Honda VFR800FI 1998 MoT ride through the country lanes of Anglesey

This ride was primarily to take the bike for its's MoT(UK Government road worthiness test), which it duly passed. I'd had the fork stanchions re-chromed, fitted a new front tyre, and de-linked the brakes, plus numerous other smaller jobs, like cleaning and lubricating the Ignition and Front brake light switches(very un-honda like symptoms of failure, but I guess it is 25 years old and no-one sh...

      2-3kg of coal and a handful of wooden sticks would be going out after around 90 minutes. I top up the coal after the fire has got going after 30 minutes in this video, for a bigger blaze and because I want it to burn for several hours into the evening. I would add another kilo of coal every 45 minutes or so to keep it going at the rate I want, maybe adding a log on top to make the coal supply last a bit longer and radiate more heat into the room. Nothing like having a real fire in the room!

    Lighting the fire was one of my jobs, making the bricks from old newspapers and placing a sheet over the front to help the flue draw up. I've never seen one catch like that before though, is that pine kindling? It's popping a bit

      I think is was just some random softwood, but it might have had a bit of a mix as well, so you could be right. Yes, that's a great trick with the newspaper over the front of an old baxi! Always used to enjoy going over the top and letting the paper get drawn in when it started to get scorched. That's one of the good things about living in Anglesey there's always a stiff breeze to make the chimneys draw well! Enjoy your fires over Christmas, I know I will.

    Your Idea is very good. But the rider progress with their faces is difficult to understand. The individual win from CP to CP in time, compared with the absolut time would be better In my opinion it should be longer (20-30min) including all the finishers with their progress, overtakes and problems into the race. This would be an information, nobody had during the race. It was possible for Red Bull to have this information during the race. For us it's impossible without the POV footage from the finishers. With the POV footage for example it would be possible, to compare the personal speed from point x to point y with overlapping the footage. (I've done some years ago with the POV footage from Jonny and Graham in Carl's Dinner. With an overlapping view it's much more impressive, how fast Graham in this conditions is.) But...who from them uploaded footage this year? Only Billy some minutes and Jonny the "full" race, but his cam capacity was only enough for 1hour18. With the footage you had, it was a good work. Hope, my bad english is possible to understand. ;)

    • @MarkDaleADV
      @MarkDaleADV Рік тому

      Hi there, thanks for comments, they are much appreciated, and by the way, your English is great, perfectly understandable. I have already changed the templates before next time, incorporating some of your suggestions, as I also felt it needed a few tweaks. The stage times will now also be tabulated, the animation, and the tables will be on the screen for longer as well. I know what you mean, the data and footage is very scarce as you say, not helped by the fact that Gopros seem to be frowned upon in many of the events on the Hard enduro circuit. Ideally, I would like the GPS tracks for all the riders, not sure if Erzberg still use them. Romaniacs will of course, and that would yield the best comparison data. I'm inclined to concentrate on the timing, and not the video, it is as you obviously know, a time intensive process, and also the race data is a fresh area of exploration if you like, more of a unique approach for me. We'll see how it goes. I'm thinking of doing another video titled - "Should Graham Jarvis have won Erzberg 2023" I think it would be popular LoL. What do you think, have a bit of a rant, and wind a few people up hehe.

