All About Score Study: learn your music faster, without your instrument!
Thank you for the video!! is it necessary to have larger memory for reading the sheet music if I am going to keep them?
Thank you for putting yourself through this! I subscribed to ForScore pro years ago. It is not very expensive and helps to financially support the developer and keep the app updated. I love my AirTurn blue tooth pedals so it was interesting to see other brands.
You should give the Soundslice sheet-music scanning feature a try...! Works well for all sorts of instrumentation.
does this app work on busking short and lyric sheets, pdf and jpg sheets ?
Omg thank you for the “three dots” detail! I’ve been using forscore for four years and didn’t know about this 🤩
So glad it was helpful!!
ForScore is awesome!
I love it so much!
Nice!
Glad you liked it!
Thanks very much! Can you share set lists with other ForScore users?
This is great - thanks so much. Love your cat, too. I have not transitioned to using a tablet for performance, but I hope to soon. When I perform with sheet music on a stand, I have the upcoming page on the right of the current page so I can look ahead. Is two-page display an option with software like forscore, and how would the page turns work?
Hi there, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and my cat! :) I totally should have mentioned this in the video - there are two ways to see the next page in forscore: 1. Enable "half page turns". When you've reached the halfway point on the page you're playing, you can press your pedal (or tap the screen, or any other method you like to turn the page) and forscore will show you the top half of the next page and keep the bottom half of your current page on the screen as well. If you "turn the page" again, it'll show you the full next page. Then you can go on and on like that! 2. In landscape mode, you can change the display to show two or even three pages at once. to do this, go to the settings wheel to the left of the title of your score > Options > choose the first option, a rectandle with a vertical line in the middle. Long press, and you'll see the different spacing/layout options. I'll make a short on all of these very soon! I know these things are hard to explain through text.
I have had so much trouble because I think my jaw is in the wrong place or my clavicle or what the--? The Everest is my favorite so far, but even that, I can’t get comfortable. I do not demand great comfort, but it hurts. Then you said something that rang a bell because if I avoid my jaw, I can’t keep the instrument up. If I bring it around to my left, it hurts my jaw and I don’t know what I’m doing because it seems that the viola is very far from me. Then you said something about padding. I have been padding for years in odd places to not much avail. Don’t laugh, but I never thought of padding the shoulder rest. I can’t wait to try it. I have looked at that one that goes over the shoulder and what I have seen I could never afford. I will get back to you on this but thank you 100 times for suggesting something that never occurred to me. Linda

Hi Linda, thank you for your comment! I'm so glad this video was helpful for you! I think there are a few other shoulder rests that go over the shoulder. Maybe one of them would be in your price range, but either way, I hope that padding your current shoulder rest helps you! :)
If I exit the app, does the timer/metronome stop or it keeps counting?
The tuner and metronome will keep going if you switch apps! You can also use both the drone on the tuner and the metronome together at the same time.
I just bought an ipad air 11 inch and now I'm worried that is going to be too small😔 I'm a pianist too so i need to read to lines at the same time
I'd suggest using the iPad in landscape mode (sideways) and turn the page halfway just to use the screen space better. It'll make everything larger! If it's a big issue for you, maybe you could return it and get the larger air? Thank you for your comment, knowing how this works for a pianist is helpful for me to make better content!
