Major Changes To Disney’s Disability Access Service (DAS) 2024 Explained
Disney has made some major changes to their Disability Access Service (DAS). We explain the changes, why disabled guests aren’t happy, and possible alternatives.
One thing we forget to mention in the video is that Disneyland guests will have the option to register for DAS on site at a kiosk outside of the park, unlike Disney World who only has an online registration

We missed you guys❤
So glad to have seen you back on a stream and glad to see you guys. Enjoy the rest of your event tonight. 💜💚🖤
Thank you for the information. Unfortunately my daughter got denied DAS yesterday. And now we are considering canceling the trip.
Thanks for the heads up. Disappointing that the ride was not engineered to include wheelchair users. 😢
Just wanted to share a my opinion; not here to argue. Just an opinion or observation. The Tokyo Disney part of this video, the only thing I don’t agree with is the ability to not go on another ride while you’re waiting for the DAS ride you selected to open up in an hr or 2, or more. That’s nuts. Most of us who have both mental and physical disabilities don’t need a list of rides lined up after each other but we should be able to utilize at least one fast pass ride or stand by ride while we wait for our DAS to open up; especially if it’s a long wait. But I believe there should be limitations. And I don’t like the idea of Disney who has their fingers in everything to also have my personal health information. I don’t agree with people who have abused this system because it’s just not morally right, on the other hand there should be limits set clearly so others do not idolize the DAS pass if it’s not necessary for them. Notice how this boom started when I started the Genie plus, which you have to pay additionally for. Though there might be a decent sized boom of arising disabilities especially after COVID, the previous fast pass system worked well; so that those who did not need the DAS service weren’t likely to request it, because they were able to get more than 3 rides in during their visit, which is no longer the case now. This whole thing is from abuse on the system after Disney got greedy and wanted to charge people for a free service, and a high charge I might add; especially for something that doesn’t work as well as it should. This whole thing is so wrong for the Disabled community that are in need of service to make their stay at the parks more enjoyable. We are going this month and I am beyond stressed out because we don’t have the finances for extra Genie Plus services for each pass that don’t already work well, and I shouldn’t have to stress about the possible issues might arise during my Disney stay; it’s supposed to be a Vacation from the outside world for yourself and loved ones. Yet here we are; I seriously wonder what Walt would do, if he truly cared, because this is not the Disney we Disney Adults grew up loving
Just another greedy multi-billion dollar company trying to get more money.
BTW.... it is against ADA to make a person prove they have a disability. No more Disney for me.
I am ambulatory wheelchair user. I can stand and walk very short ddistances but I cant stand or walk for a long time. I have FND(Functional Neurological Disorder), PTSD, anxiety, depression, and neuropathy. My body doesnt r3gulate heat well and due to FND, I am prone to sizures. Its sad that this is not a friendly, family experience for families anymore. If this doesn't change, not only will I not return to any of thier locations, I will no longer support them in merchandise or streaming app(s).
I’ve been waiting online for 4 hours for the interview. Thankfully I work from home. Not sure how people are supposed to wait around all day. Why not have a scheduled time? It times out every 15 min, so you have to stay active online the whole time. And every 30 minutes, you have to respond to an automated chat or it kicks you out of the queue. So sad and frustrating.
I have take many trips to Disneyland with the guest assistance card I would go to town hall and they would ask few questions about what type of assistance I need I explained I walked with a cane I didn’t have great balance that more than stair were a big problem, I ware compression wraps to help keep the fluids moving in my legs so standing in one spot for more than 20-15 minutes in a line with out movements can cause great pain, having places to sit down and get my warp adjusted they would stop the haunted mansion ride to allow me to get in and out I would use the elevator Indiana Jones ride to get to the start of the ride. I never used the Guest assistance card if the line was short or I didn’t need assistance to get on or off the ride The last time we was in Disneyland was 2019 with severe learning disability I was still using the more or less the old system, the only difference would be that they would actually scan my ticket and my party ticket to actually ride the ride and give us our return time. Now we are using are phones with DAS and light lanes
You weren't "wrong" bro. You were 100% righteous. Thanks for being willing to try again and sharing that with us.
Thank you both.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I will strive to be more aware in the things I impact.
It would be nice to not have to look through netting and bars the whole time.
