it all works well! Happy gardening!
What a beautiful garden!!!! To have the pond and trees as a starting point is so fortunate. I loved borrowed landscape, but it can definitely bring challenges. Looking forward to seeing how you handle it all. My neighbor had a huge electrical box in the front yard next to my drive way. It was an eyesore for sure. I put in a section of white picket fence in front if it, and with her permission painted the box hunter green. Then I planted in front with some climbers. Problem solved!
Love that idea!
🤩🤩😍😍
Another ponding season!
I love it!
I put my clematis in an arch last year the only problem was all the blooms were on top of the arch so I didn't get to see them like I normally do. I had envisioned blooms all up the arch and in top. I moved the arch this year and put a trellis back in place.
What type of clematis is it? Does it bloom early (on old wood) or late season (new wood)? Or a combo? I have all three types and the flowers come on different parts of the stems, depending on what type of clematis I have and (frankly) how bad my winter was that year. I hope you have better luck with your blooms this year!