@@ElizabethKnaub I bought it! I'm super happy, as someone who has never owned a tablet before , the size is absolutely fine. I have vision problems and the 11" have not bothered me at all. Of course I guess a bigger tablet is better when you usually read off paper, but even the smaller size feels huge. Also, I feel like getting a tablet has improved my motivation and improved my practice since I can write fingerings, notes or tips in my music even if it's late at night and there isn't any light. I would absolutely love a specific video about tablets for pianist or the 11" iPad air, when I was looking for recommendations for pianists, I barely found any. If someone is wondering if the 11" is worth it, personally, it is absolutely a 10/10
Hello, I want to ask friends... can the Poco Pad Tab be useful for music students or music students? Like the applications. Do you prefer just a laptop? Thank You halo, Mau tanya teman².. apakah Tab Poco pad bisa bermanfaat bagi mahasiswa seni musik atau pekerjaan musik gitu? Seperti aplikasi² nya. Apakah prefer laptop saja? Terima kasih
Hi there, thank you for your comment! I'm not very familiar with the Poco Pad Tab, but from looking over the specs, it seems like it would be a good budget option. The aspect ratio of the screen is 16.1, which is a bit skinny for reading sheet music. You may have to Zoom the music out a little bit and create larger borders on the top and bottom of your pages to be able to read sheet music in portrait mode, but since the screen is large, I would imagine it would still be easy to read. This tablet works with the Google Play Store, so you would have a huge variety of apps available to you!
@ElizabethKnaub can it be used for sibelius n ableton?
If you have a coating on your glasses it may interfere with the device reading the winking.
That’s good to know! Although it didn’t work for my fiancé either, and he doesn’t wear glasses.
Here I am watching the on the IPad mini 7th gen that just came out. I was just sight reading some Chopin on it and it’s definitely too small. Will exchange for the 11” Air M2 or do you think I should get the 13”? Would be for piano and vocal sheet music . I love the small form factor of the mini but thinking the 11” would be a decent middle point. Not sure if 13” is necessary but then again I have astigmatism
One of my viola students just got the 11 inch and is really enjoying it! I personally will always go with the largest size available for sheet music, just for the ease of reading. If you’re playing piano, then the iPad shouldn’t be that far away from you (at least compared to some other instrumentalists), but if you’re reading piano/vocal music that has 3 staffs per line, then I’m worried the music might have to be small to fit a whole page on the screen. You can always use the iPad in landscape mode and just have more page turns if your screen is too small. It’s a really personal decision, and I highly recommend trying them out in person if you’re near an Apple Store or maybe even a Costco or other store that has display models!
I have bought forscorepro for one year because I heard you can split pdfs. I did not find this feature until now, I still have 11 months to go...
Thanks god I am not the only one with problems with face gestures. On top of that you have to activate on every single score, how dumb is that?
Hi there! Is it possible to share a score with a friend that has the audio backing track attached? I have been scouring the Internet and UA-cam but cannot find a solution.
Hi there, I searched through forscore, but I couldn't find any way to share a score with attached audio. Maybe try sharing the forscore file - it might keep the metadata intact. If not, maybe reach out to forscore and suggest they add this as a feature! :)
Thanks, it's all good. I just recommend to learn how to spell the name of our favorite application correctly: forScore. Only in this way, wherever this word is located: at the beginning of a title, paragraph or sentence.
Great guide!
Glad it was helpful!
Your videos have helped me a lot. Been playing guitar, writing music for about 60 years. Obviously new technology has been a challenge. I play weekly with a group…have about 150 songs in my playlist. I’m losing my vision so I’m wanting to increase the font size/typeface/contrast settings in all songs which would make a 1 page song a 4 page song. Don’t know if that’s possible, or how to do it. I have a foot pedal (thanks to your video)0, so scrolling won’t be a problem. Is this doable? Could I increase the size of the songs on my playlist to full-size pages, losing the index, and then quickly be able to go back to the index? I know this is very long, but after watching tons of UA-cam videos, you’re the person I can follow the best. Thanks for your time. ( You’ve said you teach, how about “facetime” lessons?) ♥️
