Scanlan Talks
United States
Приєднався 8 сер 2019
This channel contains a collection of informal recordings from our 2019-2024 school years. It is intended only for students of these classes, for academic purposes-- e.g., to catch up if you miss a class or if you want to review something that came up in class. The talks are specific to the content and context of these classes and not intended for wider distribution. The views presented are not necessarily those of the instructor or students but intended to represent views one might hold of the original author's statements. (In other words, don't assume that what we say is necessarily what we believe. We're exploring ideas, not indoctrinating.)
LAST TALK: Leo Rosten (December 12, 2024) [period 6]
This is period 6's final talk of the semester:
“The purpose of life is not to be happy - but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make some difference that you lived at all."
Leo Rosten
(1908 - 1997)
American scriptwriter

Have you thought of doing lectures on the philosophers and philosophies that influenced the writing of the u.s. constitution?
@ScanlanTalks you are a liar with what you have done here. please live in reality and rename this video to reflect what it actually is: YOU (not TL) giving a lecture, and a shitty one at that, about the wrongs of lying; TL isnt even mentioned in the lecture. You should be embarrassed to be a liar.
Good lecture. 🙏 10Q
I appreciate your kind words!
Thanks for the lecture!
This is AMAZING. The music?
Thank you! Thomas Ligotti writes great fiction. The music I played at the top of the video was not great music. That was a pre-set loop from my Mellotron called "Today is the Day, MK-2". I played that loop because I can't afford the rights to "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" by Shaboozey. And why would I play you that specific slice of complaint pop-country if I could afford it? Because that was the #1 song on November 15, 2024; and that was the day I recorded this video.
Very informative video!
Again thanks for sharing . Great teaching. 🙏🏼☝🏼
Always appreciated. :)
Im glad my son has you as a teacher . 🙏🏼🙂
I deeply appreciate you saying that. I can't imagine a greater honor than that you trust me with his education. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing and your discipline in being such a great example of what a good teacher is really about.
and he is wearing a mask unbelivable
We need more teachers like you ! I can’t complain.
I appreciate your kind words! And I'm glad you got something useful out of the talk.
what you do is amazing. thank you<3
I deeply appreciate you telling me that. Thank you!
Why would I listen to a presenter on Joost that’s wearing a mask? Fuck off!
Thank you !! Cant find much about Seneca on UA-cam , wonder why…

1:50 well said.
I appreciate you saying so-- it took a lot of courage for me to open up like that... 😆
"I know that I know nothing"
That makes you one of the wisest people to ever live.

Applause from me... Thank you...
Boooooo!
I was hoping to hear his voice, I should read the comments first.
“If we are to survive as free men, we must face up to this problem of politically inspired mental coercion, with all its ramifications.”
Mr Scalan, This is funny and interesting. Thank you.

The god of the gaps
That was very helpful thank you very much
I'm really happy to hear that! Thank you for telling me. :)
I'm a Antinatalist Pessimistic Liar😂
Same bestie <3
It's a little ironic that this guy has a face mask, not just because of spencer's libertarianism, but because spencer literally thought taking precautions against disease (improved sanitation and the like) was a mistake because it prevented the culling of weak links in the heard. God is laughing.
*Promo SM* 😑
Why are you teaching Bruno Bettelheim? He was a liar, an imposter, and he NEVER worked with Freud. He lied about his degrees (His degree was in visual art!) He is RESPONSIBLE for the deaths of hundreds of autistic children who were removed from their loving homes because of his cruel, academically baseless, made-up "refrigerator mother" theory. He experimented on the most vulnerable human beings in our midsts. The hundreds of non speaking profoundly autistic patients who he housed on a prison camp of a farm and allowed to STARVE to death. When the truth emerged about his false background he took his own life. The only lessons that can be learned from Bettelheim is that Narcissistic evil exists and society has to properly vett people who we allow to create policy for the voiceless.
I remember this lol (it was last week)
Sound, please👎
If you can improve the sound, would be nice🙂
I recently got a lapel microphone. Fingers crossed that it'll help! :)
this is not his voice is it?
NO
how is this a Thomas Ligotti guest lecture exactly?
This is a guest lecture, by ScanlanLectures, on the comment by Thomas Ligotti. (The intended audience information is in the channel's About section.) In short, we discuss quotes as part of an ongoing assignment in high school classes. I delivered this talk on Ligotti's comment to a class I was visiting.
😐
It isn’t. :/
@@ScanlanTalkskind of makes you liar because unless this guy didn't ask the question in the comment section I wouldn't know it, other than the fact I kind of knew what Ligotti's voice sounded like.. You kind of wasted my time because I wouldn't have bothered listening to this high School lecture by you. And to give you the benefit of a doubt. Perhaps you were unconscious of how your thumbnail and title was a bit deceiving and difficult to figure out who the "guest" speaker was and it was vague at best in the description... You do know that Ligotti has a loyal following of adult readers who are interested in everything he does .. so it's a little click batie..
@cargotrailerkenny yup oh well. That's cheeks nose-to-tail. What are you going to do.
that's not thomas ligotti
A wise man told me, "pay attention to what you're paying attention to". I believe sometimes it's just some things guys say to show off(like most guys love to do), but; something, someone, and somehow another puzzle peace came into view that maybe subconsciously makes them happier than college could have. I still think you should still go for "it" and if it doesn't turn out well you can always sue Dr. Scanlan.
He’s lecturing brainwashing while wearing a mask. Hey! We were all fooled weren’t we?
Not at all. This lecture was in California, where masks were required by the state and school district. (No mask, no class as an expression of state power.) But that is part of the point-- in other talks, I addressed masks as being as useful as Diogenes' rolling a vase up a hill...
Complying to state power contributes to the menticide. And those in leadership positions ( you ) showed your students how to comply, and the debilitating cycle of slavery continues.
@@ScanlanTalks so you missed the point of the book
How ironic. A lecture on the raping on the mind and you're wearing a mask. Complete success by the same state apparatus you are trying to explain.
'so maybe if you look for the meaning, maybe you'll find meaning as easily as you find problems right now' -SL
Always great to hear from you, Romie. I hope you've been well!