Thanks for this. My arthritis is getting bad enough that I can't really do what I want anymore, and I'll need to start using assistance devices. Your great work helps me envision it.
As a disabled person unable to fully convey my disability verbally, I'd gladly give as much paperwork as needed to show proof of my disability. I'm waiting on my Universal Studios Hollywood accessibility pass call, but was approved within a day for my IAC card. Will try for DAS once I'm a month out from my date. I hope Disney adopts something like the IAC.
My daughter is 15 and has been using DAS since she was 5 years old do to her medical condition. This year they totally kicked her out and it has ruined her entire experience. She has had to fight through her condition just to be able to do a few of their rides and has had to return to our room because of their refusal to accommodate her. We loved Disney and appreciated and thought so highly of them for their support and treatment of our daughter. NOT ANYMORE… this is without a doubt our last trip to their parks. We have a granddaughter that we were intending to bring in the upcoming months, and now that’s a big fat NOPE. We will boycott their products, theme parks and motion picture. Good bye is how we part with friends. Good riddance is how we part with Disney. 😡
My daughter has a smart drive on her wheelchair to save her arms on long trip days.
That’s awesome. Ben recently got a smart drive too
Do you have to transfer or can you stay in your chair on the tram?
In a lot of cases you can stay in your chair. There may be some cases you have to transfer if they can’t lock down the wheelchair
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313 my daughter has the transit kit for public and school bus that the metal hooks go in and we lock her wheels. It is a manual chair but a high back.
I saw one video where a doctor suggested having checklists your doctor fills out to say what accommodations you need. I like that idea better than IBBCCES.
That does seem like less of a hassle but Disney will never accept medical information directly
They are horrible mobility vehicles. They are bulky, not just large, and are very slow to accelerate. They are not comfortable, and have no reasonable options for storage or shade. The slow acceleration makes them especially difficult when a person crosses in font of you and you have to stop to avoid them. Then the startup delay causes more people to go around you. I have literally been stranded in the center of a crowd as I could not have enough time to match the sleep of people around me. Luckily a man, not a cast member, held people back long enough for me to get going. And you still have to get from the parking structure to the entrance to Disneyland to get one. There is a handicap shuttle, that runs somewhat infrequently, that takes you to the middle of the tram exit area, but you still have to make it to the park entrance. And then there are the problems with handicap parking. 1) When they built Pixar Pals parking structure addition they took away flat parking lot handicap parking and put in ZERO handicap spots in the structure, none at all where you would otherwise expect them by the elevators. 2) There is little signage and very poor indicators for finding available handicap spots. 3) People without handicap placards or license plates often park in handicap spots with no consequences. Security staff will do nothing about it. And 4) Disneyland has designated some regular spots for handicapped only, rather than add actual handicap spots. They just put out a sawhorse style sign that says handicap only beyond this sign. But, people don’t care, they park there anyway for 2 reasons; they aren’t officially marked, and therefore there cannot be any legal consequences. Also, these spaces do not meet state laws and ADA requirements for handicap access. They are not wide enough, and a van ramp cannot be deployed in them. Disney has done nothing to address these failures. If you absolutely need a handicap spot, you need your get there first thing in the morning, or stay at a hotel nearby with your own mobility device.
We agree with all of this. The lack of disabled accessible parking spots in the Pixar structure is unacceptable. I don’t know how they get away with calling regular parking spots disabled accessible
I finally had the pleasure of seeing Maynard on my last visit to Disneyland, he was amazing! I only saw him that one time, but I am ever so grateful. Thank you Maynard.
Would you be open to doing an update? Our community is feeling quite anxious, sad, mad, confused… cast members are being rude, only giving a pass if the guest is autistic enough! Have a verbal audhd kid…too bad. Have crippling anxiety exasperated by this experience, oh well. My family has only been able to do Disneyland with das pass. My children are both autistic as am I. But we are verbal. The cm is insisting on interviewing my kids. They’re too young. Kids are being left a hot crying mess. This is all so devastating and we just don’t know where to go from here. Disneyland is no longer keeping me stress free. Which was the whole reason we became passholders. It was the only park we could go to where all of our disabilities were accommodated for. We have the documentation. We have the IBCCES cards at universal. I’m on the hook to keep paying my passes for close to another year and I can’t use them now. I’m gutted. Exhausted. Frightened for what is happening. We are being tossed aside. Disneyland doesn’t want us to come. I feel like I lost my best friend. And yes I have a strong connection to the parks. Is there anything you can do to help us?
