Our Panama Junta de Embarre - Reviving the Mud Home Tradition

In 2019, I spent weeks inviting our neighbors in the Panama countryside to our junta de embarre, a mud-home building celebration, where the owners provide the materials, liquor, meals, snacks, and live music, and the attendees help you build part of your mud home (casa de quincha). This is a dead tradition, only seen in local festivals but no longer in actual livable homes. This is the footage ...

      @fpazfranciscapaz8475 😂 hay que usar el corazon de la madera porque si no, van a seguir regresando! Si ya tiene la madera corecta instalada, como de cedro amargo y tambien cañaza amarga (la verde), no tiene que hacer nada si serán embarrados. No aplique nada a la mayoria de la madera en la casa porque som de puro corazon y de madera como corotu y cedro. PERO, para las orquetas, puse BoraCore para otra clase de bicho y en el librero, donde hay unas partes de carne en el cedro, aplique algo que se llama Tung Oil con Citrus Solvent. La marca Milk Paint vende Half and Half, y es eso. Si veo comejenes, aplico esa!

    Thanks for sharing this great project! I was wondering how the foundation works. I saw some parts appear to have a concrete foundation, but in most places there looks to be direct contact between the quincha and ground. Specifcally in this video the columns have been set into the ground a few feet which I have seen done in traditional structures in different climates but was unable to find details. Are any additional precautions taken to prevent decay and pests, besides the mentioned use of resilient hardwoods? For example charring, using oils or wax, special drainage/soil type etc? Is there maintenance involved? Thanks!

    • @turiyapanama
      @turiyapanama 14 днів тому

      @latimerias great question! I only used concrete blocks on two sides of the house as a retaining wall. The foundation is all directly connected to the ground. We have had moisture problems in the parts of the house where the roadbase layer is WAY too thin (3-6inches). Most of the house is 1ft-3ft of roadbase under the earthen floor and no issues there. The issue is that the house was built on a slight hill and the foundation ended up thin on one side (the side where rain happens to hit!) I put in a drainage system on that side and gutters. I also raised 2 columns on that side of the house onto a concrete post after a few months of being concerned about it. Mushrooms started growing out of the post so that was a clear sign 😂 however, all other posts are directly in the ground. A wrap around porch is a big part of what protects them. However, you can 100% do wax/charring on the base. Ive seen those done, just not in this country!

      @latimerias 14 днів тому

      @@turiyapanama I really appreciate the response! Very cool to see a tropical build with an earthen floor opposed to a raised floor. Though I suppose the thick road base is essentially raising the floor for the same purposes. I hope you continue to make these great videos!

    • @turiyapanama
      @turiyapanama 26 днів тому

      @alonsoabaroa7435 there are self builders in europe doing this on outside walls! I recently discovered Gernot Minke's books and he has a ton of pictures of successful strawbale builds throughout europe over the past century that are still standing today!

  • @alonsoabaroa7435
    @alonsoabaroa7435 26 днів тому

    Lovely. How long does it take polishing one square meter of tadelack wall? Some self builders with straw didn't dare to do it on a straw wall because they heard it cracks in time and if humidity goes in a straw outside wall your house is ruined. But in your climate you don't need thick straw walls. Cob is enough and you redo it easily.

    • @turiyapanama
      @turiyapanama 26 днів тому

      @alonsoabaroa7435 a sq meter could take around 10-15 minutes! The only way I know how to do it on a straw wall is to do a thick cob plaster on the cob first, then lime plaster. On exterior walls, I've done both tadelakt and just gritty lime plaster. The only place where therr has been issues is where there has been continual rain splatter from a gutter. The plaster can't take consistent heavy wetting, but no issues above ground for the walls that get plenty of rain. A roof overhang/porch is highly recommended. For my totally exposed walls on my lime-plastered strawbale shed, use a gritty finish. This reduces runoff and slows rain down, preventing wearing. It is holding up well!

    Excelente trabajo.... ¿Sabes si funcionaría poner este tipo de piso (suelo) sobre cemento? Tengo una casa antigua casa de adobes y el suelo es de cemnto el cual está algo dañado con grietas y quebrajado y me gistaría ponerle barro encima. ¿Resultaría? ¿Sabes si tendría buena adherencia? Saludos.

    So beautiful to watch the community and elders come together. Absolutely heartwarming. I’m curious what the howling was about around 8 minutes in. It was rather unique.

      @@CorEbuzzBee the howling is a special "grita" done by indigenous people in this countryside region of Panama! It may have been used to locate others because the sound carries very well over the small hills here!

    After 19 years in the US, I’m finally moving back to my home country (Brazil) with my 12 yr old daughter. I’ve been spiritually ready for the quiet/ peaceful life but finally got the courage to take the risk. I found you on TikTok and now following you on here as well and I’ve been learning a lot. Thank you for using your channel to inspire people like me. 🙏