      @MarkDaleADV Рік тому

      Thanks, I usually alternate on the bike vids, between titles and voice-over, but the slowish nature of the road lent itself to the cause, and so I tried to raise my voice and it seemed mostly intelligeble. I also taped off the front vent of my helmet before the ride to help, but anything over about 45mph was still mostly drowned out by the wind noise. I think the poor aerodynamics of my ADV helmet is partly to blame, but I don't like riding without a peaked helmet now because of the glare, so the chat will have to suffer I'm afraid. Anyway, it's nice to know now that I can add an audible commentary or notes to myself where I can. I'm working on the main video for the ride, but it's taking longer than expected to tell the story, as opposed to short excerpts like this, so I decided to make some progress by throwing up a few more straightforward location based vids. I thought the camera caught the extreme incline rather well, especially on the downhill sections, which is unusual, or maybe it's because it is so extreme, that it appeared so? I've also managed finally to partially master the technicalities of the whole compression/bandwidth subject with my camera/editor combination, helped by a firmware upgrade on the camera. Also, living in Wales the file sizes are even more of an issue with the relatively slow broadband speeds I enjoy!!! Looking forward to your next ride, we must make the most of the weather and the time of the year, which I enjoy the most. Dorset looks really nice, I watch what Nathan the Postman puts out, and so I see quite a bit of your neck of the woods, although I have been a few times before myself. Keep up the good work.

      @@velofan. Hi, yes it's pros and cons with camera positioning, I like the camera to be able to see what I see, but it does mean some of the rapid head movements need to be edited out. I watch million dollar bogan who employs a bike mounted(GoPro) camera that he has configured so he can move it around, pointing it forward or back toward him, or carrying it, placing it remote as require, but In think he benefits from having a 250kg plus Harley to use as a stable shooting platform. My Sony XV1000 stabilisation can't quite cope with being handlebar mounted. It is a constant learning process with the tech, and you just have to experiment to find the best solutions. I'm using Davinci Resolve at the moment, which is free, but I feel I may be losing some of my initial video quality because of the limited encoding options. I'm not going this year, but my son has just sent me his password for the TTplus service(live tv coverage), but we went three times during the Guy Martin years, flew and camped twice, and the last time in 2015, I think, we went on 125 trail bikes and did all the Greenway roads, as well as enjoying the racing, what a trip, nothing like experiencing all that with your son🤗 If you want a closer Welsh option, check out the Devil's Staircase, absolutely awesome! Not bad for a lower priced gun, and it seems to be blowing up a storm. Well done. I've subbed.

      No, not bad at all, maybe I was a bit unfair shooting on such a windy day, I maybe should of repeated the test to see if I could do better in calmer conditions. I enjoy the process of getting the best out of springers, and finding the best way to shoot them. Thanks for the sub, it's appreciated, I'll have to get back to work on some new videos.

    I don't really know what to say. I have three co2 rifles and they are very accurate. Mind I have modded them, but even before I did they were very good.

      Hi, It is what it is, even though very well put together, the short unrifled(but choked) barrel doesn't produce the goods at more than 15 metres. I've tried several pellets and nothing helps. I've read a few other reviews, and it just seems to be the norm. Having said that, it does make up for it in other ways, being a very fun and compact gun. I've since removed the scope, and fitted a red dot, and this suits its use much better. I'd like to do a close quarters combat type tactical drill with it. Hopefully I'll set something up this year.

    Hi Mark can the app be installed on PC or does it have to used on phone ? Thanks

      Hi there, it won't work on a pc because it's an android app. I could do a spreadsheet in xks format, which is all you really need. Do you use MS Excel or Google sheets?

    Hello, I own one of these rifles. I have done a few mods to it. It is one of my keepers.

      Yes, I know what you mean, they're easy to work on, and give great results. For the money, there's no good reason to get rid! Happy shooting.

    Hi Mark, thanks for sending me the app in the zip file. Once I had changed the settings on my phone I was able to install it successfully. I played around with changing settings just to get used to using it before I did any shooting and sound recording. The reason that I wanted to try it was because I had changed the hammer spring in my CP2 to a high power one and I wanted to see the impact on the ft/lb rating. It took several attempts and a lot of close examination of the sound file but the result was worth the effort. The power had gone up from 8 ft/lbs to over 11. I think that the app will be useful in determining pellet velocity as I test out different types and continue to fine-tune the gun. Many thanks and enjoy your 'pint'!

      Great to hear it worked out for you Peter, and pleased it will prove useful as you continue to tune your rifle.