We definitely will do an update if anything changes. We put out a call for stories people were willing to have us share in the DAS Facebook groups and on our instagram and didn’t get much of a response which is why we didn’t really include too many stories. We know how the disability community is feeling, we see it on social media. There is not much we can do as a channel beyond putting out videos, sharing information on our instagram and emailing Disney, which we have done. From what we understand Disney is listening more to emails than social media
I wouldn’t separate from a twelve year old child! That is crazy on Disney’s part!
Agree
I’m disabled and I don’t think I’ll even go back to Disney. We went several times, the last time in 2014. At that time, I used my rollator and could usually sit on the seat while in line. I have muscular dystrophy and pots which is progressive and I now require a wheelchair. It just really sounds like Disney could care less if the disabled are PROPERLY accommodated. Very sad! Also, to make a child explain their needs is so wrong! It’s hard for me to describe my own needs as an adult so this is really putting the burden on the child.
This is a amazing video thank you I am 21 and I got a medical disability and I have always gotten das but yes now I’m scared to go back and get denied and yes it does scare me when a cast member asks me to explain my disability I don’t fully know how to explain it that’s why my mom helps but my family we just renewed our passes before Disneyland das change and we kinda regret it now and don’t know what to do now I hope they fix this fast
So sorry for the anxiety this is creating for you. If you do decide to apply for DAS we suggest writing everything you want to say down beforehand to help you explain what you need to
Lets face it , we go to Goofys for the ENTERTAINMENT, not the food. Its ok at best. Nothing special, however the selection of food is crazy. We usually go to the breakfast or brunch. For the cost its fair to really? Its Disney, you pay to play, period. All and all, lots of fun and great memories. Hope you guys had fun. I think you did. See you soon. Great info vid. Keep em coming. P.S. really am a PLUTO Fanatic, he went overboard at our table. AS EXPECTED....HAD A BIRTHDAY ALSO...FUN
Very good point. Yes when we’ve been we generally have a good time and great character interaction
Could Disney provide a person transfer device like they have to lower ppl into a swimming pool? Would that help at all, just as a stopgap until a fully accessible vehicle is put online? It does seem risky and dangerous (I guess you proved that; hope your noggin is better) to make or expect you to adapt to the vehicle instead of the other way around. Very informative video. You guys are providing wonderful resource to everyone. Thanks so much.
Thank you. Good idea but that kind of device would probably take too much time to load someone into a ride vehicle and would be difficult for someone with less mobility because you would have to be able to slide yourself out of the lift
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313 I guess the buoyancy of a pool with no restrictions around it would be a big factor in why it works in that particular instance (if indeed it does). Here you’d be going from one hard-sided environment into an even more restrictive zone. It’s up to Disney to adapt itself to you. I hope they get on it soon. Sounds like you liked the ride itself. Haven’t been to the parks in years. To give you an idea of how long it’s been, it was on a day they offered unlimited fast passes or free entry to the park for anyone having a birthday! I took the free entry, of course. ;) They were building carsland at the time. ;) One of these days I want to see and hear “Sha-boom” in person. La la la la
Everyone should be able to choose when they need to use an accommodation. It is meant to be a way to have the same experience as a none disabled person. It is unfair to force someone to use the accommodation when they do not need it. A 10-minute wait is much different than a 3-hour wait. They should be allowed to spend time not waiting in line they are not able to do as they wish.
This just gets added to the long list of what Disney has been doing wrong the past 5 years... First it was the trafficking that was happening two years ago. Several employees got arrested. Second there was the brainwashing training program that got leaked. Third and this happened last week that Disney discriminates white people when hiring people which I find disgusting. Now this... Discriminating against disabled people. That's exactly what it is. It's disgusting. Both my husband and I are disabled. Learning disabled and physically disabled. I can't do stairs and I need to use a elevator when getting to places. My husband has autism. How would we be able to prove that we have disablities? It's impossible unless we hand over our medical charts. It's insane... Disney has been going downhill for a while now but this crap is a whole new low for them.
