Venerable Canda – The Happiness of Letting Go
In March 2023, London Insight Meditation hosted Venerable Canda for a retreat day in London exploring the topic of preparing the mind for the natural breath. In this talk she explores the happiness of letting go.

VENERABLE CANDA
Ven Canda began meditating in 1996 with SN Goenka and practiced intensively in India for many years. In 2006 she was ordained in Burma as a Buddhist nun and in 2012 went to Australia to learn under the guidance of Ajahn Brahm and receive full (bhikkhuni) ordination.
Ven Canda’s teachings emphasise kindness and letting go as a way to deepen samadhi (stillness) and insight. Her style is warm, engaging and richly informed by the pragmatism and compassion of the early Buddhist texts.
In 2016 Ven Canda founded Anukampa Bhikkhuni Project with her Teacher Ajahn Brahm - a UK charity aimed at establishing the first “Forest Monastery” in the UK where women can take full ordination.
You can read more about this worthy community project here: www.anukampaproject.org.

Christina Feldman, you have just healed and transformed my heart through clarifying what Metta actually means. I was born into a Quaker community back in Palestine/West Bank and we call everyone friends. They even do not use artificial names of putting any human above or under another... everyone is a friend!

One question regarding the bodily relaxation, what do we do if we suffer from chronic pain and specific parts of the body won't relax much, if at all? Should I be focusing more on compassion towards those painful sensations? I had brain surgery nearly 10 years ago, and its left my neck muscles and all immediate muscles extremely tense. Will be seeking PT again for it soon, as this tension becomes so much more apparent whenever I regularly meditate. And while I know the pain itself is not a hindrance, its sometimes hard to not want it to go away. And even when there is no to little aversion, that tension makes it hard to let go of the body (it feels like there's a constant, dull spike going through my vertebrae which makes my throat, neck, and face also tense up)

If I dont meditate, the pain isn't as apparent. But conversely, my attitude towards life gets worse, lol

12:15 "Answers are not very useful". What a fascinating point (in this context). Many other helpful ideas too - eg think of metta as "friendliness" or "goodwill" rather than as "loving- kindness". Excellent talk by John Peacock. Thank you.
