This is only for those very interested in determining the best net result in gaining calories of food that can be stored... assuming human labor or farmed fuel oil. It is not for the impatient. For those who wait and follow, it is a rich presentation of an analytical approach we can apply to our own research and a solid analysis. End result, if you are only eating the carbs produced and not raising animals you need about 26,000 square feet under tillage per person to get the gross calories. PLEASE edit this video with the slides inserted. We, the Internet audience, missed a lot because we could not see the slides.

Couldn’t you reverse the process in the Summer so that you’re blowing and storing cold air into your rock bed at night to cool down the greenhouse during the day? Obviously not then ideal compared to a normal greenhouse, but expanding DWGs to year-round growing is important to make best use of the asset to communities and growers.

Please tell us why the Farm Services Agency suspended farm loan guarantees? We are ready to close on 4 poultry farms in Arkansas but as of April 10, 2023 the bank said FSA has put a hold on farm loan guarantees so we can't close until they get the all clear from FSA and no one can say when that will be. Please tell us when that will be lifted? We have several farms waiting to close. People have sold their homes, buyers and sellers have U-hauls loaded, the sellers are being pressured by the integrators to put in another 7 week flock because we can't count on FSA anymore and the mortgage payment still needs to be paid ...

Is it true the FSA is about to pay off loans for contract poultry farmers who are not earning enough growing chickens for the huge poultry companies? $3.1 billion in funding for USDA to provide relief for distressed Farm Loan Program borrowers with at-risk agricultural operations. $2.2 billion in financial assistance for farmers who have experienced discrimination in USDA farm lending programs, by amending Section 1006 of ARPA.

Yes you are considered a Majority. Best bet is to try using your wife as the minority or, if you have filed a Schedule F, Profit or loss from farming operation, in 3 of the past 10 years, or 2 yrs if a Vet, or if you have a degree in AG or related, you might get up to $600,000 Direct Down Payment assistance loan at a lower rate through FSA, about 4.5% interest rate right now, and your lender will loan the balance needed. (Most lenders will still want the buyer to come up with around 5% of the purchase price, down payment. Many lenders will not require the FSA Guarantee on the bank's money if the buyer comes in with more than 20% of the purchase price for the down payment). Lenders like this because the Gov, USDA allows the Bank to hold the 1st mortgage position so the taxpayer will take the loss if the loan were to go belly up. I have been selling poultry and cattle farms in AR and OK for 42 yrs. Be prepared to wait 6 - 10 months for your FSA Guaranteed loan to close since "FSA is very short handed and over worked". Just the process of FSA doing a farm appraisal will take 6 weeks. The "FSA down payment assistance loan" is to help the buyer, while the "FSA Guarantee" that guarantees 90% of the lender's money, protects the lender's money, but the buyer will be required to pay the fee, added into the loan. Some lenders will require the buyer to provide a life insurance policy naming the bank as the beneficiary and may also include a 5 year Pre-payment penalty.

Most often it is for people like me who put our lives on hold to serve in the military for close to a decade while providing for a family of four on an income that is less than the current minimum wage- who earned their honorable discharge, then went to college for six years to study crop science at the graduate level, but were unable to save up the 50k in down payments necessary to start a family farm that can realistically only profit in the tens of thousands annually. Of course, everyone could go work for minimum wage for some industrial scale bastard who relies on subsidized crops and government backed insurance programs to line their own pockets- but that's somehow less appealing to me. Though something tells me you missed the part about having years of relevant (taxed) experience to even apply for these programs... But, as they say, ignorance is bliss, so have a wonderful day.

I saw the promotional video for Humble Hands Harvest and I'm certainly pleased to see their innovation and no-till being implemented (I used to work for NRCS), why is LGBTQ even relevant here? As long as you're making quality food at your CSA, I couldn't possibly care less. Promoting it and featuring it as an aspect of farming feels artificial and desperate. It seems contrived. Just be a quality organic farmer who takes care of the soil and the rest will follow. You'll have more success if you DON'T highlight your orientation. I detest when businesses feel compelled to highlight or showcase their social responsibility or "wokeness".

Hi Josh, thanks for your question. We are unwavering in our belief that visibility and representation are critically important. Being visible means being able to bring your whole self and sharing your whole story. And sharing those stories can have really monumental impacts, from influencing policy (we can't find solutions if we don't know problems), to inspiring a new generation of farmers (when I see myself represented, I feel a sense of belonging; a feeling that this is a space for me, too). Centuries of systemic oppression in the U.S. has resulted in an extremely homogenous population of farmers: as of 2017, 64% of farmers were men and 94% were white. So, to your question: this is relevant because farming is for everyone--it's not just for white men, even though that's historically who has been allowed to be a farmer/landowner in this country. The future of farming we want to see is one in which everyone is welcome, everyone is represented, everyone feels a sense of belonging. That's why visibility is important. - Jenica C.
