Liminal Spaces (Hotels)
Liminal spaces often create a sense of nostalgia triggered in your mind from early childhood memories mostly ranging from mid 90’s to early 2000’s. They can make you feel nostalgic yet disturbed at any given time to any unnerving image.
To be in a Liminal Space means to be on the precipice of something new but not quite there yet.
liminal spaces are important because of their ability to construct their own values and ideologies relating to a particular time period in history and then to transpose these values to a time belonging to their own experiences
Shoutout to the users who submitted their liminal space photos to help add to the video!👇

A more technical comment, but this is back when architecture was more creative and open-minded, especially for children’s places. All of this is what attracted our young minds is because it allowed us to use our sense of imagination and playful minds. As for more older people, we needed to have environments that weren’t dull but weren’t too colorful either, we just needed something that was welcoming enough to help us get through the day. All of that stuff is actually really important for our minds because it creates a healthier environment that helps us look at life at a more neutral way.

I’m obsessed with these kinds of liminal space videos. The music feels like an echo in my memory, recalling similar looking places from my childhood and adolescence. Some of them blurry and hard to remember, others a little more clearly. Without even me noticing it, my eyes grew misty, and suddenly feel two tears streaming down my cheek. I blink once and my whole vision goes blurry from the teary eyes and that’s when I notice it. Other images bring a smile to my face and even some of them making me feel a little lightheaded, because some of them are so close to looking like places I’ve visited at some point in my life. The feeling isn’t quite nostalgia… but more of a desire. A wish. A wish of wanting to be there in that moment. To go back 20 years and revisit some of those old memories. Wishing so hard that I could travel back, and wishing and wishing… But no matter how much I wish, it doesn’t come true. In the end, the feeling is a bittersweet one. Much as how reality turned out to be in the end for me: dreams did not come true, no matter how hard I wished for them, how much I wanted them. It didn’t come to fruition. Yet, I am content with my life now at the same time. Reality is never as it seems, so the taste is a bittersweet one. There are days it’s hard for me to tell whether it is real or not. If it’s happening or I am just imagining, dreaming or thinking about it. In the same spectrum, I’ve dreamt dreams that started off with me waking up from my bed. And it’s almost always a scenario where I wake up and the power in my house is gone. It’s early morning, roughly 5:30am or 6:00am. It’s still a little dark, but I can begin to see dawn. And no matter how much I flip my light switches in my home in my dream, they won’t come on and I am left with a weird sense of dread. This is a dream I recall so vividly, because I’ve had it at least four separate times so far in the same year. And when I think about it, it’s hard to tell if it really happened or I was just dreaming it…

Liminal spaces have 3 major emotional strings i've noticed. Comforting, Curiosity, and Terrifying. Comforting Liminal spaces are places that often invoke a sense of nostalgia. A place you remember, even if you know you've never been. A place that is quiet, a solitude that means nothing can be there, nothing can hurt you. It is just you, and your time to exist. Curiosity Liminal spaces are ones where, you maybe recognize this place, or maybe not, but it's still, empty, quiet. It's a place you want to explore because it's empty. This is a place that should have people, people who will normally either be in your way or who by rules have to stop you from going places here that you can explore now. Terrifying Liminal spaces tend to have a lot of traits with Curosity but they tend to be more, uncanny. The original, the classic backrooms tend to fit this overlap. Cause yes, there is curiosity, where are you, why are you here? where even is here? But it's terrifying because it's so, inhuman. The organization of the walls, the endless lights with almost no dark places where one could reasonably rest. The lack of structure or people. All make it so, uncanny, terrifying. Cause yes, once you hear something that isn't human, you know there is something here, and there's no grantee it's safe. An often overlooked aspect of Liminal spaces specially IRL liminal spaces is that time of day can have a significant impact. Schools make for the most obvious impact. At least for me. A completely empty school hallway in the day is, both Curiosity, but also, a bit terrifying. Sure maybe your rational brain could run 'well maybe it's [insert season] break' or 'well maybe it's the weekend' or 'well maybe everyones in class' but there's still a part of you that is, unnerved, cause so much of story, media, personal experience. When you are in the halls, it's when it's crowded, while everyone is heading to class. So to see it, bright, lit up, and empty, it's wrong. While the same halls at night can be Curiosity but it might only be Curiosity. Cause this is a time the school is empty that you almost never get to see, you never get to know the school at night, cause school lets out at 2-3 pm maybe 4 for extra-curricular stuff, but this late, this dark? No you never get to be here, and that's exciting.

Hey, 2007 kid here. While im one of the younger gen z kids, I'm still a gen z nonetheless. I miss this time; the world felt more colorful, less depressing, and people were so much more friendly. To tell ya the truth, the world as it is now feels empty. All the years post-2020 feel like just a void of darkness, like the world's lost all its spark, all its joy and color, leaving a husk of what it once was.

It's crazy to think that when we compare to the past, things were evolving much more slowly compared to now ! For example : cars were invented around 1880's but became popular only in 1950's and now they seem pretty integrated within our lives, it's hard to believe a world without them except if you live in specific world's regions ! Things took decades to face deep and real changes or even a century ! But as someone who was born in 2005, i feel like things have changed too fastly ! It's not such a good thing, it gives a feeling of everything being outdated or prehistoric and while we shouldn't reject modernity and new innovations, it should be taken in account that progress must not come too fast or it will trigger plenty of problems and unforeseen consequences ! When i look at 2018 when both AI and cloud gaming were a niche thing, when Switch was recent, when the youtube which we used to know was still here, when there wasn't any pandemic and then newer things came out so quickly ! I'd like to rebirth in world where things are evolving more slowly, wherein we take amusement into them, a better progress would occur !
