Sustainability is going mainstream - but where did the story start? For decades, the traditional capitalist business model required growth at all costs. Business-as-usual guaranteed unsustainability. Now, in contrast, we see growing adoption of greener practices, but where did these ideas come from-and where are the linked movements headed? In his 21st book, John draws on his half a century of ...

Thank you for putting this conversation on UA-cam. I will share it on social media now. As for the U.K. being / not being a leader at this point (thanks to who its Prime Minister is), voters all over the world (especially here in the USA) need to come to terms with the impact their votes have on the future. Short term thinking - frequently driven by manufactured outrage at "the others" - threatens the whole of humanity... including the wealthy 1 percent that thinks it can ride out the climate crisis storms ahead. I hope what is at stake is communicated clearly to the public... ideally by any celebrities who happen to be at COP28. That's how you reach the public... when people like Arnold Schwarzenegger say something!

Do we have time for the bottom up approach? The fact that there are so few politicians who are truly engaged underpins the lack of urgency in what's happening now. Perhaps one of the themes for next year should be how we push these issues up the agenda in politics as well as engage the wider public. That might mean having to put up with more politicians attending. (sorry John)! Loved listening to your perspectives.

Yes, I'm with Mark Shayler when he says 'I never thought that we couldn't sort it out until now.' Oh dear. But encouraged by John and Louise talking about the importance of tackling the issues around conflict - and focusing all of us on the preventative approach. However, one has to ask - 'How do we start from here?' I suspect I'm not alone in feeling powerless. Perhaps I am unusual in that I normally feel there's something I can do....

It's lovely to watch this and hear that Anthropy has found its legs this year. Thanks for keeping the conversation about education and accelerating the change in its approach. Bringing the destitute and the discomfort in the room is how we change. Thank you for highlighting this. I had a ticket to come but got ill at the last minute. Sorry to miss you all. The presentation made by Mr. Kats in Boston this year was very interesting and an ideal topic for the TEDxBoston venue. Understanding and engaging in basic actions to reduce urban heat allows everyone to participate and it can improve aesthetics. Kats makes a cogent case for improving communities in a manner that demonstrates and measures immediate benefits. Thoughtful and practical ideas may not be perfect but can make a big difference.

I am glad to have found this. In my view also, the systems of wisdom traditions will be our only sustainable way forward. I am not quite sure how to picture economics as a living system though, as said in the beginning of the video, but will let that slide... I am also a little bit apprehensive about saying that this regenerative economics will bring prosperity, without first clearly defining that new kind of prosperity. That kind of prosperity does not contain lots of new stuff... We have to realize that our common and current view of what is prosperity (a bit like the "good life") is a major part of the problem. It is not sustainable. And this must be addressed as politically unsettling as it is. Having less is always a bummer. I heard a new term yesterday called "indigenuity". It concerns the way of indigenous peoples as helping to uncover ideas about how we should proceed. I will certainly look up more about that. This video was pleasantly a softer version in comparison to full on Degrowth-path. I think Jason Hickel's views are spot on, but due to them being politically a bit more divisive, this regenerative perspective might be a more palatable pill to swallow. Saying outright that capitalism is the culprit gets so many people worked up with fears of communism. I myself think capitalism shares a nasty feature that seems to naturally (!) and systemically occur in all -isms: taken to it's extreme it implodes on itself. That said, many -isms have a good ride, but always to a point. We should always try to remember that.

The Earth is cooler w the atmos/GHGs/albedo not warmer. To perform as advertised the GHGs require "extra" energy upwelling from the surface upwelling as a black body. The kinetic heat transfer processes of the contiguous atmos molecules render that scenario impossible. No greenhouse effect, no GHG heating, no man/CO2 driven cllimate change or Gorebal warming.

Are you aware of the Venus Project with it's resource based economy. There seems to be some interesting overlaps with this discussion and the thesis represented, namely moving away from scarcity to abundance and also the idea of decentralising. This is also echoed in finance with blockchain technology via Bitcoin ect. where decentralizing the monetry system is key. Some very interesting ideas here.

Nice theory, but no concrete explanation of how it could work. It is nice to imagine, but I can do that by reading a fantasy story. It has the smack of fiction without any concrete action plan or even a specific example of how it has worked in the past.

@@davemartin1288 Tesla has done the most of any corporation to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy and the reduction of fossil fuel use. Solar City is no longer a stand alone entity. It is now part of Tesla. And the price of the Tesla Powerwall is relatively expensive because Tesla cannot meet demand. The backlog to individuals is incredible. It is similar to their vehicles where Tesla has been increasing prices to dampen demand. If one were to order a Tesla Model Y today, delivery could be 9 months from now.

Will John jump in later? Such a cool duo to listen to! Unfortunately, I'll have to listen another time. I recently finally read Reimagining Capitalism in a World on Fire by Rebecca Henderson. Correct me if I'm wrong. Although Rebecca doesn't use the terms regenerative or Green Swan, her concepts certainly fit into regenerative thinking. It doesn't have to be a live roundtable, yet it would be great to read a roundtable of the three of you discussing regenerative capitalism not in real time. I look forward to watching today's video soon!!!
