Let's Visit Blackpool Tower! A General Aviation Day Trip
In this training flight, we head west from Leeds Bradford Airport, taking in the sights over Blackpool and the Southern Lake District.
We were very lucky with the weather, enjoying quite a bit of sun peeking through over both Blackpool and Lake Windermere. However, we did encounter a difficult cloud base at times, with gusting winds making the landing at Leeds Bradford Airport more challenging than usual.
Overall, it was a great flight that provided amazing views while I learned how to fly the DA40 Diamond Star.

Lynne, talks about Yorkshire Children’s Centre, and the amazing work they do, while experiencing her first ever flight in a small plane (she gets a few surprises along the way!). We take off and land at Sherburn Aero Club, and fly in a PA-28 Piper Cadet. Routing via Harrogate, York, Humber Bridge and Selby. ⚠️ PLEASE NOTE: We're aware the audio in parts of this video isn't ideal. Improvements h...
Mum doesn’t know I’m a private pilot, so we went flying!

I take my mum on a flight without her knowing that I am a qualified private pilot. She thought we'd hired another pilot for the trip. We take off and land at Leeds Bradford airport, and during the flight, we fly around Elvington and York, taking in the stunning views from above. Her reaction as she realises what's happening is a moment we will both never forget!
Hi Mate, Dad & I are delighting in your content & channel. My Father being a pilot himself, in the 70's adores your particular type of aircraft, could you please share any information for us? B. & G. Graf
Hey Ben, it’s a DA40, Diamond Star with an Austro Diesel engine and a Garmin 1000. Hope that helps!
So sweet. Almost cried!
@@marciaturley2850 aw thanks!
Great vid Dan 😊
Thanks buddy!
As soon as you said "He's not coming" I bellowed out a jolly laugh like Seth Rogan, the look on your mothers face is priceless.
Priceless, how proud your mother must be!
Aww, thanks for the comment 😅
This looks very very... very familiar to me lol!! Almost as if I had done something just like this a couple years earlier. Congrats on the achievment! Welcome to the Skies.
No way! Thanks for commenting buddy, love your videos. Safe flying 🛫
Watch me give mom a heart attack 💀
Nah, she was fine… 😂
lovely, she must be so proud of him! She trusts him completely.
Perhaps not anymore 😅
Don't think I could do this to my mum she would freak :D
LOL Cheeky boy
The Mom seems so calm, I'd probably be freaking out, lol.
She’s very chill!
Ngl... if I was the passenger.......I would be hysterical... 😂
Yes, she handled it like a trooper!
I swear I thought your passengers legs belonged to a chick at first haha. Your buddie has very little body hair for a bearded fella. You ever get tempted to give them a little stroke when he's wearing those jeans? I'd threaten to crash if he didn't let me, you've got to sieze the moment and take control of the situation. He'll like it if you assert dominance trust me, he's not wearing those jeans for no reason. Take the hint, you won't regret it trust me, this could be the start of something beautiful, don't deny yourself that. Don't tell my wife i said any of that either because she throws things at me when i get all homoerotic. It's not a gay thing for me though, it's all about power, which is arguably a lot worse. I always get like this when I'm thinking about aircraft, i think a lot of guys do, it's perfectly normal and healthy. It's better I vent and let off some of that steam now before I fly so i don't get distracted when I'm up there. I usually have a few whiskys to settle my nerves a bit too. I love being a pilot though, i don't let my crippling narcolepsy hold me back from doing anythi
Cool
Yeyyy
Love how mum has complete confidence in her sons surprise take off and flying!
Thanks for the comment Charlies. Yes, she was very calm (on the outside)!
she is so very proud. nice to see
Aww that was adorable
Thanks Retro, glad you enjoyed it!
I saw Concorde land and take off there.
That’s amazing!
As a mom, this brings proud tears to my eyes! Love this!!
Aw, thanks for the comment Kathy! 😅
“u cheeky boy” priceless
It's become a bit of a catchphrase at my side 🙄
Her smile was the best thing in the video. Well done. I was waiting for you to start freaking out as you gained speed and acted like the plane was out of control. 😂
Thanks! I didn’t want to take the prank any further for a few reasons, the biggest being I didn’t want to get distracted while taking off. I was also trying not to accidentally kill mum from the shock, but given how calm she was, that obviously was never going to be an issue 😅
@@onairclub I fully understand. Cherish this experience with your mum (mom in the U.S.). You can see and feel her pride through her smile. Be Well and Fly Safe.
