Nebbiolo: My favorite grape...And LeBron James like it too!
I taste two nebbiolos: one from Trader Joe's and the other is a catdaddy nebbiolo from the Valtellina. Nino Negri makes powerful and seductive wines, while Trader Joe's delivers an under $10 excellent value that gives you a peek inside the nebbiolo tent at a fair price.

Trader Joe's Reserve Petite Sirah: The Bomb
Переглядів 4009 місяців тому
I love Petite Sirah. When done right it creates one of the most complete drinking experiences you can find. When done wrong, it's a hot mess. Most of the beauties out there are fairly expensive but Trader Joe's has managed to find a real humdinger for under $10. I'm grateful!

Best Wine? Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Rivals Caymus at Half the Cost🍷 #youtubeshorts
Overpriced and overrated. Too sweet and not well balanced with acidity and tannins. Stags leap blows this away.
Excellent! I signed up immediately. I'm always looking for something that over delivers for its price. Did I see the 2 Cabs trading Jabs? (I think is the name of it.) I've been wanting to try that one! I'm happy to see someone recommending it. I'll be heading to TJ's very soon....Thanks!
Recently tried this wine at a tasting I put on where I selected the wines - went fairly mainstream since the crowd was not that wine oriented but ran a gamut from GC champagne to value Barsac. The gracious hostess insisted on Caymus which I put in after a BV Tapestry '19 (because I got it for $32). Fortunately her partner talked about the Caymus (they had recently been there) since I didn't want to. Of course people liked it - because that is what is DESIGNED to do. It is a Cabernet "drink" for uninitiated status. Glad to here there is vintage variation. How has this wine reached this maturity at 2 years? The french might call this"pharmacy" wine. If this wine is 15% ABV how many grams of sugar were added after fermentation?
“Cabernet drink”. I like it!
Thanks for the TJ's suggestion! I've added it to my list of new things to try from TJ's. I see that Nebbiolo falls in between Zinfandel and Cabernet in the boldness/full bodied chart, which is where I've been drinking wine from lately. So it sounds like a winner to me! Can't wait to try it!
Hey there. Quant speaking, nebbiolo may fall in between that spectrum. However, when you taste nebbiolo, you may find the flavor profile, if not weight, to be very different from Cabernet or zin. I think it lands somewhere between pinot noir and aglianico.
Really? A big bold grape that drinks like a lighter one? Now I want to try it even more! Thanks for that info, good to know! Cheers!
There are very good Nebbiolo’s from Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico
Glad to be in good company. Definitely my favourite, and I love the region. It’s expensive, but I love a Barolo.
Looking forward to your upcoming series on Nebbiolo. It’s also my favorite grape, by far. I was in Valtellina last year and just fell in love with the region. Beautiful, beautiful landscape. ArPePe and Rainoldi are my favorites so I’m hoping to see one or both make an appearance in your series.
I’m going to my old workplace TJ’s to shop tomorrow so I will look forward to this wine.
Neve tried it. Will now!
Great info, thanks for sharing and the review. I have a bottle to add to my TJ list. Thanks, keep it up.
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Well it’s about time. Valtelina Nebbiolo and pizzoceri is a heaven made match. Throw in a little local Speck. Think Paitin and Vjara.
Speck and nebbiolo make for an early evening 🎉
I was recommended Kirk on campaign by a friend of mine and it did not disappoint. It’s a shame that
Right on with the quality. Having enjoyed visiting this area of France, I want to clarify that this wine is made in Carcassonne, which has nothing to do with Rhone Valley wine. Yes, these grapes grow all over the South of France, but in this case we are in the Pays D'OC. So we can't compare this wine with Northern Rhone wines. This wine stands out as a nicely balanced example of the Languedoc Region.
$120 at TW in Michigan.
Beyond my budget, but it sounds like a good one. Thanks for the review.
Yeah, it’s super spendy but for those with a Caymus budget…..it’s an opportunity to taste truly amazing cab.
@UpYourWineGame Yeah, it sounds awesome!
Great review! Just followed, fellow UA-camr here. Mainly 🥃, but I’ve been interested in exploring options in the 🍷 world.
Massively Over Priced and not worth the hype and the price!
Does the rubber on the nose decrease as it sits in the glass?
Gotta love that head of hair on Toto
Very nice review. I’m impressed that the wine was able to show the high acid and red fruits since, as you note, it comes from a warmer region. I would have passed this up in the store if I saw it due to that fact but if I find myself in TJ’s looking for wine I think I may seek this one out.
