I don't like the mix on anything off Keep Me Fed. The guitars sound like a detuned fart.

Once again the title is a pun (like _Firth_ _of_ _Fifth)_ - because it's a song about King Cnut (or "Canute") and the coastline. He was king of England, Norway, and Denmark; becoming annoyed by courtiers who flattered him, some saying he was more powerful than the sea, he had his throne taken down to the coast and set up on the shore as the tide was coming in. Then he sat in it and commanded the tide to turn back, which (of course) it didn't - he got his feet wet and his court learned a lesson. Unfortunately the tale got twisted, so many of us here in the UK grew up being told he was stupidly arrogant and believed the sea would obey him (I remember a sketch by the Irish comedian Dave Allen illustrating it). And that's all in there, in the song; but written poetically, with the expectation that Genesis' audience would know at least some version of the story (we all did in Britain in the 70s, or at least all the middle class kids). Nad's great. He occasionally struggles with some of the very high notes, but I reckon Peter would too now, and Nad does a brilliant job stepping in some very large shoes.

Thanksf for finding a version I'd not seen before. Still got the vinyl of Moontan which was my introduction to Golden Earing. There was a British band called the Tornados which was also formed in 1961. Wanting to break into English language audiences would have meant the name change. Great band live for sure.

I was lucky enough to see Kansas a few times back when they were on top of the world in the 70s. At that time Steve Walsh was one of the best rock and roll vocalists ever. Robby Steinhardt is my favorite backing vocalist of all time, and a good lead vocalist. I am not sure if he created his own vocal lines but they would go high harmony when you think it would go low and vice versa. Kansas was a progressive rock and roll machine through the 70s, and I am so glad that I got to experience it first hand.

Best screamers in hard rock and metal are women.

The story behind this version (as I recall) went something like this… The producers of “Midnight Special” had requested that the band play a shorter version of the song, to fit in the allotted time slot for broadcast. The band said “Ok” and then couldn’t decide what part(s) to eliminate to make it shorter. So, they just decided to play the song as fast as they could, and hoped to finish before they got cut off. If you listen to the studio version, there is a much more relaxed playing of this hectic song vs what they had to, and did, for the show.

Bit more than one hit wonders. Sylvia, House of the King other good numbers from the time. More of an album band though. Saw them live in 1972. Spoilt me forever for live music they were that good. FOCUS 3 is a good album to investigate if you hhave time!. Moving Waves has the track Tommy. If you want something more songfull try the earlier album In and Out of Focus. There quite a story about this performance.

Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock front women... or front men! MIKU Kobato (Me-Ku), "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals and lyricist. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. She couldn’t play when she formed the band and was tutored by Kanami (which is why in Thrill MV she doesn't play much). KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more! AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

So, as with many Gabriel-era Genesis lyrics, the title is a pun. In Scotland a "firth" is an estuary, and there's a famous one at the mouth of the river Forth: the Firth of Forth. A firth fits with the lyrics, so Genesis just went one bigger! I'm in sync with your preferences here, though I push a _little_ later. Just about the only Genesis I return to is the Hackett era; I do like "Trespass" and "And Then There Were Three", but whenever I go to listen to them I end up choosing one of the ones in between instead, usually one with Gabriel. "Selling England by the Pound" is my favourite, and _Firth_ _of_ _Fifth_ is my top Genesis song and very high in my overall song rankings, up there with the likes of _Child_ _in_ _Time_ and _La_ _Villa_ _Strangiato._ I've seen Steve live many times (always a treat), and caught the "Foxtrot at 50" tour so I've seen this live but not with an orchestra. Emppu Vuorinen of Nightwish reminds me of Steve in some ways, not in the sounds they make or even personality, but both are virtuosos who put the music first, happy not to show off in flashy ways unless that's what the song calls for. I also got to see Peter Gabriel last year. He told us he was actually a hologram and the real Peter was off on some tropical beach, but unlike most artists he used the hologram to add 20 years and 20 pounds instead of taking them off! 😂