Much impressed. Thank you. I like presenters that are actually seriously knowledgeable of and very experienced with the subject matter of the video presentation. I like to see the primary emphasis on learning and I realize that the salesperson aspect should not be discounted. Bur in the end the presentation should be mainly about learning. Your presentation contains these simple but essential elements. Note that in the real world most great things can be found to be of plain and simple design. Upgrading my 5th generation ipad 10.5" purchased about 10 years ago, or so, I just purchased yesterday a new ipad. I purchased the ipad air 11" m2. I currently use my old ipad with piano midi apps and a Yamaha keyboard controller into a Yamaha mixer and JBL 5" nearfield powered monitors and the 10" JBL subwoofer. This sound system is great. Also great for guitar, plugging in a guitar and Boss Gt1 precessor pedal to the mixer (minus ipad). ... But now I can use Garageband, etc., with the ipad and the connected sound system, theoretically or I will find out. This has a built in usb interface like a keyboard. In regard to this video I myself am not a professional but rather an amateur hobbyist. Only recently have I developed expertise with midi piano and midi learning apps. I have lots of experience with guitar amplifiers. I find the sound of my high quality JBL sound system and high quality cables, and xlr cables, to be silent clear and beautiful within the home studio environment. I started using the ipad with the piano learning and instrument plug in apps about 1 week ago. Weeks of research and trial and error resulted in the successful connection of both my Yamaha keyboard and ipad via usb midi cable to midi learning apps. I was hung up by a Yamaha usb midi driver problem when attempting to connect the keyboard to 'smarrt piano' learning app. But Numa Player worked right away. One point stands out clearly: a performing muscian using ipad based equipment needs to definitely use very dependable equipment. Can't have computer devices crashing, etc. This is a priority and responsibility, of course. In addition the use of only high quality cables and adapters is very very important in keeping the noise level down. The use of trs cables and xlr cables will result in a much improved sound and less noise. I much appreciated your ipad video and recommend only using high quality peripherals with any ipad.
Hi there, thank you for such a kind and thorough comment! I loved hearing about what you do on your iPad. If you find any other apps you enjoy using, please feel free to share them with me in the future!! You’re absolutely right, musicians need to use reliable equipment that won’t crash during a performance or other high stakes situation. Performing is scary enough as it is! 😄
THANK YOU! Solved a HUGE problem.
So glad it helped!
I am pretty proficient with Finale software. Is there a comparable composing app for the Samsung?
Check out the app "Flat" on the Play Store, I've heard great things about it!
Very helpful, thanks! Great comparison between regular and pro, and I learned about some ForScore features I wasn't using.
Glad it was helpful!
I wanted to buy a samsung tab s9 fe+ since Ipads are too expensive, but I'm worried that it isn't wide enough (I'm talking about the 12.4 inches version) or that the apps on the playstore do not work well with me. What do you think? Is this model big enough? It is my first time trying digital sheet music so I would appreciate recomendations
The Tab S9 FE+ would be a great choice! The aspect ratio is very similar to a piece of paper, so I think it would work well. The Play Store has plenty of great options for reading music, so I wouldn't worry about the apps. I recommend starting with Mobile Sheets first! Let me know if you have any other questions!
@@ElizabethKnaubThank you so much! I asked my teacher for recommendations, and he said that overall iPads are way better for music. I can't afford most of them, so he told me that a smaller one (10.9 inches) could be a great option, but I'm worried of the switch from paper to smaller music. What do you think? Is it better a bigger sized Samsung or a smaller iPad? Thx again
do you think the 13 in. or the 11 in. would be better for singers? im a freshman music performance And education student and i cant decide which size would be better for me considering i would use it in a choral setting but also in a solo setting, as well as a conducting/education setting
its also difficult because there isn’t an apple store near my campus so i cant go to one to feel how each one feels 😔
I’m personally an advocate for larger screens, but if you have good eyesight and won’t be holding it too far away from you, you might be able to do an 11 inch. I would be a little concerned about conducting off a smaller screen, since we usually have the stand shorter and further from us when conducting. A lot of it is personal preference. Some targets and costcos (and I’m sure other stores) will have iPads on display! Maybe some type of store near you will have one you could look at, even if it’s not an Apple Store. Let me know if you have any other questions! 😊
11" is easier to carry around. 13" is better for home or stationary use.
New to forscore...wondering if it can show 2 pages side by side (horizontally I'm sure) . Thinking of music that is just 2 pages.
Hi, yes you can! Go to the display options (the little settings wheel in the top bar just to the left of the score title), and then choose the display option right below the heading “Options”. It looks almost like two pages side by side, or a horizontal rectangle with a vertical line in the center. Hope that helps!!