Thank you for sharing your opinion with all of us. I am a lot older than both of you. I grew up in Monterey California, which is just north of LA by 4 to 5 hours. I used to go to Disneyland starting back in 1970 since I was five years old, My parents would take us to Disneyland every other summer… I do understand that the population of the world and here in the United States has gotten bigger, so of course more people are going to be going to these parks. I eventually moved to the Orlando Florida area from 2002-2014 and and now recently moved back to Florida in December of 2022. I remember an annual pass back in 2002 was $246 that included all the water parks and mini golf and now in 2024 I’m paying $1,400 a year for my Icredi Pass….I’ve been loyal to Disney World now for over 20 years here in Florida, I am a disabled combat veteran of The 82nd Airborne Division and served The Invasion Of Panama and The first Gulf War Desert Storm…My father, was also a disabled combat veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars both of us have PTSD and anxieties and I was just turned down by the video DAS program just like you said after all of these years of being loyal to Disney and it is like you said it depends on which cast member and their personal thoughts of how they want to handle and deny or not deny an individual with disabilities! I say If they have proof people are abusing it they need to ban those people for life. I agree! I actually moved back to Florida having a house built and knowing that I was going to live close to Disney and be able to go to these parks, but after being denied after I explained to the member at DAS that I cannot be in tight places or in line too long before I start to have an anxiety attack and I was still turned down so boycotting Disney is possibly the first step, but it has to be a large majority of the disabled community bottom line this is about money with Disney they have gotten so greedy that now we’re paying $1,400 for an annual pass if they had kept up with inflation since they open the park in 1971 when I was six years old, the American people right now should be paying less than $50 per theme park but this is about greed nothing else and that’s my thoughts and my opinion Disney is going to get theirs through Karma! That will humble Disney eventually when people cannot afford it anymore and they start losing money. The real sad part of it is even their executive have in resent years said that as long as people pay, they will keep raising prices so again it’s going to take a boycott or for people to stop paying these outrageous prices in order to humble Disney!….as for the DAS program a lot of people such as myself are going to continue to be denied as long as there are cast members that are not educated to understand each individuals disabilities!
My mother is seventy nine and we have been passholders for 21 years. Since DAS began she has utilized a form of the program once she turned seventy due to mobility and other health concerns like IBS and diabetes . I was a landscaper and ruined my knees about 2017 and had mobility issues and qualified as well for DAS. I stopped using DAS after my knee surgeries in February. We used the system as intended as an assistance. I don’t feel we abused the system. We often did shop or get food/ snacks while we waited for our return time. With this latest changes and the reservation system we have decided as of the beginning of October we will not be renewing Magic Key and will be ending Disney + as well.
To say that these changes suck is an understatement. DAS was a literal lifesaver when I had a medical emergency during my 1st ever trip to DisneyLand this year. The CM's were courteous and understanding of the situation and recommended DAS for the day and future trips.I have multiple congenital conditions that contribute to not being able to stand/walk for short periods (30 minutes) without taking a break along with low stamina. My Doctor even agreed that it was something that I needed. I do think it's sad that I wouldn't be to add my friends to the new DAS, who are essentially family to me, and would need to be there to call anyone if a medical emergency leads to me being unconscious. Have a trip in August, if I'm denied I won't renew my magic key. Likely will do the same with Disney+, it's a shame because I was starting to like Disney and thought the parks were very accommodating for disabled people such as myself. It will unfortunately take someone either having an emergency or died because they couldn't wait virtually with DAS before anything changes.
