Bohuslav Martinů's Bergerettes are an exceptional work that was written at the beginning of 1939, in a time of uncertainty. Yet there is no fear of it, but rather determination, strength, energy. Most likely, Bohuslav Martinů had never heard his work performed. The musical notation was found in his estate and was first played to the public by Foerster's trio in 1963. This and much more comes into your cities :-)
Brilliant piece, brilliantly played. Wish these Czechs were better known in the UK. As good as the third cello sonata, for instance. You need Czech players in order to interpret these pieces in the right spirit. They're so different from Russian or German pieces, for instance. British players are often too limpid to bring out the rough edges, so important to Czech music: abrupt transitions, strong contrasts, constant dance-like passages, the yearning, Dumka-like melodies or sections (as at 9.20) etc. Czech music always feels to be about to burst at the edges! Dv's Dumky trio, for instance, just gets more and more intense from movement to movement. One of the best slow movements outside Dv, Smet and Jan. Sits well by the one in Dv's piano quintet even. Did Firkusny record this, I wonder? Výborně! Indeed! Very special.