@@bwoodworth100 thanks, really appreciate the comment. It was great to be able to reveal everything to her after all the training and exams.
ive been wanting to get my license and when she said "its a shame your grandad isnt here to see this" and i thought about how ive wanted to take my grandma up someday when i get my PPL. well. she got re-diagnosed with cancer again (like 7th or 8th time at this point, ive lost track) and we dont really know how long she has left. when i do get my PPL though, idk if ill be able to fly without thinking about her.
Sorry to hear about your Grandma. Honestly, *u** cancer. Fingers crossed you get your PPL!
@@onairclub thanks man, yeah f cancer
Holy shit I thought you were Matt Damon from the thumbnail
I very much consider that a compliment.
@@onairclub it definitely is one, was definitely confused, but you got a new sub!
Love her demeanor. All I could think the whole time was "Nothing phases an English woman." Keep calm and carry on. lmao she's a gem.
Yes, she was extraordinarily calm and collected… at least outwardly.
Queria muito fazer um pouso desses no meu jogo mais oque eu ir pra pista eu vou pra grama😢😢😢
Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing 😅
Hope it wasn’t too windy!
This was such a great prank! I love it! She took it better than I expected. I thought she would start to panic yell and scream!!, lol. Your mother is quite the trooper. 👍
She is that! Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
did she call you a cheeky dick LOL
Quite perfect
Thanks!
Smooth 😎
NOBODY IN THIS WORLD CAN SURPRISE ME WITH A HELICOPTER 🚁 RIDE😜😝🤪🤣.. ..🦜🧸💐🇳🇱
I feel like you’re hinting for a birthday present 🎁
my lord...I would be peeing in my pants in the midst of this!!!!! What a cute joke for his mom...........nice surprise. I love it. Would love to do that to someone. Too old too fly a plane actually. You look just like your mom by the way!!!!!
Aww, lovely comment. Thanks so much 🙂
I'm not sure how I ended up on this video, but I really enjoyed it. Congrats on this achievement. Your dad would be proud, and we can all see your mum was.
Aww, thanks Marcus. Love your videos.
That is a very nice bird. Good passenger.
Alas she was sold fairly shortly after that flight. She was great to fly in.
Part of the flight brief is getting the seat adjusted, air vents, How to work the seat belts, how to work the doors, seat belts, how to get out, and so on.
I didn't show the pre-flight, but Mark is real and acted like PIC initially (to mum), although I did my own checks per any flight. She was shown how to vacate safely in the even of an emergency. The seat situation wasn't ideal, I've never had such a small passenger, so I've never had to adjust the right seats hight before, nor is it on the checklist. Lesson learned!
What a lad.
Ha! Thanks
Have you any ambitions to go on to be a commercial pilot?
Not presently, although I’d love to get an IFR & multi engine rating next!
@@onairclub Fantastic, all the very best of luck to you 👏
Amazing video, great work on not making Lynne sick!
It was a lovely day to fly!
Well done 😂 nice surprise..i love it
Ha! Thanks for the feedback, to be honest I'm still surprised this one worked out so well. The odds of it coming together (nice day / Mark helping / Mum falling for it etc) all seemed fairly out there.
Beautiful views!
Thanks Adam!
Hi what type plane you flying?
She’s a Piper Warrior, but converted to use a Austro Diesel engine. She was lovely to fly but was sold in April. Latest video I’m in a Piper Archer, but I’ll soon be flying in a DA-40.
Great work Dan. I could work out the audio, so good job! 😊
Thanks! Yeah. Lynne’s mic essentially failed. We recovered what we could but it’s left some… interesting artefacts. Lessens learned. New hardware purchased. We’ll do better next time.
Americans love when British people call each other "cheeky"! Such a sweet mother and son.
Aww, thanks for the feedback. Really appreciate it 🙂
wish i still had my mom around to take up in the air. beautiful video and grats!!
Aww thanks. Yes, I’m very lucky this all came together so well 🙂
I love your Mum's reaction of you revealing that you're flying without the pilot you were waiting on
Thanks! It took a fair bit of planning to pull off 👍
I really enjoyed every minute of this. I wish I could do something like this someday.
Really appreciate the feedback Neil. Why not give flying a go?
the best
Thanks, appreciate the feedback!
having flone in alot of planes alike its a great feeling, happy for you that you where able to share it with your Mother!
It’s like nothing else 🙂 Thanks for the comment!
My mom refuses to go up with me LOL... She's terrified of small planes.
Just don’t tell her, worked for me!