I have disabilities and I shouldn't get DAS. Most physical disabilities can be accommodated with a wheelchair, if they are too bad for that then shouldn't be on most rides because it is a liability. My special needs child has severe mental disabilities and co-occuring physical disorders. Both are not going to be remedied with a wheelchair or something like that. If we can't get DAS for our child we won't be going...that's the solution unfortunately. Which of course Disney doesn't want...they want our money. My family does spend a LOT going with our passes. But for us that's the reality. Even using DAS on a good day with shorter wait times, is not like a vacation for most. My grandmother for example, with her disabilities, would feel like she's on vacation with limited worries etc. With our situation it's always an increase, major pros and cons that are unique to my child's situation. (Trying to be vague so people can't LIE and use these specifics). It's tiring to caretake too, but Disney with DAS and their understanding makes it so we can have a somewhat safe place to go and enjoy our time (hopefully). In the past few years many people that do seem to abuse DAS...my child looks completely normal at times. So I get the visibility thing. The difference is many people that seem to have obvious issues, and are just sitting in a wheelchair and blocking up lines is not ok. Maybe they have a combo of disabilities but we saw a very specific looking group of people (I'll just say it- obese) and they were making the wait waaaaay too long for a ride. So we left the parks. Our DAS wasn't worth it when we had to already wait 45+ minutes and then got to check in and they had us waiting another 25+ minutes in line and wouldn't make any concessions. WE couldn't justify staying. Not because we don't WANT to...we wish our situation was a case of being able to begrudgingly and perhaps a little uncomfortably wait in a long line...but we had to leave before our whole weekend was ruined. If you know, you know. That's basically what it's seemed to come down to. It's way too expensive to pay for tickets or passes that allow summer visits....so we won't be going until fall but I am hopeful we will still get DAS
To say most physical disabilities can be accommodated by a wheelchair is an over generalization and just untrue. To say that these DAS changes in any way relate the DAS issue to people sitting in wheelchairs and blocking lines doesn’t hold up because Disney generally hasn’t ever given DAS to people in scooters or wheelchairs if that is their main issue. The DAS changes are due to Disney’s new Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi pass program
Has it ever occurred to you that some obese people are obese because their physical limitations do not allow them to live an active life?
I don’t know if someone can answer this question, I have been to Disney many times in past years, but it’s been quite a while since I’ve been there. What I need to know is being blind, a considerate a disability that could get accommodation in the past, it was but it sounds like to me that that’s no longer the case and if so, I guess I will be going to Universal! So if anyone knows the answer to this, I’d appreciate, a comment thanks
The only way for you to know if you qualify for accommodation is for you to contact Disney. Two people with the same disability may have different outcomes because it’s not based on your disability they want to know why you can’t wait in a queue
I think you have a lot of good points when you speak of first hand experiences. However, you quote and use a lot of information gathered from social media, which as we all know, is typing, it's not always accurate and highly embellished. On both sides of this. You quote info from a lawsuit, which is great, its solid information and fact. A lot of the "posts" and such you reference a lot of times is opinion. Once again very good video, but I hope we can get real information that's facts vs. people's opinions and recollections or hurt and upsets rants.
We sent out requests for people to share their stories in the video on our social media (I am also an admin on a DAS group). We didn’t get much of a response which is understandable due to how heated this discussion can be. We tried to use just a couple anonymous stories from a DAS group I admin however I will tell you there are an overwhelming number of these stories that all sound similar. That plus my own experience trying to get accommodations at Disney give the stories credibility to us. Do what you will with the information provided
I just don't get why they didn't at least give a grace period for already booked trips. We've booked our honeymoon for this fall a year ago. we're flying in from Switzerland and wouldn't ever have booked without DAS. And now I don't know if I'll be able to handle the lines. If I don't get DAS, we won't even be able to get our money back 30 days before the trip :/
I’m so sorry. Well they did increase the time period to apply for DAS to 120 days before your trip. Maybe it you apply that far out you can get money back still if you’re denied
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313 ooh interesting, I just went to their app a few minutes ago and it said 30 days in advance, but valid for 120 days. I'll check directly on the homepage to make sure!
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313 as far as I can see, it's only 30 days out but valid for 120 days. But maybe the app isn't updated yet?
THE MORE I HEAR THE MORE I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK TO DISNEYLAND AS SOMEBODY WITH DISABILITIES THAT'S A WHEELCHAIR USER MYSELF THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I WANT TO DEAL WITH
We hear you. This is becoming the common opinion of many people with disabilities

I don’t understand why there is not a medical verification system. If I want an accommodation at work due to my disability, there is a form that my doctor fills out - it outlines my job requirements (ie lifting 25lbs) and asks my doctor is I can or can’t do the task and if I can’t, could I do it with an accommodation and is so, what I would need. Your doctor could detail what you can and can’t do at the park and what type of accommodation you need. This would weed out abusers of the system and allow folks to have some sort of permanent status/card so they don’t have to go thru the process every time. I do think it’s a good idea to have a cap on the number of folks that use a disability access program (whatever type it is). If there are too many folks trying to access the accommodations, it defeats the purpose.