Great to see you back at it. This is great, I'm always on the lookout for a budget cab, thanks.
Thanks, but I do miss the longer format content. I'm hoping all is well and you are back at it soon.
useless review
i love a sweet red this is our xmas wine
You gotta do the tasting blind or other wise you can tell that the Costco bubbles comes in the stocky bottle
very interesting back story
Caymus is an overly "manufactured" wine... but hey, it has a taste following. So let's all agree to move on... Personally, I enjoy it!
I hear ya! And I’ll be glad to move on when the “following” moves on to something else. That’s why I’m here 🤷🏽♂️
Well done ! Very revealing breakdown of what once was, and NOW IS !! Yes the golden days are now buried treasure in the Industry, especially California i.e. Napa Valley Cabernet...Caymus has free will as long as its popular . I'm a Wine Steward at Vons in San Diego for the last 11 years and this brand has never waned off the Borgen Case top tier shelf...! 😎🍷☮
Caymus is famously crap!
I found it to taste pretty chemically, honestly. Had it at a wedding and decided to drink Heineken instead.
I get it dude!
Never a bad bottle. Some better than others
Headed for Trader Joes'! Excellent review.....
Spot-on and thanks!
You’re welcome!
Love this review - Austin Hope Cabernets are a family favorite as are many Paso Robles reds - Just subscribed to WINE GAME!
Thanks!!!
I agree the 2021 was not good
I’m still confused by the hate. Is it ultra complex? No. Is there some marketing and brand you’re paying for? Yes. But it’s a good sipper and if you ask 90% of non- “experts” they all enjoy it
vinepair.com/articles/wa-sommeliers-most-overrated-red-wine/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR21TVf0wUlFrDJ8PnDbMC3LgWhaqxFkhWCrd9__dg38PbmFLMlvFNv-iyo_aem_tkWHGtM4uUTWtG4HQh-Q7A
For most people, $100 for a ״good sipper” is not a rational choice. If I’m going to pay premium price, I better be getting premium taste. Much more than a “good sipper”. I am confused by your love for something that isn’t worth the price.
Turn down the damn music, cant hear the commentary.
Hi! Thank you for this video. I totally enjoy Caymus, as it is indeed velvety smooth! I am interested to hear if you have any alternative suggestions to Caymus cabernet? Thank you so much in advance!
Hi there! Yes, Austin Hope is made in the same style and it’s literally half the price of Caymus. Generally speaking, if you hope around Paso Robles cabs, you will find that “round and plump” style of Cabernet. Marietta Cellars and J. Lohr’s medium tier cab based reds are tremendous wines and relative values compared to Caymus.
There is a big difference in using a Coravin, like you did and using a decanter. It makes a big difference.
But you can Coravin a glass and let it open up there.
I just opened this up with some sockeye salmon with my recipe of Garlic and cinnamon. Just rode 20 miles in my bike and on my deck and a beautiful Minnesota afternoon. This is full bodied and tasty , fruity. I was surprised . This is a 10 to 20 buck chuck. I’ve had crap for 100 a bottle. Definitely worth 10 bucks.
Just buy a bottle of Bonanza, the poor man's Caymus. Which is made by the Wagner family. It's about $20 and basically tastes the same in my opinion.
Yep!
Kirkland Brut champagne is really really good for the price!
People latch onto names or labels. This is another example of how easily most people are followers rather then being able to think for themselves.
Great review, thank you!
Parachute pants 😂🪂
Caymus was my introduction to the wine world as I’m sure many others also . My first bottle (2009)I enjoyed it but found it cloyingly sweet as I started to consume more. As my palate improved I was able to Segway into Bordeaux.
Caymus is now one of the worst, overhyped, Napa cabs. On a side note, I finally tried a Bonanza this past weekend and it was almost undrinkable. The three of us trying it just decided to drain poor it
If someone wants big lush smooth fruit bomb Cabs, why not just buy Paso Robles Cab for 1/4 the price?
Do you have suggestions?
@@williamoconnell4427 For starters, Austin Hope (everything they make from all their 2nd and 3rd labels is fantastic), Peachy Canyon, Castoro Cellars…just about any winery along the 46 West or East corridor. Paso Cabs in general, are big lush fruit-forward styles.
Yep, early 90s were the days. Used to use special select to pound Liberty School into the market. Good relative value alternative is Austin Hope Cab.
Interested in seeing what you suggest as an alternative to this Caymus. Enjoying your videos, cheers 👍🍷
