In 1902 the Wright Brothers made what is regarded as the first successful flight. That milestone was accomplished after years of earlier experimentation modeled on the mechanics and dynamics of birds in flight. During the following decades, hundreds of other engineers and “engineer wannabes” joined the race to develop efficient flying machines. In the meantime, many people lost their lives in successive crashes of different models. Even so, the goal of “human flight” was never abandoned. Once it was discovered that flight was based on thrust rather than on the flapping of wings, the development of the airplane moved from piston engines to turbine or jet engines (and as they say, the rest is history). Such kinds of development would never have been accomplished without the willingness of interested parties to accommodate CHANGE. It was because of the failure of the directors of the company known as Research In Motion (RIM) to embrace change that the Blackberry telephone experienced its demise. As Professor Rex Nettleford et al note in their book “The Rastafari Movement In Jamaica” (1960), the Founding Fathers of RASTAFARI might have held that the two major tenets of the early movement were that “Ras Tafari is the living God, and that salvation can come to black men only through repatriation to Africa.” As most of the panelists have intimated, after almost 100 years of propagating such “wings flapping” beliefs, many adherents of RASTAFARI have begun to show a readiness for revisiting such early ideas. Repatriation could never take place until AFRICA truly exists as a country rather than as a continent fragmented into some 52 Eurocentrically instituted “states”. Furthermore, repatriation to Africa must be understood both from a mental and a physical standpoint. It is also heartening to note that this panel has embraced the need for Rastafarians to take up the POLITICAL mantle. The theological considerations relating to the deity of the Emperor must also come under serious scrutiny. What is needed now is urgent action to organize and centralize at the international level since our Western-trained politicians could never be relied upon to realize the goal of AFRICAN UNITY; as espoused by His Imperial Majesty, Honourable Marcus Garvey, and other BLACK stalwarts. The phenomenon of RASTAFARI has spontaneously grown in exponential numbers. And so, nothing should be allowed to stand in the way of the Movement continuing to fully assert itself as a vehicle for articulating the COLLECTIVE experiences, hopes, and aspirations of the AFRICAN People.

While the efforts of Rastafarian sub-groupings like The Nyabinghi Order to propagate the Philosophy of RASTAFARI should be highly commended, it is disconcerting that an overwhelming number of adherents of RASTAFARI remain helplessly bogged down in the Judeo-Christian belief system. Every great belief system derives its polity from the preceding institution to which its founding fathers previously belonged. Since Prince Emmanuel and other original leaders of the Rastafari Movement were products of their Judeo-Christian upbringing, it comes as no surprise that their teachings were based on biblical doctrines. The matter is further complicated by the fact that the two cornerstones of RASTAFARI, viz. The Right Honourable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and His Imperial Majesty (HIM) Emperor Haile Selassie I were raised within the Judeo-Christian milieu. Even so, no serious Rastafarian should allow Himself/Herself to lose sight of the fundamental purpose (raison d’etre) of RASTAFARI. As HIM admonishes, BLACK People can overcome the obstacles to their development only by adopting an ENLIGHTENED approach to their overall situation. (Thus, given the inhumane history of Judeo-Christianity, and recently unearthed accounts of the authorship of the Bible, it is mind-boggling that BLACK People are finding it increasingly difficult to break the stranglehold Judeo-Christianity (and Islam) still have on their minds). Since the driving force of RASTAFARI is the RESUSCITATION of the AFRICAN Race (or the EMANCIPATION of BLACK People from mental slavery), common sense should teach every adherent of RASTAFARI that the very institution that has been instrumental in subjugating the AFRICAN People could never be relied upon in bringing about their redemption. A wrecking ball could never be used to do the job of a hammer. Since Judeo-Christianity was and still is used as a wrecking ball to demolish the BLACK mindset, the time is long overdue for adherents of RASTAFARI to sever the navel string that continues to hold them hostage to the belief systems of their oppressors and set out on a genuine path to establishing RASTAFARI as an Indigenous, homegrown PHILOSOPHY dedicated to the provision of a vehicle for the articulation of the COLLECTIVE experiences, hopes, and aspirations of the AFRICAN People (“Wherever We May Be” - President Kwame Nkrumah). “UP YOU MIGHTY RACE, ACCOMPLISH WHAT YOU WILL.” (Marcus Garvey).