I think we kind of covered some of the reasons they don’t have a medical verification system. Disney doesn’t have a HIPAA compliant way to store people’s medical information. The third party company Six Flags and Universal uses for medical verification is the subject of a couple lawsuits right now, which is probably why Disney didn’t go that route
A cm should escort the disabled person back in the line.
We agree. Making the disabled people do it alone creates an unsafe situation
My autistic 30 year old son and I are going the end of August. We have always used DAS for him. This new das has given me so much anxiety because I've heard that autistic adults have been denied and only small ones are approved. I've managed to save up for a couple days of genie+. I know that's what they would tell us to do. This new process is so wrong. I can't believe Disney is treating the disabled community, no matter your issues, the way they are. Disney should be ashamed😢💔😢
I’m so sorry you have to deal with this. I have a nephew who is 38 years old and has autism as well. The only way Disney’s going to hear us is by everyone boycotting them eventually because eventually hard-working Americans are not going to be able to afford it and Disney World will be only for the rich and the foreigners that come from other countries shame on Disney for treating the disabled this way over money!!! I hope that they do change their rules!
I heard ASD diagnoses are being approved fairly easily. The new policy is being geared more toward approving “cognitive disabilities” like ASD and not physical ones
@reginafallangie2867 there are plenty of adults and children with ASD and cognitive disabilities being denied DAS and some who don’t have ASD or cognitive disabilities are being approved. They aren’t asking for a diagnosis just why you can’t wait in line so it has nothing to do with ASD
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313 like I said, I’m going by what I’ve heard, from numerous individuals. That Disney’s new DAS focus was more on “cognitive disabilities” vs physical. It seems a disproportionate amount of justification being accepted is along those lines, more so than those even with very significant physical disability or diagnoses. Again, from what I’ve heard.
I think your idea of limiting the daily number of rides is a good compromise and even perhaps a small fee for the DAS pass say $15 or $20 one time. Disney is experiencing inflation like everyone else. I wish they would just be honest about it.
Anyone that blocks someone from returning to the line should be banned for life.
We agree
Thank you for making this video. It really is a shame that Disney has decided to make these changes to the DAS. Last year was my first full vacation to Disney World in 10 years. I have Crohn's disease and was very worried about getting "trapped" in long queues and suddenly have to use the bathroom. I wasn't sure if I would be eligible for the DAS but it was. It eased a lot of my anxiety during the trip. Being able to walk around the park freely during our wait time was great. Unfortunately now I definitely would not be eligible and I know that "return to queue" system is going to be a literal disaster. People are going to be passing out and crapping their pants in queues all over.
You’re welcome. We agree this is going to be a disaster for sure.
Great job explaining this issue. This whole mess is sickening to me. Disney needs to rethink how they treat their disabled customers. Maybe there needs to be a day without disabled attend all Disney parks.
Thank you. That’s definitely an interesting idea
Because they are trying to limit people that DON'T need DAS. ......? It's not a privilege for people that have disabilities that don't WANT to wait, perhaps are a bit more uncomfortable vs the average person........it's for people that legit can have a whole day or more ruined from the wait conditions combined with their specific disability needs. If you know you know.
Great to see you both!!!!
Thank you for this thoughtful video. There is no easy answer to this situation and I understand Disney trying to accommodate the growing disability population and stop the abuses of the program. I feel Disney needs to invest in properly helping the disabled community by getting the community involved to improve access for those with all disabilities. It's great seeing you two again! I hope Ben is getting better!
Yes just like with our Toontown fiasco it’s clear disabled people themselves are not involved in the process
Thanks so much for this thorough, thoughtful video. I’m a new subscriber. I have 2 kids with autism. I think using IBCCES would be an improvement. It would eliminate total fakers, so the rest of us would have more credibility, and Disney would have an accurate count of the number of guests who really do need accommodations (to your point that the community is growing). The suggestion that people who are denied should just get out of line and ask a cm to get back in is just ridiculous. It’s exactly what the das was meant to prevent.
Thanks for subscribing. Glad you enjoyed the video.
