Atabaque Building: A Closer Look - introduction
We introduce a new video series that will go in depth on certain aspects of atabaque building.
This has been requested a number of times in the past so why not make it happen now that we have a bit more time to do so.
The series will cover the following topics:
- Wood selection - A key component
- The math - That thing no one ever explains. Get your calculator.
- Jigs -Tools help a lot. Are they necesssary?
- Cutting - So many different cuts, so many tips
- Bending - Can wood bend without breaking?
- Shell finishing - The part most people cheap out on
- Skin prep - Before going on the drum, you need to to this
- Heading/roping - The ropework basics and extras
- Base making - Metal or wood, why and how
- Metal work - The other missing piece you need to learn
- Hide processing - This part needs more R&D but here's what we know
If you haven't watched already, here's an end-to-end build video:

Making Baquetas for playing the berimbau
Переглядів 4,2 тис.6 років тому
There are many ways to make baquetas. This video shows how to make them like dowels or long tenons, using a custom purpose-built jig that acts just like a big pencil sharpener. Not a new idea, but one that works well enough once the blade is adjusted properly. The advantage of having a jig like that is to be able to use various types of wood instead of just the ones that are sold as dowels pre-...

Raw hide preparation for atabaque - Warning: a bit graphic
Переглядів 2,2 тис.7 років тому
This is a timelapse of the skin preparation over a few days. It is part of the 2017 Challenge; making an Atabaque from start to finish in as little time as possible. The skin came to me in a box, kept refrigerated for 2 days but not salted. I applied a cleaning process that can surely be improved on, but so far it has worked for me. There is practically no information online on how to process a...

Fixing a very traditional Atabaque with a lot of historical value
Переглядів 3,2 тис.8 років тому
Fixing Mestre Rodriguinho's atabaque, built by the late Mestre Peixinho. The top ring ropework had broken in multiple places and needed to be replaced, meaning the entire tensioning ropework had to be loosened in order to free the skin and rings entirely, before re-weaving the top ring and re-attaching it. Took about one hour in total. Patreon link: www.patreon.com/malucoatabaque

    Hello my friend. Live long and prosper. excellent your work. I'm a luthier here in Brazil and I'm a candomblecist. I will start producing drums, djembes and other instruments in a handmade way and with a totally manual process. It would help me a lot if I passed the dimensions of the bracket made of rebar where I put the slats for the glue. You could help me with that. Strong hug, success and much axé

    • @atabaqueworks8926
      @atabaqueworks8926 7 років тому

      Probably the thing on which I spent the most time. Far from perfect, can still improve a lot. It basically allows me to cut staves precisely enough and repeatedly. My jig is set for 24 staves at 7.5 degree cut (180 degrees/24). The stave dimensions are dictated by the math of the top diameter of the drum, widest diameter and bottom diameter, all divided by the number of staves (24). Idea is not mine, I improved on something I have seen from a conga maker.

    Muito bom teu video, parabéns pelo trabalho. Gostaria de saber como você calcula as cintas de metal para cortar da forma mostrada no video

    • @atabaqueworks8926
      @atabaqueworks8926 7 років тому

      Obrigado. Eu nao sei como explicar im portugues, entao vou fazer im ingles. I calculated the top and the bottom part of the atabaque separetely using trigonometry. By knowing the diameter at the top, widest and bottom, I can draw 2 cones with their dimensions. From there, trigonometry can be applied to calculate the angles. It came to 9 degrees (bottom) and 14 degrees (top). Using these angles I can then calculate the diameter needed for the metal hoop (cintas de metal) based on how far they are from the widest point. I also have a special jig to make the process faster.