Thanks for that! Is there a way to have the audio play automatically when a score opens up without having to press play? (For live purposes so I can just switch between tracks in the setlist quickly)
Hi there, unfortunately I can’t find that as an option. That would be a great feature, though!
Just saw this vid and unfortunately it is a subscription now. Not sure if the extra features are worth the hassle of a subscription…
Oh no! I can’t find any info about a subscription in my app or on the website. Would you mind sharing how much the subscription is? Thanks for letting me know!
@ $4 monthly, $20 yearly and $30 lifetime. I’ve been using the free version and a note book for the journaling.
Lenovo P12 is a great tablet for reading and annotating sheet music. The P12 tablet paired with the mobile sheets app is a viable and more affordable option than the iPad pro or other bigger screen tablets.
At its price point and with a 12.7 inch screen, I totally agree!

@@ElizabethKnaub Do you have a detailed tutorial or individual videos with specific FS features? My problem is that I know what all features are available, so I don't even know what what I would request an updated video to be. For example, I didn't know that the feature in this video existed....what else do I not know!? :)
Yes I do! I have a playlist for just Forscore on my channel! :)
Thanks!!! So helpful for us newbies!
How about a 12.4 inch tab like samsung s7 fe? Does it fit an A4 size pdf?
I have the Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory book and while it's kinda great, it's also kinda not. The NOT is that there is not an answer guide with the book to all the exercises and reviews. You're kinda screwed if you currently can't afford a teacher and also can't afford the ludicrously, greedily expensive "Teacher's Answer Key" book. You'll never ever know if you got the answers right or not. Not so much of a problem with book 1 where it's so basic that it's not hard to figure out if you're right or not, but beyond that... I'm sorry I bought it now, because essentially it's an absolute con! EDITED TO ADD: Also I didn't realise they had an alto clef version, which they may not have when I first bought the basic one wayyyy back when. Not that it changes the above statements I guess. Also someone below mentioned the ABRSM books, and I think that probably applies to the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) which I've remembered I have for a couple of grades and they're quite well done in their way. (I mainly use Suzuki to learn at the moment - easiest to find videos of when you have no teacher).
Thank you for sharing your experience and bringing up those great points! I’ll be sure it look into the ABSRM books soon.
I just commented on your forscore pro video, but I just purchased and downloaded this app, but I don’t see any of these options when I tap on my score.. what am I doing wrong.

As many issues as the ABRSM has with their practical exams, their theory exams are really good imo. Grades 1 - 8. Grade 5 is required for entry to higher practica exams for musical well roundedness. They have info books with some exercises and they have a seperate workbook and they have a number of pastpapers available
Thank you for letting me know about this, I’ll look into that!
I am learning Violin via The Suzuki Method, would the last book you mentioned in this video be the best for music theory only learning as a supplement to the Suzuki method?
Yes, I think Basic Music Theory and History for Strings would work the best!
Great video!! This is gonna help a lot with teaching theory to my classes, and I also really that is has some history too!
That’s great to hear!
Can it show all the notes?
If you are looking to expand on your ports a dock would be useful. CalDigit do a number of good options such as. Also I would recommend editing off of external storage. The reason for this is because in the macbook the ssd is soldered to the board and they only have a certain life expectation due to file writes. So if you edit of an external drive you should prolong your macbook life expectation. CalDigit Thunderbolt 4 Element Hub - Universal Multi-Port Hub, 4X Thunderbolt 4/USB4 Ports, 4X USB 3.2 Gen2 10Gb/s Ports, Single display up to 8K or Dual 4K 60Hz Displays, 60W Charging with 0.8m Cable
Thank you for the great recommendations! I do edit off an external hard drive on my Mac mini and will do the same if I ever need to edit on this MacBook!
For my MacBook I use a micro fibre cleaning towel for normal glasses. It cleans the fingerprints easy and instantly away. 😊
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to try it!