IBCCES would only work for one subset of disability, though. It's not a global solution.
@jphanks curious who this would not work for
I agree IBCCES is a superior system to what Disney is using, it is detailed enough to get to the bottom of what they need to know to see what assistance you need, it not only wants a dr note but you need to provide all information for the doctor including their prescriber number (NPI), any medications you may be taking it really is much more comprehensive and a much more respectful process than what literally is coming down to begging cast members over video to recognize your limitations with your disability like what is happening at Disney
Did you guys ever get an official response about this?
Just that they were going to pass on our feedback to corporate
Disney isn't required to follow HIPAA. But, if they start collecting documentation, then they would be, and that's a whole can of worms I doubt they would want to open. As long as a letter from a doctor doesn't include medical details, they would avoid HIPAA. Pre-DAS, I used a variety of aids, wheelchair, ECV, cane. Cast members were always accomodating. My disabilities aren't just mobility, so the system worked amazing. Up the exits, back door elevators, extra boarding time, holding my cane and my medical for me at the ride car. Then I saw people offering to take parties "using my gimp pass" to cut the line - for a fee! I saw a dude charge a family of four $200 to take them around for the day! I was mortified. To be honest tho, I also see many people who believe what DAS offers to be an entitlement. Like, a type 1 diabetic child - the mother demanding DAS because her child "could go low" and have an emergency. So they need to get through the lines very fast. Uhm.... to this day I'm also type1 diabetic and I adjust my insulin and carry snacks like I do every other day of my life. How do you survive a long day when there is no DAS? A medical diagnosis doesn't mean a disability. I'm not judging invisible illnesses at all - I'm talking about people who refuse to take personal responsibility for their health and their fun, and expect Disney to accommodate them.
That’s exactly what I was saying in the video. They don’t have a HIPAA complaint way to store health information if they started asking those questions. We won’t be debating which disabilities are deserving of DAS and which aren’t. We know people with type 1 diabetes who are very afraid of losing DAS and passing out in line. It can make people more susceptible to heat stroke for example
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313 that's part of my point. Sun and heat exposure are risky for some medical conditions. But those who choose not to apply their everyday mitigating tools to Disney trips - that's where the issue is.
@@jphanksnot going to debate who should qualify. I have extreme heat sensitivity myself. I use “mitigation tools” (two fans, a cooling towel, neck, fan, umbrella) and still overheat. We fortunately can avoid going when it’s hot as Magic key holders but not everyone can avoid it if they are going for summer vacation with family for example. We believe if Disney used the third party company that can collect medical documents that it’s a person’s doctor that should be making the determination if someone needs DAS, not you or I
@@adventuresbeyondadversity3313I see your point on the third party. I didn't quite understand it in the video. Thanks!
Thanks for this! I miss seeing you at the park!🙂
We miss you too Tomera. We’ll be back eventually
I feel like the abundance of “abuse” of the system is just an excuse to cut the service or a catered response to non-disabled complaints. I know I’ve heard several people complain it’s not fair I get on the bus first, despite the fact it’s a safety issue and there’s special disabled mobility device spots they couldn’t sit in anyway. I heard another person complain that they needed to charge their phone when I was charging an oxygen unit and other outlets were available. Another complained the chef spoke to me and not them (bc I have a special diet). Some people will always be mad at any accommodation they don’t get and unfortunately, will complain loudly to management. As a DAS user that is visibly disabled, I often have fellow disabled people divulge their health info to me. It’s never been anything that was a stretch. So this wide-spread abuse seems weird to me. The DAS users are usually only a handful of people and the label seemed helpful to CMs bc they could spot more easily who needed accessible seating, ramps, boats etc. Once, when I tried to not use my DAS and went in a regular queue with a very short line, the CMs pulled me out of the line anyway and asked why I’m not using the DAS. So this doesn’t seem in the CMs best interest either. Plus most disabled people can’t ride every ride anyway. Every ride will not be accessible to everyone. Plus we usually need breaks to take care of needs. So I don’t see how we are going on riding sprees either even with DAS haha. This is all so frustrating. I don’t think I’ll plan on going to Disney until this is resolved. I can only think of like three queues I might be able to without DAS (steam boat, hall of presidents and journey into imagination😂).
