Thank you very much for your wonderful videos and dedicated service. I am an American, living in the northern midwest sector of the Great Lakes region. Recently, I traveled to Europe from the US for a friend's ordination to the Catholic priesthood. I wanted to bring his mother a special gift that was appropriate for the season (it was the Christmas holiday season) and reflected my homeland. So, I brought her a balsam fir scented candle. Balsam fir is grown in my home region of the US and it is a popular kind of American Christmas tree. Did I do wrong?

Your comments about God calling us by our name were wonderful. All your ideas on how to address guests equally wonderful. About how to dress less than your guests I differ in this. I try to dress the very best I can. I get up in the morning and dress in the best I can. Even if I am just staying at home alone. I dress the best. Not to overdue others but to always be my best.

This is mostly for bourgeois people in Paris. But a lot of it works everywhere. In the provinces people are less bothered. Cut the cheese properly !! Don’t snack on the bread! Here are some more - don’t ask what job someone does - it’s like asking how much they get paid. Don’t turn up on time - be 15 minutes late or your host might not be ready. Don’t drink to much!! Put the cheese you want on your plate the first time around - don’t keep dipping back like it’s a smorgasbord. And cut it from the middle out, not just any old chunk.

Be careful that some of these things are very different in England. If you put butter or jam on any sort of bread or croissants you must tear off small pieces and put the spread on each piece. There will be either a butter knife or a jam spoon and you put a small amount on the side of your plate. NEVER put jam on the whole croissant and eat it like a hamburger and NEVER use your table knife to dig into the jam pot! I saw that on one other etiquette vlog! Be aware that there are pitfalls in every culture. It really does not matter if you put your feet on the table and spit grape seeds on the ceiling...but your social class will be judged by subtle signs. However, I have aristocratic friends who will wipe out their brandy glass with their finger to get the last drops left and let the dog eat from their plates. My Dearest Dad used to say "Good manners are simply treating others as you would like to be treated" . BUT even the German Chancellor giggled when a visiting Royal kissed her hand! (I am glad I am not the only one!).No one tells women how to receive that little homage any more..a real pitfall socially! One of the dangers I have come across is the "Americanisation" of meals.. courses and order have been adopted but old etiquette left in place...so does the salad come before or after the main course (known as the entrée in America!) and is the over generous Appetizer the beginning of the meal or not? Do you drink the cup of coffee with the dessert or do you let it get cold and drink it after dinner? In America too you will often wait until "Grace" has been said before eating or starting to fill your plate at a buffet. If there is a priest (or minister) present then he will be asked to "Say the Blessing". if you are already gobbling your food your fellow diners will be shocked! This applies in restaurants too!

Well, I do not agree with the first rule. Instead, you SHOULD be at least 15 minutes late. It is called "le quart d heure de politesse". The idea is to let the host or hostess some extra time to prepare just in case. You should not arrive too late though. More than 30 minutes starts to be too much. I strongy disagree with rule 28 ! You can talk about anything at a dinner. We love contradiction ! Obviously, you should stay respectful. And 32 goes well beyond. Ladies are not expected to refill their glasses by themselves. It is quite an outdated rule fro my point of view, but I don't write the rules. So you have to watch ladies glasses and refill them if necessary... even if you do not have to refill you own glass. Anyway, usually, the host is in charge of refilling others glasses. So ask him first if you can refill yourself or others. Nobody wrote any "lettre de château" nowadays. An SMS, email or voice call are more appropriate. A written letter will be considered as wierd.

I m not convinced of rule 19 either. Clearly, you should not blow on your plate. But blowing gently on food on your fork or spoon should be OK.

Very useful. As a gringo, fresh from California, I did have nearly all those down, certainly by the first few dinners. You are very helpful having made this video. But a few faux pas I specialized in; I cut the wedge of cheese on the table at the tip! It set off a faceful of horrors! the other was genuine confusion on when the tines of the fork were down or up. Another is that most of my fellow eaters directed the fork or spoon into their mouths directly in front of the mouth, never from the side, while laying down the knife. Another was when chewing, most placed the knife and fork on the plate. A surprise was that the piece of bread we each had was set down on the tablecloth, not a bread plate - though I have seen little bread plates too. Another was curiosity at the marrow spoons, long slim spoon like things that go into marrow bones. One which I could never do, but was done at a retrait catholique in the woods by two elderly ladies (emphasis, ladies, old school) who did not cut and eat their apples as the rest of us. Rather, they peeled their apples with a fork and knife, never moving their elbows, then sliced the apples! All this happened while they barely moved their hands and elbows firmlyat their sides! Ah, the aristocracy! One thing which really intimidated me was when the Sommolier brought wine for me to taste (since I was paying for everything - the host) and I had no idea if what I was tasting was good or not, I had to look like I knew what I was doing. I would swirl the wine, looking at the 'legs.' I would stick my nose into the glass for the fragrance, and I would swish a sip in the front and back of my mouth, then nod knowingly. This made a very humorous impression on my guests. I also admit, that, when there was an amuse bouche served, I had no idea what it was! One interesting thing about the French as opposed to, say, Italians is that French diners speak fairly quietly and take a good deal of time eating supper. They only get loud if they drink too much. They they start singing! Lovely culture, but manners are not the same in the villages and countryside, however. Fancy restaurants are full of gastronomes or wealthy tourists and manners differ. It took me a good deal of time to eat slowly and deliberately, enjoying everything. But, ,my adopted family with its three teens at like high-poser vacuums, and were out of there at the final dessert! Funny...But we older persons would generally linger over a last glass (or two). Yes, of course I wish to subscribe!

Not quite. In America only left handed people put the fork in the left hand. And we don’t usually have the type bread you would break; we use dinner rolls, proper Southetn biscuits, or cornbread. Likewise we never use utensils for fried chicken, that would be rude. Nor do we use a different utensil for each course. A proper Southern goodbye takes at least an hour. Anything shorter infers you dislike the hosts.

I don't think I've ever been offered butter at a French meal, except in particular circumstances (eg. with jambon du pays), even in restaurants. However, restaurants generally are unsurprised when Brits or Americans ask for it! Most of these good manners are fairly international, at least in Europe, but unless you move in very polite society, some are not evident at all.
